In 2018-19, ex-paratrooper Jean-Jaques Savin floated across the Atlantic in custom "barrel".

He was 72 when he started the trip, it took four months. Fortunately, he had thought to bring his mandolin.
Now, 75 years-old, he was trying to row across the l'Atlantique in a custom "canoe".

It is not clear what happened--earlier he had reported some strong winds and a bit of trouble with his solar power system--but he activated a set of emergency beacons. The Portuguese coast guard found him in his canoe. The cause of his death is currently unknown.
Fare thee well on thy adventures to distant shores, my hero.
