Beware - Farmer/MiniChamp Combo Content

With the last three weeks to think about it, while at home recovering from back pain issues, I think I've decided to try something new this year. It’ll be tough to put down the SwissChamp, but I guess I’ve got nothing to lose. If I get to missing the SwissChamp badly enough, I’ll can pick it back up. No harm, no foul.

I strongly considered the Farmer X. But after a couple weeks of playing with it, I’m just not quite sold. I think the FX may be just a touch bulkier than I want to go with on a 93mm alox. I’m also having trouble adjusting to the position of the nail nick in the scissors.

Instead, I think I’ll cut back a layer and go with the tried and true Farmer. I’d once carried a Farmer for years on end, so the model certainly isn’t a stranger to me. And since I’m officially celebrating this week, making a full recovery from my back woes, I’m pulling a good one out from the knife drawer. A nice minty red “old cross”.



It looks gorgeous, and just feels really, really good in the hand. I think three layers is my sweet spot on the 93mm platform. It’ll be a pleasure to give this knife some pocket time, and watch the red covers start to age. That classic red Alox patina looks more and more wonderful as time goes on.

But the Farmer is a simple thing, not complicated like my beloved SwissChamp. So I’m going to try doubling up on my SAKs this year, and combo a MiniChamp with the Farmer. With a bit of luck, the odd selection of tools from the MiniChamp will keep things interesting for me, trying to find entertaining uses for the cuticle pusher and picker tool.



Last time I EDC’d a Farmer, I paired it with a 74mm Executive. The Exec was awesome, having great scissors and that amazing nail file. But I’m just not feeling the cellidor this year. Fortunately for me, I am totally loving the alox, so the MiniChamp should be an awesome fit. I’m definitely looking forward to carrying a SAK with a blade that isn’t a spear point. That skinny wharncliffe is going to come in handy for tons of jobs, I can feel it.



To dress up the Farmer, I added a loop of OD green paracord, and a Photon microlight. The red/green is all reverse matchy matchy with my recently crafted OD canvas micarta worry stone, so all bases are covered aesthetically. Yeah, the Miniachamp is silver alox, but the scales do match the plethora of miscellaneous blades and tools here, so I’m feeling pretty good about it.

So what do you think about the Farmer/MiniChamp combo for EDC? Too much? Not enough? Just right?

For my frequent trips into the wilderness, I think the MiniChamp may get left at home. My survival mini-kit has a new nail care SwissCard tucked inside, which should provide an ample enough set of tools to get me by in the Adirondack Mountains. Another nice Victorinox product to pair with the Farmer.

They're beautiful knives and you've captured them in amazing pictures.  :salute:  I hope your recovery is going well!

I think you've made a great choice, because life is just too short to keep the pretty ones in the drawer, IMO.  They make a very capable pair, and I agree with you about that great "square" feel in the hand that the Farmer has.. Like you, I carried a farmer for many years, but I've moved toward fewer layers in the past few years rather than more as you have.  I've always paired mine with a Rambler and don't own any 58mm ALOX, as I can't stand the thought of not having T&T on my keychain.


I hope you don't mind me sharing a couple of my favorites as well.  The hard anodized one on the right has been carried and used more than any other knife I own.

Great looking SAKs and a nice combo!

I've carried a Mini Champ and 91mm (usually a Swiss Champ) for quite a while now. I like the combination of small tools for small things and big tools for big things.

By the way, I've found that the MC's cuticle pusher makes a decent slotted screwdriver and the picker tool is good for peeling oranges and opening plastic clamshell packaging.

I think it’s going to be a solid combo.  The Farmer is always a strong choice, and that’s a beautiful old red cross example you have there.

The Minichamp may be a bit much, in the sense that a Rambler (as an aside, it’s a crying shame that an alox Rambler isn’t offered as part of Vic’s regular line) or even a Classic might cover most of the functionality of the Minichamp.  I probably wouldn’t get much use out of some of those tools, but YMMV.

Lovely Farmers!!! I see that your OC has those wonderful brass liners. Mine isn't quite that precious, which made it easier to decide to carry. I was able to convince myself that my OC was of only minor value from a collector's standpoint, being of later vintage, making it somehow fine to put into use.

I actually considered carrying my worn OC Vic Pioneer (brass liners) or Wenger SI, instead of a Farmer, since my pack usually has a large folding saw inside. But the grip felt so much more secure on the Farmer (I have crazy long fingers), that I decided that go with it for largely entirely ergonomic reasons.

Being honest with myself, I went with the MiniChamp for it's wonderful gadgety quality. Coming off years of SwissChamp carry, I know I'm going to miss that daily challenge, figuring out all the uses for those crazy shaped tools. It's an addictive mental exercise, that I'm hoping will prove true for the MiniChamp as well.

A clamshell opener will make a welcome addition. That could almost be considered an urban survival tool in today's modern age of plastic everything.  :rant:

The MiniChamp is a bit of fascination right now, but could indeed prove to be too much. One of my first thoughts was my Warthog Rambler from DLT trading, but I'm really wanting alox right now. Why isn't there an alox Rambler? I guess if I truly start to feel the need, I could attempt a mod of sorts, removing a few tools from the MiniChamp. It looks like it's been done before a few times. I also have a black alox "almost a Rambler" mod that I purchased. No nail file, which is a bummer, but it has a Spyderco blade, scissors and combo tool.

When an old knife is in the condition it was in when it left the factory, I would at the very least be hesitant to carry it. However, I have no issues with occasionally and carefully carrying an old knife that comes to me with some wear. Perhaps I need to look around for a pre-owned OC at a reasonable price and give it some pocket time.

I guess that my perspective is the same, but slightly skewed by time. My knife collection is largely comprised of scout pattern slipjoints, many of which date back to the 1920’s through the early 1950’s. Lots of Camillus, Remington, Ulster, etc. In comparison, this old cross is relatively new, probably dating back only….. 35 years? It never occurred to me that it would be of any historical significance.

Oh yeah. This Farmer/MiniChamp combo is totally working for me. Had a busy day, full of SAK uses.

I got to break down cardboard boxes, the reamer workin especially well to zip through packing tape.



The cap lifter worked a treat for pulling large staples from cardboard.



The main blade was used to extricate a new charge cable from it’s sticky tape prison.



I even got to try out the orange peeler.



The wharncliffe blade’s tip worked perfectly for unstitching buttons from old shirts, to add to a sewing kit.



Oh, one more. That combo tool rocks for tiny screws. The magnetic tip is soooooooo handy!!!



I feel like there’s no small task that cannot be performed with this combo.

Lovely post as always from you chap, feel I may have to dig my Farmer out for the next little bits carry. Like you I love the Pioneer but find the saw layer to make it just that much better in hand, even if I don't use the saw on the daily(and I've got what's been described as "carney hands" :D  )

Now I'm wondering about a small Alox - I told Victorinox that you should be a brand ambassador after what you did for Swisschamp sales, and here we are >:D :rofl:

Great "use" pics Buzzbait!  The 58mm phillips combo tool is one of my most used ones.  You'll be amazed at the range of screws that it seems to fit perfectly.

Since I lost my Minichamp I want to buy another, but Alox this time. For the time being I settle with an Executive which is great. The nailfile tip and the flat driver fit most screws I regurarly encounter. But your post made me want that little jewel badly again.
I had a shirt with the exact same red-white-green tartan pattern. I was wearing it until it was worn and my wife threw it away with me almost crying on the floor.

I really came to appreciate the executive during the Chuck Yeager Memorial Challenge back in December.  Still, I believe that I like my MiniChamps a bit more. I've seen a few Alox MC's, on the eBay for a bit less than retail.

I just finished up a week of vacation, and the Farmer/MiniChamp combo proved to be quite good. The MiniChamp saw lots of use at the cabin in the mountains. Lots of food packaging to open. One doorknob to screw back together, as it was about to fall apart. Mountain knife wreaked havoc upon my nails, so the nail file was much appreciated.

The Farmer proved to be an absolute lifesaver when I went camping on my own. I need to cut a dowel in order to hang my food bag, ala the PCT method, so the saw got some use. Then in the middle of the night, during a freak 55MPH wind storm, trees falling all around me, I was suddenly cutting cord with the main blade, to secure an extra ridge line mounted tarp over my tent.

I even found an old leather dangler pouch I made years ago. Gave it a quick application of SnowSeal while I was waterproofing my boots. Fits the Farmer perfectly.

Great thread....and a great looking Farmer!  On the small, I vacillate between an Alox MC and a Rambler.  I tend not to put anything on my keys except my 1R 2 EOS.  The MC/Rambler hang in the watch pocket.  Anyway that OC Farmer....oh my!!

If they made the Rambler in alox, I probably would have gone with a Rambler. But the MiniChamp is quickly endearing itself to me. I’m really digging the extensive tool selection. Lots of room for creativity.

Still deciding whether the Farmer or the MiniChamp is going to ride in my watch pocket. For now, the MiniChamp rides in my watch pocket, and the Farmer dangles into my front pocket via the leather pouch. But I could probably just put the Farmer in my watch pocket, and drop the MiniChamp into my front pocket. Decisions, decisions, decisions……….

That is a very nice combo with lots of features.  Lumberjack + MiniChamp gets ya most of the way there at a lighter pocket load too.
