Signal or Wave for Mods?
on: April 20, 2022, 07:25:52 PM
I am just getting into Multitools and recently got a Skeletool as my EDC. I have made a few mods and want to get a second tool to keep on my motorcycle.

I am leaning toward a Signal but like the Wave too. Since I am not worried about the weight which one is best if I plan to do mods?

There are a number of tools on the Wave that I will not use and my first thought was to swap them with things I would use. The Signal has less of what I would not use, but I would like to swap some stuff out.

Appreciate any input, and thanks for letting me in.

If the extra cost is not an issue I would get the Wave with a bit extender and a bit set that can be used on your motorcycle. Extender for the hard to reach nuts and most probably you will need Torx/Allen bits I assume. What mods you plan on doing? Best bet is to think of the things that can go wrong and if the tools you plan on carrying can be useful. Sometimes only dedicated tools will do the job.

If you already carry a motorcycle specific tool set and looking for a MT for general use I would go with the Signal. Just my opinion  :)

Thanks for the input. I do carry a bike specific tool kit for them, but was thinking about the things I do not have that come in handy in a multitool for fixing things like wiring, cable tie cutting, etc....

With the Wave I never see using the scissors, and other smaller tools really. However, if I could replace those with something like a better awl or other specific tool then that would be useful.

Have you considered the Crunch? Locking pliers can be useful as a 3rd hand on the road when doing minor repairs.

:iagree: on the Crunch but, having both Signal and Wave, I'd call dibs on the Wave. Cheaper, smaller chassis/more compact, as easy to modify, but can have more tools. I've used the scissors for cutting patches to size, duct tape and zip ties for impromptu repairs, and for grooming tasks myself; the file for deburring the handlebar's ends after a crash for comfort, all while on bike rides (although the bicycle type and not motor bike!!!). Just an idea and my 2 cents; either one will be a great companion.

Motorcycle and Bicycle. I mountain bike a lot and wanted something handy to have along on those rides as well.

I really appreciate the input on this topic.

The Wave...can have more tools.
My thoughts exactly. The Signal is a great tool, but the hammer end limits the amount of space for other tools unless you significantly modify the chassis.

When I used to ride motorcycles I carried a Surge with the bit extender, a full bit set, saw and file attachments. All tools stuffed under the saddle. I also have zip ties, duct tape, first aid kit etc stuffed in there.

On bicycle rides I carry a Squirt PS4 to this day. Easily fits in the bag under the saddle. Have been very useful, mostly helping others who had mechanicals.
