Day 30

In keeping with several of the other day 30 posts, here are most of the knives I used during this challenge:

Case 65 pattern Folding Hunter (1/2 serrated) - I carried this one a few times, but the 1/2 serrated blade just wasn’t ideal for my use.

A.G. Russell Folding Hunter - In spite of its large size and weight, I found this knife to be comfortable in hand, easy to carry, and convenient to use with its OHO capability.  It became one of my favorites of the challenge.

Opinel No. 10 - I don’t feel I did this knife justice during this challenge, probably because I had so many other options.  Perhaps an Opinel challenge in the future…

Schrade 7OT - It saw some use as a desk knife, but I really didn’t carry it.  It’s quite heavy compared to some of my other folding hunters.

Cold Steel Ultimate Hunter - Another that I used but didn’t really carry.  The beefy textured handle actually makes this one difficult to get into and out of a pocket.

Case 65 pattern Folding Hunter (CV) - I was leery of a carbon steel knife, as almost all my knives are stainless and my pockets are often a bit damp with sweat.  After forcing a patina and giving it a good sharpening, though, it became one of my favorites.  Perhaps the best cutter of the bunch now, and no rust issues so far.

One key takeaway for me, after this challenge and last month’s Buck 110 challenge, is that while an approximately 4” blade is large for a pocketknife by most standards (and above the legal limit in some jurisdictions), it’s actually a darn handy size for an EDC.

Day 30
It's Memorial Day here in the States where we remember our fallen heroes.  There are flags everywhere as this is considered a patriotic holiday, so I decided to include one in today's picture.  I've used the Ka-Bar 3189 for the entire month and I really enjoyed it.  It may not be quite as refined as a Buck 110, but it beat the Buck in ease of use since it is thinner, lighter, has a pocket clip, and an ambidextrous thumb stud.  I know there are variations of the Buck 110 that have all of those attributes as well, but the Ka-Bar was right around $20.00 U.S. including delivery, and no model of the Buck 110 comes close to that value.  If I didn't have so many other knives I've been wanting to carry I'd just continue to carry the Ka-Bar in my back pocket next to my wallet.  As Nate said, a 4" blade in a folding hunter is a handy size for EDC.  That is, of course assuming it is legal to carry where you are.  If there were any other limitations to this size folding hunter I haven't found them.

Folding Hunter Challenge,,, Day 30,,,, 1995 Case Blackhorn

As they say,,, all good things must end. Today marks the end of our "Folding Hunter Challenge", and the Memorial Day weekend.

The Case Blackhorn proved itself a worthy tool, that performed every task I put it through. Quite a bit bulker than my preference, but I got used to it. Being able to remove a scale proved useful for clean up a couple of times.

Congrats to all who completed the challenge!!!

Included is a bonus pic of a good one I caught while camping.
