Day 1.

I can't wait any longer, and decided to start a bit early.

I chose a Ruby version with Asea Brown Boveri licensing--a company Vic has made several ad knives for over the course of 50 years or more--heck, knives exist for both ASEA and Brown Boveri; before the two merged. I visited one of their facilities as a part of my mechatronics class in 2017, and one of our industrial robots in the classroom had been made by ABB.

I carried it alongside a pair of Knipex 140mm Combination Pliers. Small, fairly thin, and light, but they get some serious work done. They are stronger than the pliers on heavy-duty multitools, and much cheaper to replace if broken or lost. I had previously tried the 160mm models, but they were almost twice as heavy and much bulkier. I often have the 125mm Cobra alongside them, but decided to leave them behind today. I used them for three things--cutting trimmer line, moving a wire screen to a trash barrel (which heat and corrosion had caused it to start crumbling, and a splinter had gotten in my hand), and moving a dead rosebush branch so I wouldn't get a thorn in my hand.

I opened up some Kershaw knives I'd sent to them to have warranty work done a few weeks back. These now have proper edges, instead of messes from both myself and previous owners (including one said to have been "professionally sharpened" by the seller, but dulled within a week from light EDC use due to an edge that was too thin). The Scallion had its blade replaced as it was very worn.

That scaler is a Multitool in itself!  :D

Spot on Barry, there's plenty of posts here to prove how versatile the much derided Scaler is. Most importantly it is an ideal tea bag retrieval tool for a nice cuppa  :like:

But that's enough about these upstart multiple layer tools. It's the Midsummer Spartan Challenge. For many this is where it all began and it's time to prove just how much you can achieve without all these show-off layers if you go back to basics.

So, Day 01, and let's not worry about scissors to open a pack of granola with the small blade on my Walnut Spartan. No worries at all. I've also got a Rambler today so I've T&T covered.

Hoping to see some cat photos as the challenge progresses.

Some great work by awl! :tu:

Day 1

I'm starting off with a Spartan family photo I took not too long ago. The plain ruby will be in the bulk of my photos, as it's the only one that's a regular carrier.

DAY 1  When the going gets tough, the tough cheat like crazy.

This challenge is like going on a SAK diet, and cutting out all those wonderful middle layers is going to hurt.  Bad.  So I put a special Spartan Plus together for this challenge.  Sapphire translucent plus scales up the tool count by adding a pen and a pin.  Toothpick was discarded in favor of a Firefly rod.  Micro screwdriver and tinder are riding in the corkscrew.  On the keyring I have a GITD disc and a NiteIze light.

I feel like Gunnery Sergeant Hartman should be yelling at me: "If you ladies leave my island, if you survive this challenge, you will be a real SAK Spartan."

Great turnout for the Challenge!  For my Day 1, I put Old Blue to use slicing bread for lunch.  After packing a Deluxe Tinker and Explorer last month, this is nice!  My backup is the Alox Minichamp on my keychain.  The goal for me is to not use it.

Today I'm carrying my mid-70s Spartan/Standard that I picked up a couple of weeks ago from my friendly neighborhood auction website.

[ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]

We've got the fluted corkscrew, no sewing eye in the awl, no scale tools, and a blank reverse tang stamp.

I'll be rotating through three SAKs for this challenge - the Spartan pictured above, a modern Spartan purchased brand new two weeks ago, and a modern Tourist that is roughly one year old.

I haven't used it for anything yet though. It's only 7:15 am here in the Pacific time zone!

I confess, a large part of ordering new scales for mine was to cram as much as possible into it

Day 2:

Changing the blade of my toolbox's utility knife was LONG overdue. I'd made an even bigger mess out of it when I had to undo a bodge job from a botched toilet seat repair last week, as I had to cut through several thick plastic bits in order to get the old hinges off (which had a metal bolt crammed in instead of the correct plastic ones), and I guess cutting into the ceramic made things worse.

I had to separate two that had come out of my blade holder that were stuck together by the oil, grease, cosmolene or whatever they were coated in, so I used the straight pin (which isn't an official Vic one--a common dressmaker's pin you can get a big box of for a couple of dollars).

DAY 01

On Day 00 I added the straight pen, Paracord, and mini driver to start my challenge.

First thing I had a clogged spray bottle and that straight pen came to the rescue and cleared out the blockage. Awl has already cleaned my nails. And that small blade opened a package for me.

So far so good. I will admit this Spartan melts away in the pocket compared to last months Huntsman and the favorite four layer challenge.

For sure. I've been carrying a Deluxe Tinker in my pocket for last few days, which is pretty heavy for a four layer. Compared to that, the Spartan feels like nothing at all.

All these lovely uses for the Spartans, for day one,   and for some reason all my Spartan can do is only watch.

Day 8

We bought a new blanket for the cat, which the Spartan helped unpackage. Small blade did the job well enough, though scissors would've been a bit easier. I was hoping to get a pic of her on it, but she's being a cat so you get the Spartan instead. We have a few similar fleece blankets downstairs that she likes to sit on, so we got one for upstairs in hopes of encouraging her to sit where we want.
