An old adage....
on: September 23, 2022, 02:39:34 PM
There's an old adage in the shipping industry- cargo is only worth as much as the straps you use to secure it.

I was tying down a barbecue this morning (not mine) using a rope that had been left out, and I'd assumed intended for this purpose.  It was a brand new (in package) rope from the dollar store, and I swear, the image below is the same smurfing rope.

Needless to say, I did my best but I won't be surprised if we have to buy them a new barbecue next week....

OMG

I tried to use dollar store rope once.  Never could get it tight.  Kept stretching till it broke.  I keep a couple sets of straps in the car now.

Yeah, I don't use dollar store rope for anything.

When I say this is the same rope, I mean actually the same rope- the exact same length of rope.  At some point it goes from the larger rope on the left to being the smaller rope on the right.

Not the kind of thing that instills a lot of confidence.

I wonder what the rated strength of that stuff is. If time weren't of the essence, I'd get some MILSPEC 750 paracord on its way to you...

The dollar store rope would worry me too.  I'd use it if I had to for one trip, but that disparity in diameter doesn't present well for the company's quality control.  I bet it snaps at the tighter wound portion.  I have a small backpack filled with ratchet straps.  Each stap is rolled up and stored in a separate bag in the backpack so I don't have a tangled mess when I reach for one.

gives a whole new meaning to “ Tensile strength” as in xmas tinsel!
judge others by how they treat those they are allowed to mistreat
