Day 29, just stretching, not much going on today. Amazing how little is going on at work between major holidays.

Day 29

Executive helped unboxing a new headlamp, I love this headlamp so much that this is probably my third one.
The retractable headband is the main selling feature of this light, making it really compact and easy to store.

Nice. I love headlamps in general. Not sure if I've tried that model, but Petzl makes good ones!  :tu:

Just when I thought all the Christmas goodness was about gone,  I found the last Claxton fruitcake.  Patch did a fine job of slicing me a few slices.

Day 29: Cutting open boxes.  As Nix can attest, there's not many knives better, ounce for ounce, than the Executive.  General Yeager understood the importance of getting the most for the least weight, as did Lindbergh.  I can say that mine is staying ony keychain!  Thanks for another great challenge Nix!!

Nice.  I haven’t tried the Zipka, but I do have the Petzl Bindi.  I’ve really become a fan of headlamps.

I used the sharp underside of the Executive’s orange peeler to cut some packing straps.  It did better than expected.

Day 29

Also no uses. Wife and I are on a glamping trip; mostly bumming around and reading. Enjoying discussing and gearing up for Poker Face in a couple days.

Like Barry, I find the Exec to be about as good as it gets for keychain multitools.

DAY 29

The scissors on the black executive snipped an overzealous candle wick. The 74 mm scissors are quite formidable and the more I use this wonderful knife the more it grows on me and I'm now really beginning to see how it could be the main EDC 98% of the time. It's going to be hard to not have this one in my daily EDC. These challenges are wreaking havoc with my SAK paradigms.  :ahhh

Me thinks Bella is sad the challenge is nearing the end  :(

It's 30 December, and I haven't turned in yet. Time for the final official post of the challenge...

Until last year, I was barely aware that the 74mm line ever existed. Now I am among those who lament its apparent demise. From the moment I got an Executive in hand, I could see that it was a brilliant SAK. It has awl the tools I regularly use on a 58mm model, but offers a more substantial feel without sacrificing compact carry. I'll definitely be seeking out a backup Executive, and more with logos for the collection.

A thanks to everyone who participated, and to Nix for hosting. Special thanks to the unsung hero of the challenge, BPRoberts, who sent me a couple of Executives so I could participate!

Day 30

My other Executive makes an appearance this time around.

Day 30, Final day, showing my “collection” of executives and a few directors. Really wish Victorinox would not just keep these models, but expand the line. I have included three mods that I have done as well in the photo. Hope some of you will also try modding the executive. Like to see what you come up with in the coming new year. Great way to end 2022. Enjoyed this challenge very much. All the best to all of you.

I like headlamps in general, especially when hiking in the dark.  But the form factor of the Zipka is really what I appreciate the most, making it one of the more versatile light I have owned.  Too bad Petzl is discontinuing them, they got pretty good rating on Amazon.

Day 30

Executive unboxing a new game to play with the Little guy.

Thank you Nix for yet another great challenge, and happy to have this opportunity to do this challenge with you.

Thinking about Yeager and the discontinuing of the 74mm line, it once again reminds me how important it is to cherish whom we care about and what we have while we can.   May this new year of 2023 bring much happiness and good health to you and your families.  See you in the next one!

The grandkids got a crawling tunnel for Christmas which was held closed by a piece of nylon webbing.  Used Patch to cut out the seam holding it together to use on another project.

Day 30. Used the small blade to open a packet of mince pies today but an air map is more in the spirit of this challenge. I think you mentioned at the start of the challenge Nix that this was smaller than the Classic main blade. Like everything else about the Executive it nevertheless does everything you reasonably ask if it.

I've had a great time in this Challenge and thank you Nix for arranging it

Day 30:

Congratulations to awl who completed this challenge. And a special thank you to everyone who chipped in with snippets of and quotations by the good General Yeager.  :salute:

Once again I find the Executive to be a fantastic little EDC. While I didn't do much on the great outdoors this past month, the Executive was perfect as an EDC for me. I'm in no rush to switch out to another knife tomorrow. (But participation in the Poker Face Challenge may require a new knife or tool..... :ahhh)

The nail file got used to help switch out some batteries on the thermostat. Sort of important at this time of year....

My final thoughts on the challenge:

Overall, I think the Executive is a great SAK at a size that I find to be somewhat awkward in certain ways.

The orange peeler was definitely the standout tool on the SAK for me. I got a lot of use out of it - opening packages, using the screwdriver tip, and even peeling an actual orange.  Meanwhile, I found the phillips capability of the nail file to be... just OK. Also, the nail file is also just OK. The blades and scissors are the usual Victorinox quality (which is to say they are awesome), but that mostly goes without saying.

Could I use the Executive as my EDC? Yes, I could. It covers a lot of bases for me, though I do wish it was better at phillips screws than it is. It comes close to being equivalent to my usual 2-layer 84mm/91mm plus Rambler EDC in one SAK. That, in and of itself, is very impressive.

That said, I think a larger SAK combined with a 58mm is still my preference for a few reasons. For one thing, as versatile as the Executive is, the combo is even more so with the ability to change up SAKs day by day with no difference in weight/carry profile. Another is the form factor - Personally, I prefer the 84mm/91mm form factor over and above any other size category. Also, I love the opener layer on the 84mm and 91mm SAKs.

The 74mm Executive is a little awkward in some ways. I did not find it to be any more capable than a 58mm SAK to any appreciable degree despite it being significantly bigger than a Classic SD or Rambler. Sure, the 74mm size disappears in the pocket. But so does an 84mm or 2-layer 91mm, at least to me. And the addition of the 58mm is basically "free" in the sense that I cannot tell a difference in weight (or anything) if I am carrying the 58mm or not. In other words, the Executive isn't "more pocketable" enough for me to make a permanent switch over my usual preference. At least, not in the same way that I find a 2-layer plus a 58mm SAK to be easier to carry over an Explorer or Deluxe Tinker, for example.

So, I like the Executive but not quite enough for it to become my new EDC. It's a great combination of tools though and it really makes me wish the Alumnus was still in production (or a Sportsman X or Cadet X) because that would be the closest tool set in the 84mm form factor.

As always, it's fun to do these challenges and really get to know SAKs that I'm not too familiar with. Not to mention seeing the uses everyone else gets out of them too. It's also a great way to get to know your own needs/wants better too because it forces you to really pay attention to what you're using a pocket knife for on a day to day basis.

I look forward to another challenge in a month or two (I don't like to do two in a row). In the meanwhile, I'll be going back to my beloved Recruit + Rambler, giving the Evolution 14 a real chance, and generally not being able to decide what my favorite SAKs are  :ahhh

It's all of them!
