You know, every time I mention the box in a PM or something to a member here I get something like, "What is the box all about?" or "I heard something about it but don't know much."  Either that, or they don't reply at all.
Started out as a small flat rate box.  Quickly grew to a series of bigger boxes.  Split in half.  Part went to Australia (where it has disappeared again).  The US half has been filling a medium flat rate box for quite a while now.  New recipients are going to have to start taking some bulky items out or something.  From the last time I got the box, I don't really recall items that I would think of as bulky.  Lots of things.  Not much actual filler material.
I recall one member who would take out two or three items that were Cheap and Cheerful category and giving them to some of the neighborhood kids.  Depends on the kids, I guess.  Some kids could enjoy a little multi or something.  Some kids couldn't be trusted with bubble gum.  Some parents might disagree with that as well.
Wives and moms have gotten items from time to time from the box.  All good I say.  But it hasn't made the box smaller.  Maybe it has kept it from bulging.  As long as everything still fits and ships in a medium box there probably isn't anything to worry about.  Maybe things will self-regulate?  We will see.  Best wishes.  G

If it's guaranteed to be delivered on a longhorn, I'll have another go.

Longhorn move slower so it might take a while.  :D

Finally had an opportunity to go through the box this evening.  There's a lot of cool stuff in here and everybody's generosity is apparent.  I've set aside an initial pick so that I can go through it tomorrow during the day.  Too many things catch my eye.  I even let the wife go through it and she picked out 3 things already.

The only stuff being delivered here are space debris.  According to the nattering gossips who fabricate the news, there is space junk falling on my county and the neighboring counties.  Part of the Space-X Dragon that did an oopsie.  Whatever a Space-X Dragon is.
Supposedly the pieces are covered with carbon fiber, so maybe I could tell the difference between space junk and non-space junk.  Like Modelo beer bottles.  I will look for stuff when I mow.  Could the next Sos box contain a piece of space junk?  Hmmm?
It is nice that Mrs. Aztec found something she likes, but a little sad that her husband got her hooked on this pernicious pastime.  Maybe the box will get trimmed down a little.  Best wishes.  G

A piece of space junk could be interesting. And Modelo bottles are fine by me...if they're unopened. :D

No space junk over here.  Just regular junk.

So I initially felt a bit bad because I thought I was pulling too many items out of the box.  But then after I added my items to the box and the box was having a hard time closing, I figured I better pull at least another item or two to get it to close.  I also re-wrapped everything a bit tighter so that the box wouldn't bulge out.

My wife chose the Pock-Its, the sewing kit and the Alissa multi-tool.  My son chose the denim micarta Rough Ryder.  I chose the Victorinox sharpener, the watch batteries, the Zippo flints, the NoBox multi-tool, the Dutch SAK, and the plastic mother of pearl SAK-A-Like.

I also pulled some of the SAK spare parts.

Even after pulling all that out, the box is leaving heavier than I received it.  Farmer X shipped it out at nearly 14lbs and it's now weighing 14.8lbs on our home scale.  The post office will be able to give me a more exact weight.

My goal is to try to go to the post office during my lunch hour and get it shipped out to Gary.

Looks like Papa Bear, Mama Bear, and Junior Bear got something.  That Rough Rider would be a first class carry knife.  Be careful with that Victorinox sharpener.  Those things will ruin an edge faster than anything I have seen.
I weedwacked and mowed myself into a stupor yestidday.  I found a terrapin but no carbon fiber wrapped space ship parts.  I figured out that for each big marketable sized parts of the failed folly, there must be countless small or possibly even microscopic fiddly bits.  Dang.  What if there was something edible, like macerated parts of a space man or maybe a space banana or some fragments of a chicken salad sandwich?  The scavenging raccoons would surely find it before anyone else.
I'm not the world's best package packer, so it will be a challenge to get everything back in the box and close the flaps.  Sounds like to me.  Might have to just reach in with my eyes closed and take out enough stuff so I can sit on the box and tape it back up.  Maybe it will get lost in the mail this time so I won't have to deal with it.  Or I could just slap Alan's mailing label on the box in the post office, throw the employees an Andy Jackson and not even open it.  Hmmm?
Better not do that.  Aztec may have put some candy in it like he did last time.  Best wishes.  G

Lots of compooter problems this morning.  I can hardly make a post.  That might lead to cheers in some quarters.  Anyway, I had to go to the post office this morning.  This charity organization that I have been making contributions to needed something.  Feed the walruses or something.  I'm not sure what they do.  Duke Energy.  They do something energetic, I guess.  Their nice letter suggested a ludicrous and inflationary contribution for the month.  I decided to send them $25 and let it go at that.  The penguins or whatever will just have to go fishing for themselves if they get hungry.
While I was there, I decided to pick up another medium flat rate box in case the one from Aztec got squooshed or something.  Gone!  Only one large flat rate box in the building and nothing from there on down to some shipping envelopes.  Either there is a box shortage, or the lethargic employees simply dis-remembered to put them out.  I did pick up a couple of shipping labels in case I dropped a jelly donut on the one I have.  If worse comes to worst and the box comes with a big hole in the side, I can patch it up with tape and a shipping label or something.
I thought about asking for a box but decided not to.  What if something had made a poo poo on their stack of boxes in the back.  Maybe.... something like a ..... I don't know.... a jackalope let's say.  Just supposin'.  I took my shipping labels, mailed my check, and beat it out of there before they recognized me.  Best wishes.  G

Longhorns are pretty easy going.  They don't bother with anybody as they figured with them huge horns, no one's gonna bother with them.

A jackalope on the other hand, they're pretty wily.  As long as you stay on their good side they're perfectly fine.  The minute you look at them cross eyed, watch you backside.  They're pretty darned quick with them antlers and can pack quiet a punch when they get a running start.  They're hard to avoid being that they can dart around pretty quick.  Best to keep a carrot in your back pocket when you're around them.

Some nice picks there! :tu:

Either there is a box shortage, or the lethargic employees simply dis-remembered to put them out.
As bad as the employees at your Post Office can be, I'd say both. My guess is they ran out and forgot or didn't care to request more.

You can also order the boxes for delivery to you, but that is not a fast process.

The box is on the move!  According to what little I know, the box arrived in Austin, TX.  Possibly by longhorn.  I think tracking the box is my favorite part of this whole thing.  Hassle with the post office is undoubtedly the worst.
I always enjoy seeing what everyone keeps.  I had to look up the No Box tool or whatever it is called.  I have seen a Flissa multi somewhere or other.  They seem to be good quality.  Flissa sounds like what a little girl would name a pony.
If the internet stays up today, I will try to keep everyone posted on the Sos surprise box's progress.  Best wishes.  G

USPS tracking says expected delivery on Monday by 9PM.  Of course the mail doesn't deliver at night.  I don't know why they say that.  Probably get a failed delivery ticket by Tuesday.  I will likely go to the post office Tuesday evening before they close and try to get the box.  Best wishes.  G

They won't deliver it.  I don't mind driving the two miles or so to the post office.  Easy trip.  I actually don't mind dealing with the post office here.  It is kept up clean as a pin inside, and I don't really have difficulties with the employees.  No boxes?  Maybe they are just plain out of boxes.  I have a medium box that I never assembled.
I wouldn't mind seeing some photos of the Dutch SAK.  Maybe after a clean-up.  It looks in pretty tough shape.  Interesting anyway.  Aztec did a nice clean up on that old Voss multi from the last time he had the box.  I'm looking to find something that I can carry in a (later this year) challenge that I signed up for.  Has to be something specific and I want a beater to carry.  If I find one in the box, I will take a photo of it naturally.  Otherwise I might have to troll a flea market.
Best wishes.  G

I like our post office over here.  Nice folk, pretty clean.

When I went to go drop off the box I chatted with the lady about her granddaughter and how both her granddaughter and I were rock hounds when we were kids.

The Dutch SAK is currently a nail breaker.  I think it'll clean up well but I wanted to open it so I can clean it well and re-peen it to see if that'll help loosen it up a bit more.  I'm pretty sure the scales will start falling apart even more once I do so though.  I have some chunks of pecan wood I could try and use for scales but I'm not sure yet.  It's been added to my long list of projects.

The box is now in Greenville, SC.  Evidently it was shipped from a point far enough south to miss being carried by mule across the mountains from Tennessee.  That route is slower.  Even though it takes mail withing 5 miles of my house, it doesn't stop here.  Instead it is taken to Greenville, SC where bored employees take it out back and throw darts at a circle that they draw on the box.  For some reason when my little friend would send me a birthday card (she lived a half mile from my house and drove by my mailbox every day) the card always went to Greenville SC and then up to Asheville, NC and 70 miles back here.
Greenville is where the girl with the bicycle lives with her mom.  She takes packages from there to Asheville.  This might be just about the last trip she makes before she plans on leaving her bicycle out to be stolen again.  The tires are getting thin, and she hopes the thief will put on some new rubber before he tries to sell it at the flea market.  Again.  I hope she takes along one of those little patch it up kits.  Remember the kind where you shuck out the tube and use the cheese grater on top of the tobacco tin the pieces come packed in.  You make a patch and smear glue on the spot you roughed up with the cheese grater and set it afire and slap on the patch.  Works good.
I bet I lost some of you on the tire patch kit story.  The ones who remember are sitting around chuckling.  So, it is making the trip to Asheville now I suppose.  I don't think her mom lets her ride in the dark.
I said last time would be IT for the box coming to me.  This time I really mean it.  Win, lose, or draw, extra innings, or rain delays.  This is IT.
     Happy Father's Day to all.  That's today, isn't it.  I dis-remember.  Best wishes.  G

It is?  Let me double check....  Yeah, it is.  That would make today open for naming.  Today could be.... Happy Space Junk Day.  Everyone has to go outside and find an unidentifiable piece of burnt debris.  Wrapped in carbon fiber.  I already looked this week.  Didn't find diddly.
And to think I already left out a special dinner for the rackos last night to celebrate Father's Day Eve.  Leftover macaroni and an egg that had a crack in it.  Father Raccoons love eggs.  They will probably get a bag of Pepperidge Farms turkey stuffing instead next Sunday.  Extras from Thanksgiving.  Got to get rid of it somehow.  Best wishes.  G

I got rid of a bunch of canned food last week. Donated it to the church near my house. They run a food pantry, so I hope someone (ideally a family with children or someone elderly) will get some nutrition out of it.

If all goes well, Gary will get the little peachy-colored slip tomorrow. But I still think Tuesday seems more likely. Even more likely is that I've had my last go at the box.

The box arrived in Asheville, NC about 3 hours ago.  The bicycle girl pedaled as fast as her little legs would go, but had a flat on the way.  She skinned her knee just a little but wound up hitching a ride on a produce truck to the postal facility.  When they heard about her troubles, the staff there pitched in and bought her two new tires and tubes.  After a little rest and a grape slurpee, she caught a ride back to Greenville with an outgoing mail truck.
I imagine the box will make its way toward my local post office tonight.  It will be carefully placed on a shelf and something else stacked in front of it so nobody there can find it.  The cute brunette who drives the mail truck by my house is still working the same route.  I made sure to check just the other day.  Best wishes.  G

Box left Asheville about 5AM.  Last seen headed west.  About a two-hour trip if the driver stops for a coffee and donut somewhere.  Depends on where he has to go, I suppose.  I will probably check later this evening and see if the cute mail driver has left me a claim ticket.

Hi Looper,
If anything, she is even nicer than I said.  Trouble is, she knows I won't be there, so she never takes the parcel on the truck.  It is in the post office right now.  Not with her.  Maybe she filled out the failed delivery ticket and will put it in the mailbox.  Maybe she will fill it out at the end of her shift and put it in the mailbox tomorrow.  Either way, it will have tomorrow's date on it for pickup.  That means they won't let it out of the post office until tomorrow.
I do like watching the tracking information.  That for me is more fun than opening the box.  I am about boxed out.  I think Dan and I are both going to take a pass on doing this again.  Maybe I can upload a photo tomorrow.  I am having trouble with photos today.  Best wishes.  G
