It's been 3 years
on: February 08, 2023, 10:56:21 PM
Three years ago today I took my big Daisy dog for her last car ride.  We still had Megan's dog Jax, but it wasn't the same- he wasn't MY dog, although I didn't love him any less for it, and a few months ago when it was his time, I experienced being dog free for the first time in about 25 years.

It's been a weird thing to get used to- I still think that I have to go out one more time before bed every night, and I have to rush home from whatever I am doing to take the dog out, before quickly realizing that there is no dog to look after.

Fortunately, there is a cure, and his name (for now at least) is Dasher.  We may change it when we meet him in a couple of weeks.

He's some kind of terrier mix, and he's coming up from a rescue organization in Texas.  That, and him being the smallest dog either of us have ever had is about all we know about him- oh, and he is probably around 8-9 months old.

Megan and I are looking forward to getting him and making him a permanent part of our crazy lifestyle.

In the past, I have always had two dogs, and the new one was largely trained by the old one, but we are starting from scratch with Dash!  Wish us luck!

We haven't seen this guy in the flesh, but we are expecting him to be 20-30 pounds.  A far cry from the 60-70 pound range we are usually in or the 140 pounds my Daisy was.

Congrats on the new family member.  He looks adorable.

I grew up with big dogs, but discovered the joy of smaller dogs when living in apartments.  The 20-30 pound range is awesome, because they are big enough to play and do adventures with while small enough to be lap dogs.

My Daisy was a lap dog- all 140 pounds of her!

Although for her my lap was more of a pillow for her head, but that's just details!

My father just got a Shih-tzu a few months ago, and  she is a micro dog, even by my family standards.  We've always had corgis, and my brother currently has two.  Minnie the Shih-tzu is aptly named as she was the runt of the litter and probably won't even hit 10 pounds- an ideal service dog for a retired veteran who just lost his wife of almost 60 years.

I think Dash is going to be maybe 20 pounds, if that, Megan thinks he will be closer to 30 when full grown.  We had hoped to have a dog under 20 so it could fly if we needed to go anywhere (my family is about 1500 miles away) but I think Megan's father would be upset at a missed opportunity to dog sit if we take him with us!

We've known about Dasher's impending arrival for over a month now, and it's been a long wait.

That's a long way to go to adopt a puppy but I am glad you've found each other.  You may find that Dasher suits the little guy.  I was going to change my cats' names when we got them from the Humane Society, but after a month we couldn't think of anything better so they still have the names they came with.

Funny you should mention that.  Is I being fostered with his sister Dancer and we consider3d taking both of them, but there is a significant cost to bringing them from Texas.

What was the reason you decided to adopt from the States and not locally ?

There aren't a lot of dogs up for adoption locally.  This has been a problem across much of Canada since the pandemic started.  Everyone was stuck at home and adopted a pet to keep them company.

A few were dropped off at shelters when people went back to work, but those tended to be adopted quickly too.

There are apparently a lot of shelter dogs in Texas and there are a lot of Texas dogs already in my neighborhood.  I guess we are just being trendy.

It's not just Texas but a lot of the southern states have an overpopulated shelter problem due lack of spey and neutering. Most of the dogs up for adoption here in Minnesota are from the south. Cassie is from Alabama.

While there are dogs here from other places, almost all of the imports are from Texas for some reason.  There seems to be a few local rescues that for some reason, all get dogs from Texas.

Usually many of our "import" dogs come from northern communities, but i guess even those places have run out of strays.

Dash is here!

He's smaller than Megan's cat, and a lot smaller than we thought.  I don't think he'll hit 15 pounds, let alone the 30 Megan thought.

He is, but Megan's cat Layla is very offended by Dash's mere existence.  Hopefully she gets over it.  She's not a big cat, but she's bigger than he is.

We had been discussing how big he would be, trying to guess from photos and videos, but we couldn't see eye to eye on it.  Megan was sure he was going to be closer to 30 pounds.  I figured 15-20 at most.

Now that we have seen him I doubt very much he will even make 15 pounds.  He is a teeny bugger, but that just makes him easier to travel with, and easier to put in a kayak.  Now all I need is for spring to arrive!

I'll definitely do that- in the meantime, proff that Texas dogs don't like winter (or any of the gear necessary to endure it!) and a pic post-bath, after being properly floofed.
