I need a new light
on: February 03, 2009, 02:20:49 AM
Like I need a hole in the head, but this little guy is really calling to me:

Pentagon MOLLE

Anyone have one of these, and if so, what do you think of it?

Def I don't have that flashlight but I was considering getting one at some time. Eventually I dropped that due to its relatively low light output (up to 40 lm), low battery life (3hr) and price tag compared to the competition. If you're after a small anglehead LED light I'd suggest checking out the zebralight options or designs like the Ritter eQ. I EDC a H30-Q5 for the last year and I'm quite satisfied with it overall. Just my 0.02$...  ::)

I've been thinking of getting one for a while also Def. We may have to get one soon as we might not be able to find them anymore as there are reports that Pentagon light has gone out of business.

Pentagonlight out of business!!??! :o  Anyone have any more info on that?

That truly is sad, I love my MOLLE LED; I've got it on me now.  It's my light while I'm around the house, and I love the design.  Small, but no so small that you have to fumble around to press the on switch..and it can be layed down flat on it's back to light a small room or area, it can be clipped to a shirt pocket and shed light on whatever you're doing...there is also a filter (a few colors are available, I've got blue) which comes in handy while you want to keep you night vision.  The compass is nice, but I don't need much use for it day to day.  Solid light I must say, I've dropped it on tile a few times and it hasn't been phased at all.

Overall, it is worth tracking down for a good price..do a search on EDCforums.com I think I saw one for sale in the last week or two (might be gone).

EDIT:
And it uses a plain ol' AA battery!

Information is kinda sketchy, but it seems that Surefire took Pentagon light to court over some patent infringements and false advertising. http://www.candlepowerforums.com/vb/showthread.php?t=196545
I'm just going by info from that thread and I maybe wrong. Some CPF members called PL and were told the the company is no longer in business. The PL website is still up though.

Well, I ordered one just this past Saturday.  If you would like to wait for it to ship, I will be happy to post thoughts and pics.

I have one , I use it as an emergency light in my apartment . Works OK , gives low output but very long runtime . The Compass kept under the tailcap/filter is crap , needs to be replaced with a descent button compass . I found it gimicky and would not EDC it , just sits on top of my bookshelf waiting for a powerfailure .

If only I had a place to ship it to, I'd take you up on that!  :D

Seriously, I am moving very soon and so I'm reluctant to start anything on it's way to me yet, since I don't know my new address yet- the wife and I still have to decide on which house we like, and the Multitool.org motto "Get Both!" doesn't seem to work for me right now!

Thanks anyway!

Got it. Love it.

Oh, sure... one might describe it as gimmicky. Some may even claim that it is poorly thought out, what with needing to remove the tail cap and risk dumping the battery to use the compass.

But f@ck all that noise.. this thing is great!

Okay, first of all, mine glows in the dark. IT GLOWS IN THE FRICKIN DARK. That alone wins second childhood style points with me. Oh, sure.. it isn't a Six Million Dollar Man action figure, but it is a glow in the dark flashlight, and that would have rocked socks around the block back when I was a wee lad. And it still does now that I am an adult.

Output for an EDC light is perfect. And I do mean an EDC light. I don't think anyone was trying to say this light was intended to search out enemy aircraft in the night sky or identify ninjas in the treetops above the fortress at midnight. It fills the need for a pocketable or clipable light that is good for walking into a building with no electricity, hiking back to the tent in the woods at night, etc.

Why not have a back up compass on you? Where's the harm? Yes, you have to take it off the light to avoid the battery making it wonky, but if you really needed it, isn't it nice to know it is there? And if you use a compass so often that the removal of the tailcap from your flashlight to get at it is a problem, I would suggest that you not use a compass that is mounted in the tail of your flashlight in the first place. It is an extra detail just in case, not a primary compass for frequent use.

I personally like the molle clip and angle head on job sites where it can be clipped to me or my tool bag and I don't have to hold it to light my way or the subject.

Runs on one double A, and that is cool. I know those 123s are supposed to be the thing and all, but I don't want to pay stupid money for super batteries that I will use up frequently, and I also don't want to have to stock up on batteries via the net just to get a decent price. On top of that, all my other daily kit uses AA, as do many consumer electronic devices, and I can get one anywhere anytime for next to nothing. You could produce a usable AA in just about any house or office anywhere. I like that.

I won't get into all the technical stuff because I can't and it would bore me to try. I'll just say that this is a nice bright little light that is good for an EDC light, and it has some cool gadgety features, some of which are actually really useful.

And it glows in the dark and that is just brilliant!
