Day 1

Combo carried was the Case 61011 Hawkbill Pruner and Schrade Walden 204S

(Image removed from quote.)

Only thing used was the scissors on my Charge TTi (which is just "Assembled in US of US and Imported components") to trim a busted fingernail.

Nice pruner blade!  :like:

Since I have decided to carry this knife, it might as well be sharp.  I started out with a medium Arkansas.  The steel seemed hard.  The blade is hollow ground, so it is easy to sharpen.  I pulled about a dozen strokes on each side, then switched to a razor hone.  A half dozen strokes on each side finished it up.  The edge was usable and would shave hair.
So far, so good.  The scales are held on with little screws as you can see.  The knife is French of course.  No markings for country or steel type.  There is a trademark.  More on that later.  The bolsters and liners are thick and steel.  It is a forced joint type.  Easy to open.  Hard to close.  Feels a little like the cap lifter/large screwdriver on a newer Victorinox that has the nub on that blade.  Length of the handle is 96mm.  It lies in the pocket rather well.  Best wishes.  Gary

I think it was Comis who asked if the blade on my little knife was a FFG?  I had to look that up.  So many acronyms and abbreviations on this site.  Your EDC might be an OC with OS tools like your PST.
I suppose the blade looking like a flat grind is just the angle of the photo.  The only flying creatures outside when I took this picture were mosquitos.   ;)
It is good to hear from Reamer.  Keep eating your chicken and non chicken meals and stay tuned for MTo.  Best wishes.  Gary

This is definitely one of the "best value" knives I have owned, I got this from the Big river site for 20 bucks, and it has all the features I found desirable for a good user knife.

Good solid mid back lock and thumb stud placement, thick spine for integrity while having a deep hallow grind for a decent slicing capability, great textured handle with good ergo.  Though it is just an inexpensive knife, I felt Dozier definitely shows how a well design knife is not limited by budget.

Definitely a classic solid choice for a good value folder.  :salute:

Sfarziglia and James Smith Solid Stick umbrella:

(Image removed from quote.)

Since I started with the foldable monster and it really has been raining lately I decided today’s training should include these two. Some Vigny/Bonafont and Cielo&Meraviglia Monsignore style drills performed.

The level of speed, purity and effectiviness however is strongly debatable ;)

Thank you Sir

Day 1
I decided to go with the ubiquitous Okapi "3 star".
These were produced in great numbers until a few years ago,the company downsized and relocated not far from where I live (I've never visited, but I'm thinking I should soon).
These knives used to be made in Germany at some point,I'm trying to acquire 1  but have been unsuccessful thus far.
These knives are the most common folding knife and weapon in South Africa, and many a drunken brawl (amongst a host of others) has ended with at least 1 of the participants being on the receiving end of an Okapi.
There is even a local knife-fighting system (called the piper system) where the Okapi is the edged weapon on choice.
There are a few sizes and 1 or 2 blade styles,I'm thinking of buying a few over the course of this challenge.
I received this particular specimen in a trade.

I have a plastic-handled Big Sable around here. One of the best, if not the best knives with gloves I've got (especially if you swap out the ring in the ratchet lock for a bigger split-ring).

I didn't know they'd downsized. Guess it explained them not being available here in the States for about a year or so.

Sorry about the acronym, I know 3/4 of what you said but still don't know what the OS tools are?

Anyhow, just curious about what stays on the bolster, Laguiole is well known with the fly (direct translation, but technically it probably is a bee) on top, but I know there are other insect/animal that also rest on top too.

Day 2

Alright, after last night's mishap, I decided it was only fair to switch out Shadow for a used knife as well.

[ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]

This is Crown. I have two of these little red campers, and I think they're fairly overlooked. The tools are (at first glance, we'll get into a tougher examination later)  identical to the traditional jigged delrin and bolster models, but you can often grab them on eBay in great condition for what a dinged up Kamp King would cost.

So, same plan as before. Shelley Sr. and/or Crown in my pocket everyday, testing them as fairly as I can. I would say that they're in fairly similar shape, both obviously carried, but with no serious abuse. Shelley Sr. has latest Imp tang stamp I can find documented, dating from the mid 50s through the late 80s (the can opener is stamped with the patent number if that tells us anything). Unfortunately, I can't find any resources on dating Irish Imps (open to insight from the brain trust), but this is the closest I can get to keeping them roughly contemporaneous.

I was going to do an out of the box sharpness test, but I wound up sharpening them both, so that'd only show how (in)consistent I am.

I'll do individual tool closeups later today, as well as possibly the first test or two. (And maybe actually use them for something.)

Once more on food prep duty. You can see this side of the handle is completely different. It's made of horn and totally artisanal. The F&F is not great (not by any measure) but it kind of gives it some old times appeal.

Day 2
USA

Bridge City Tools MT-1 Multitool

I do lots of woodworking and a sliding bevel gauge is a very necessary tool.  This was a special edition in stainless made a few years back. It not only is a sliding bevel gauge, but it includes arms for making dovetail angles in hard and soft wood too, among other multi- use functions.  Perfect for the pocket or apron when in the shop. Made in USA too!

(Everything but) Can Opener Test

While still labeled as can openers, I think a lot of people use these more for opening blister packs and other packages now. I ran some errands this morning, so here's the initial test results.

Shelley Sr. opened a sharpening puck that came in the mail the other day. Performed well.

[ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]

Crown opened a pair of calipers so I can measure all these tools for all of you. I feel like the angle it would slice well at was a little narrower, but that may have just been an issue with the different packaging. I'll continue testing through the month, but initial results would be a B for Crown and an A for Shelley Sr.

[ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]

Here's both openers open next to each other. The calipers show them to be identical in all respects but one: Crown has a much thicker hook. 4.4mm vs 3.3mm if I'm using the calipers right (it's been a long time since shop class...)

[ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]

Bonus, here's the link to the patent for the can opener! https://www.datamp.org/patents/displayPatent.php?pn=2391732&id=40228

Definitely one to add to the list mate

Grabbed a Coleman Western 954 (1987 if I recall correctly) off my dresser to open a case of "shakes" I drink when I'm running too late to make breakfast.

The big SE blade is a force to be reckoned with on the tough jobs.

Only had an Esee Izula on my hip, and as I was reloading my weed eater, I needed to pry a melted remnant of string off the spool, so I used the Free T2 that was laying on my desk.

I have an insane number of Leathermans, but this one is the only one that never worked out (bulky, fewer tools than the SAK Tinker despite the weight, and a blade that looks like it can be opened one handed, but it can't).  I should try the K-series, I guess.

Rebar was put in the pocket soon after, and it cut weed eater string and rebar binding wire with the cutters, as well as a ton of brush with the serrated blade

I have enjoyed the thread so far.  Old Lefty has delightful items.  Mr. Roberts is giving us an in-depth and well written Kamp King type report.  Sherry and Sr. Santos have been cutting up delicious looking foods.  Lots of nice tools and other knives from everywhere.
Time for the attachments.  Best wishes.  Gary

So,our area fibre main cable is constantly being severed (by a "third party" according to the ISP),so my pc use is limited. And then there's loadshedding as well.
Fun and games

A Derek Rausch one-piece hollow handle knife,I bought in 95 or 96,at that stage this was the only model offered and it didn't even come with a sheath then.
I got John Leth to make a couple sheaths for me (1 to carry a mini Maglite on the side). Interestingly,I was told that John made the sheaths for Chris Reeve back when CRK was still based here (they both were in Pinetown,KZN).
I carried this knife for a few years and used it hard.
Derek offers more models now, with sheaths

This is the first Laconico knives I got, when it was being offered from the Massdrop (or later on 'Drop').  It was made by WE knife.  Really enjoy his simplistic, yet utilitarian design.

As much as I hated the whole 'drop' culture in my knife collecting hobby, this tread for collaboration does start opening door to custom designer knives that usually was out of my budget range.

I liked Drop better when they started (Massdrop back then), and just got deals on "normal" merchandise. I got a Kabar there years ago for $60 when they were generally floating in the high 70s to low 80s. It slowly drifted into "designer" stuff that was marked down to slightly more expensive than quality "mainstream" versions of the same thing. Now they've apparently locked into headphones and mechanical keyboards exclusively? Both products I buy (though not at their marked-up mark-downs), but kind of disappointing to see them from go from a useful deal site to some of weird "nerd cred bling" operation.

I probably not the best person to explain what Massdrop/Drop is.  But as far as I know, it is a website providing 'group buy' opportunities, so consumers could purchase it with a discount.  Massdrop/Drop itself is not a long term knife dealership, so each batch of knives they ordered was inherently a scarcity, once they were gone they might be gone for good.  And their company usually refer to a new offering as a 'drop'.

I remembered catching onto their game a bit later, and a chance to participate in those 'regular' offerings would be nice.

But as an oversea buyer, I remembered being a little bit cautious to what they brought to market, since they are not really a dealership.  I even remembered they had a lot problems with one of the earlier knife deals, and a lot of enthusiasts were quite upset with how they handle the issues.

Their site was made popular because of the few exclusive knives they brought onto the market back then.  But eventually, I think most designers/makers who wanted to outsource would just directly deal with oversea manufacturing, so Massdrop/Drop knife business might have just phrased out overtime.
