I'm an idiot
on: April 24, 2025, 04:28:07 AM
I have been saving for a nice new Victorinox spirit X for some time.

Found a place that sold them and went for a nice train ride to pick it up.
Paid over my $300.00 and a little bit and put it and the receipt into a nice bag (in case I got searched and could prove it was a new purchase)

When I got off the train, I noticed I didn't have the bag.
The train had left the station.
I went to the station attendant and told him what I did, he said he would get the next station to have a look for me.

Long story short, its gone, the damn thing hasn't even been opened.

I'm gutted, but I have decided that it was never meant to be.
I'm going to just stick to my Swiss tool that I have had for a few years now instead.

I do have a habit of leaving things on planes and trains and even busses over the years.
Lost umbrellas, coats, hats, bags and even a computer once.
I have lost two rather expensive Akubra hats and a one-off leather hat made especially for me.
Planes are better because they have gone back on board and found my tablet, kindle and wallet and hat every time.
I eventually get over it.

But its a real bummer
The wife recons that if my head wasn't attached it would be running around on some train or plane somewhere.

I really have to start taking notice.
But, once an idiot, always an idiot I guess.

That really stinks!  I'm so sorry to hear about that.  Are you sure it got left on the train?  Were there no cameras to record who took the bag?

That sucks so much.
That's why I check myself and my bags and any area I'm leaving from for anything I might have left behind. I might look silly patting myself down, but I'd rather look silly with my keys still in my pocket.

Were there no cameras to record who took the bag?

It was someone smiling from ear to ear.

Also, everytime I pat myself down, I have forgotten nothing, and everytime I don't, my phone slipped out of my cargo pocket in the car, or my sunglasses are on the floor, or my keys still in the door.

Gutted by this.  I feel awful for you, but as my therapist has said, "you did something idiotic, but you are not an idiot."  Yeah, it's semantics, but it makes a difference in how you see yourself.  I would still check back with the train station, somebody might have turned it in later and it is sitting in the lost and found waiting to be claimed.

That's awful. I hope someone did the right thing and turned it in to lost and found.

I recently lost my sunglasses case. Luckily my sunglasses were on my face when I walked back into the house. When my federal tax return arrives, I'll eat the $28 for a replacement.

Nope, she is gone.
No one turned it in.

This has been a wake up call.
But I can guarantee that Ill leave something behind again somewhere.
If it weren't for our crap knife laws, I would have immediately put it on my belt, but that's another story.

I will be a pensioner in a couple of months, so I wont have the option of buying one after that.
So I guess Ill never have a Spirit.
Such is life.

I have many other knives, and a Victorinox Swiss tool (the big one).
its a great tool, just a bit on the heavy side.

In over 60 years of carrying knives, this is the first I have truly lost.
I have misplaced many, one I dropped in the ceiling while doing some wiring.
But I found it months later when I knelt on it and it was under the insulation.
And my old Wingman that I thought irretrievable lost, only to find I left it on top of the cupboard.
I'm still looking for my 30 year old soldier, which I'm sure is around the house somewhere, it is a beaten-up old beast, but generally my go to for any rough work.
And I remember only a few weeks ago I thought I lost my Farmer X, when It wasn't in its sheath on my hip one evening, only to remember that I had taken it out before I went out for dinner, just in case I was checked for "weapons"

Oh well, such is life.

Last year my wife lost an expensive item during the safety scan at an airport. It was metal so she had to send it through the scanning machine, and in the hurry to reach the plane she just cleaned out her tray without checking whether it was all there.

It took a few days before she noticed it was missing. After some thinking where it got lost she contacted lost and found at said airport. They hadn't received any such item, but she registered a description and her contact info just in case it would show up later. Either way, little hope of it returning so we started the process with the travel insurance and actually having to file a police report. (As it wasn't still there someone must have removed it - as in theft). Anyway, a full two weeks later they call from the airport and say someone delivered an item they thought fit the description. And that was correct, and it was returned. Which I honestly thought was close to a miracle at that point .

That said, I've forgotten many things over the years. Some have been returned, some have not. (2 lost cell phones comes to mind - apart from the phones themselves all the stuff and contact info on them was a nightmare to get back up). I wouldn't call it idiotic though - sounds pretty human to me. Still smurfs quite intensely though!

(One happening was actually in Australia - someone had taken my luggage from the pickup spot at the airport. It had a fair bit of value in it. Later that evening it was returned to my hotel by a taxi with everything still there).

Seems likely an honest person grabbed your bag thinking it was theirs, and returned it once they realized their mistake.  Lucky break!

Indeed. At the time I thought either stolen or that there would eventually be some luggage left at the end which could identify the person. Which it turned out to be  - so I had good hopes. :)

Lost here, found there. Don't worry, everything is fine, you are not an idiot, it just happened that way.

but as my therapist has said, "you did something idiotic, but you are not an idiot."  Yeah, it's semantics, but it makes a difference in how you see yourself.

That is absolutely true.  Valkie, a moment of inattention makes you human, nothing else.

Thanks all.

I felt stupid, but it appears I'm just human.
My wife never forgets anything, like a steel trap, so she doesn't understand how I do.

But I got her back a couple of years ago when we were travelling to England.
We were suppose to meet the tour group at 1600 hours.
She misread it for 6.00 pm.
long story short, we missed that night out, but I have never let her forget it.

My worst experience was leaving my backpack with computer and all sorts of items, at the airport last year.
My backpack has patches from every country I have visited and is absolutely covered in them, all sown on individually.
I was in a bit of a rush and left it on the seat when I went to get my bag from the carousel, as it happens I got a phone call as I grabbed my bag and walked out of the airport to my car sans backpack.

It wasn't until I got home (75klm from the airport) that I realized I didn't have my bag.
As it was a late flight, there was no one at the airport to contact and I had to wait until morning, shocking night that was.
Thenext day I managed to contact the lost and found, described my bag and waited until they checked.
NO BAG.........

However, later in the day, the cleaner came in and handed my bag in to lost and found.
Lost and found wasn't open when the cleaner found the bag and he took it home to turn in the next morning.

Profound thanks and much relief when I picked it up.
Everything was intact and the cleaner wouldn't take a reward.

Sometimes it works out....

For those wondering, this happened because here everything is upside-down, so the ceiling is down and the floor is up. So Valkie dropped it down, towards the ceiling. :salute:

So sorry this happened to you Valkie… I wonder what the cost to ship is? Probably wicked expensive if not in Oz.

I do this too.

Same here...

And multiple times...

Phone, wallet, keys, multitool, pocketknife... Phone, wallet, keys, multitool, pocketknife...

And everytime I'm touching the designated pocket/pouch to feel if the item is there, our little girl goes "check", she must have witnessed this routine a thousands times  ::).
