Challenge within a Challenge

Day 16, one day beyond point of no return to completing this difficult feat!

Tell us why!!! 🤪.    YOU, yes YOU 😵‍💫. Bought your first OHT Leatherman tool!

There had to be a reason, a real reason to take a clam pak off the peg board, and hold it, or study ed some nit on your computer screen and then add to the online cart and give away your billing information.

I challenge each of you to tell the truth, WHY !  I am curious.

I will admit, Rich_SD’s post caused a question to surface because I have never encounter an OHT LM TOOL in the wild.  I have seen electricians with Surge on their belt, maintenance workers with a SuperTool on their belt or in their portable cart.  A motorcycle rider with a Gerber pancake sheath next to his Buck110 sheath.  Farmer with almost destroyed nylon sheath with a Rebar or Wave  on his belt, even dump truck driver fueling his rig at the gas station having something hanging from his belt, a knife, vice grip holster…. But never a OHT., a Crunch once but never a OHT.

So, please tell your story with your daily picture in the next few days.   Thank you in advance😁

I liked the full OHO idea initially and it's unique looks, and was thinking about getting one for quite some time. But only after a Vic. Spirit and later on a ST200 fell into the sand at the beach, I was looking for something that still works fine after hitting the dirt and thought about the OHT again. The Spirit didn't like the sand at all while the ST200 worked fine still but made a horrible crunchy noise with some implements.
So far it's only a theory but I do believe the OHT will be doing just fine if I ever drop it at the beach.

So those are my excuses. I have none for the second one I bought though  :dunno:

Just like you, I have seen a lot of Leathermans in the wild, but never a OHT.  I have never seen a Swisstool in the wild either.  I have seen a lot of Geber MP600s, but I think that's due to my job with the military.

Day 16

My toolset for this cold January Tuesday
[ Quoting of attachment images from other messages is not allowed ]

The battery of an exterior door sensor for my alarm has gone low due to the colder temperatures. Now must change it with fresh one, a task I should’ve done this fall😵‍💫🥺🙄. (Yes, I heard that voice telling e my me to get it done!🙄)

My OHT adventure started  on a boring evening after dinner while I was on the road working in Grand Rapids, (I typically left home on Monday and returned on Friday night).   After supper, I traveled west to explore the Cabala’s in Wyoming, more precisely to see what knifes were on the racks… I had a gift card in my wallet, thanks to the hotel points I earned from being on the road!  Cabala’s, Amazon and Walmart cards were my consolation prize, usually exchange points for a mixture of $100 to $500 at a time. Once or twice a year.
Anyways at the store I find that a in store special of 20% of ALL Leatherman products was happening.

I already had a ST300, a SS Rebar, so what to get???
Oh, the Coyote Rebar (so cool), and next to it on a peg was a BO OHT?  (WTH-eck?)

I think I blacked out.🙄.    Maybe I bought both that visit, I did have $100 gift card.  May have to review my MTo archives😁

The first OHT was my first BO LM tool, gritty. I remember washing it off in the hotel sink, drying with the hair dryer and then oiling down with some light  oil from my tool kit.  It had the this cool sliding plier head, similar to a Diesel Gerber I had found at a pawn shop.
But, wait, I can open the blades without ejecting the pliers, 😁.

This tool did not go on my belt, instead I strapped the sheath  onto my soft tool bag.  The seatbelt cutters helped cut through the 16-12 or 16-24 cable encasements , the small screw driver fit into the connector block as a back up, so this was cool.

It worked, was not pretty, but it worked.

Then I retired!😁.   Got a part time gig doing maintenance at Y.  Then a MTo challenge for the OHT. I completed, and thought, this tool attracted much interest from a fellow member, I gifted it to him!  RapidRay our cheer leader.   He loved it, he used it, shared pictures slicing his lunch time apples, working rooftops cleaning A/C units,  he was happy!

I on the other hand missed my OHT, there was  an empty space in my tool grip!🥺.  So, summer of 2020, I searched the bay for a bargain BO OHT, and found one, practically brand new. And, after watching the listing, I placed the only bid and it arrived a week later.  My 2nd OHT. I was now whole.   And then this last harrah challenge and here I am with my OHT2!☺️

Nice Sod Buster  :like:

Bourbon is another  good reason.

Use the OHT, a sip of bourbon! I can do that!

Yes, likely in combo with your pain numbing pills, it will allow you to do something that will be much More painful than just the sciatica😵‍💫.
Suggest you wait.  Tea, hot, maybe the strongest beverage to enjoy…

And, just a suggestion, carry the OHT on the other side🥺

Day 17

Lisa  provided an idea, cutting paracord with her PE blade,  as that is my normal go to for cutting cord😉

But, I have been perplexed by LM including a gut hook blade on the OHT, as the tool is not a hunting tool, let alone can not imagine it being used for gutting.  And then, is it a good strap cutting tool as you would use to slice through a seat belt, but then the OHT is not really a rescue tool either.  Anyways, I would always select the SE to make short work of a seatbelt strap🙃

So, if I was out hiking, and needed a quick tent, and needed to cut paracord, could the  hook blade CUT IT🤪

Yes it CAN,
[ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]
Smoothly…
[ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]
Quickly!👍

And then I compared it to my Charge +,  the hook blade profile half the size, not a gut hook either and being on back side of the SE, definitely not for rescue.

And it really does not cut paracord smoothly either, maybe shoe strings!
[ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]
Kinda ragged…

Thoughts?     Still perplexed with oxegen bottle wrench!  HALO jumps?   Or for Nursing home use?

The idea behind the shape is, I think, to prevent whoever is belted in from getting cut by the blade. The shape of the tool pulls the belt up and away from the person.  That being said, the only time I've ever used a cutter for it's intended purpose was with a Swisstool RS and it's just a curved blade.

Now, I'd love to find some O2 ranks to try that wrench on along with the shackle key on my Opinel No. 8 Outdoors.  It's the official knife of the French Mountain Guide School.

Yes, the blade is better suited for seat belt cutter than the Charge’s🙄

With the OHT also having the adapter for gun brushes, it does seem practical for military option  like MUT

Yes, it works on oxygen bottles.  At the Y we have kits stationed at different points. 6 iirc.  And did have to inspect kits and check O2 bottles plus valves.

On my N08, I doubt I will ever need to try the shackle key, do not incision this man’s leg climbing anything with out steps, preferring an escalator or elevator. 😉

The point I did try to make is the OHT cutter handled rope cutting much better than the Charge +

Looking good Rich, What bourbon you enjoying and what is your favorite?

That's Woodford Reserve Double Oaked.  It's my favorite daily drinker.  Blanton's is probably my favorite, but it has gotten too expensive.  I have a couple bottles, but I just drink it on special occasions now.  Another one of my favorites is Henry McKenna 10 Year, but that one is getting too expensive too after it won some award.

Great choices Rich. On New Year’s Eve, I opened a bottle of Blanton’s and shared a few glasses with some friends. It is definitely a favorite. It is getting hard to find in my area.

Great comparison LC :like:
The OHT's gut hook / strap cutter reminds me to the Raptor's one. Very similar shape, plus the oxigen wrench. So they must have first responders in mind with this one I guess? Does kinda fit into a military scenario.
So what about the Charge's one then? I don't know  :dunno:  I like the OHT's one more for "alternative" uses  :tu:
