Official 2023 Chuck Yeager Memorial Challenge
on: October 23, 2023, 01:17:59 PM
Welcome to the 2023 Chuck Yeager memorial challenge!

This challenge has been run the last two years, and it's a really fun and easy challenge for December.

Giving credit where it's due, I stole the following from Nix.

“Unfortunately, many people do not consider fun an important item on their daily agenda.
For me, that was always a high priority in whatever I was doing.”  -- Chuck Yeager

Born 23 February 1923 in West Virginia, Charles E. Yeager went on to lead a remarkable career as an aviator. He started flying in the Second World War, becoming an ace while flying the impressive P-51.

He was shot down over France, but managed to escape and evade with the help of French resistance, the "Maquis". Despite a ban on having downed pilots fly combat missions again, Yeager was able to talk his way back into combat duty. He subsequently shot down a bomber headed for England….

After the war, Yeager went on to become a test pilot and was the first pilot to break the sound barrier on 14 October 1947, in the X-1 "Glamorous Glennis", going Mach 1.05 at 45,000 ft (13,700 m). He truly had “the right stuff.”  :salute:

In addition to being a pilot and leader, Yeager was an avid outdoorsman. He honed his skills as a boy growing up in West Virginia where he helped put food on the family table.

Yeager appears to have favored a small pocket knife, a tool he put to regular use either while hunting or while escaping back to friendly lines. During one interview at Shot Show in 1992, Yeager reported that he was a fan of the Victorinox Executive. Apparently the Vic Exec was all the knife he needed for two week backpacking trips into the Sierras to go fishing.

General Yeager passed away, surely headed for further adventures, on 7 December 2020.

The general's history with the Executive is the reason we did the first Chuck Yeager Challenge several years ago. It was a fun challenge then, as were subsequent repeat challenges.  When the Executive’s most renowned advocate died in 2020, a number of us thought it would be befitting to run a memorial CYC challenge in December. Let's do it again this December!  :tu:

If you don’t have an Executive already, you might consider using this challenge as the perfect excuse to obtain one and test it out, as well as a great way to honor a legendary man and his famous knife! They can be hard to find, but some are available on the secondary market.  :tu:

Rules:

➢  Carry and use the Victorinox Executive or Director exclusively during the month of December.
➢  Post a photo daily of your Executive daily. Bonus points for using the Exec to clean a Golden trout and photograph it.
➢  If you have to use a tool other than the Executive, stand at attention and explain yourself.
➢  On 7 December, please post a shot of your Executive along with a “parting glass”. ( Does not have to be alcohol, but it shouldn’t be empty. )
➢  Participants who compete the challenge can apply for the 30 Yeager badge.

Thank you for  the picture👍

Needed for reference, as I have hybrid, a custom model assembled by our own PA_Strunck.

I thought of extra Executive components.

So, I must ask if this package would be eligible for the Challenge?

The pen blade and scissors share the same back spring and ca only deploy one at a time😉

Why  the 2 pictures.    Plus, it is fitted with an ink pen in the custom scales.

During my first Yeager challenge I bought 4 or 5 executives.  Thing is that I already had 1, that I'd forgotten about.

A purist would say no.  However, reading Yeager's quote about having fun in the first post, and because part of these challenges is to have fun, I think Yeager would approve.

I am trying to decide if I want to roll with my original red scales or pick up a set of new black ones to slap on before the challenge. Hmm...

I probably can’t commit to a Dec challenge, but I’ll be following along. Used my Executive quite a bit yesterday.

A while back I decided not to do challenges two months in a row - I like to switch out SAKs frequently and I enjoy the challenges more if I spread them out a little more. So I'll be sitting this one out.

But I did this challenge last year and it was a great way to experience a SAK that I really didn't have any personal experience with before. The Executive is a great model and it really makes me wish for an alternate universe where the 74mm line took off instead of the 58mm size...

I'm doing the back to back again this year.
I'd love to visit that alternative universe where there would be a 74mm MidiChamp.
