Rocky Patels we're my go-to when I was younger. I've been liking Deadwoods lately and a local blend from the cigar and pipe shop I go to.
May the best of your past, be the worst of your future.

I enjoy trying new ones as well, but it seems like RP, Alec Bradley, and CAO are what I keep coming back to.

The flat screwdriver on this RRR is just a hair smaller at the tip than the Vic 91 mm version.  I have no doubts about its ability to turn any screw it fits.

Day 26

Final (for now) thoughts on the Rough Ryder Reserve Common Stock Pattern (stockman):

I think it is a solid buy for $50.

I believe it would complete all tasks that might reasonably be expected of it.  It feels stout and reliable in hand.

My main criticism, as detailed in my response to BPR above, is that there are sharp edges and corners on the outside of the closed knife, which make it less comfortable in hand and pocket than it could be if a few extra minutes had been taken at the factory to smooth/round these out.

Because this is a SAK-A-Like challenge and I neglected to do this earlier, here are comparison pics of the blades vs. 91 mm SAK…

Day 27

The Voss got some use today. Needed the awl to clean out the remains of a leaky battery and the flat head needed to assist in tightening the Lansky holder so I could sharpen my in-laws' knives.

Their knives are so bad that I wish I had brought my bench grinder so that I could give them a fresh edge. I'm wondering if it's better if I give them all a serrated edge instead.

My final MT for this SAK-A-Like challenge is the Benchmade Weekender.

This version features green micarta handles, large and small clip point blades, a bottle opener, and S30V steel.

F&F are as expected from Benchmade.

No activity for the Voss today as I had to work while I'm on PTO. Guess this is why I get the big bucks? :bnghd:

So I took the wife out to dinner this evening instead, while the in-laws watched the kids.

The bottle opener on the Weekender works well enough.

I suppose it ought to be good, since it is exclusively a bottle opener; it doesn’t have can opener, screwdriver, or any other functions.

You might be able to square the end of the bottle opener to turn it into a flat head, but I wonder if that would take away from it being a good bottle opener.  It's a good looking Benchmade regardless.

Drove down to New Orleans today.  On the way we stopped and "got fed at The Shed". They are quite well known in the world of whole hog BBQ.

Oh man... now I need some pulled pork or BBQ.  Well.. there goes that diet I was considering for New Years.

Day 29

Using the Voss to take apart a Kamp Knife and a Chinesium SAK-A-Like (that's off camera) to see if I can fix a really beat up Gerlach.  Both springs broke off and lost their other half.  This poor knife was rode hard and put away wet.  Shame because it doesn't look half bad for a SAK-A-Like.

Thinking about using the springs from each of the other knifes to try and fix it.  I'm even considering using some springs from some beat up Wengers that I have stored away.  Might be an effort in futility or it might be a good practice exercise.  Not sure yet of which.  I need to find an exploded view of a Gerlach so I can see how the springs are shaped.

Day 30

Back in the Leatherman drawer with the Bond. After carrying the T4 for a month, I'm going to say that Victorinox is much better at making Leathermans than Leatherman is at making SAKs. None of the implements on the T4 measured up to their Victorinox counterparts, and after a month of fussing with it, I never got comfortable with the "thumb" deployment.

It's a shame. I really want someone else to step up to compete in the KBMT space, but Leatherman isn't there (at least not yet).

Thanks to everyone else riding along. I'll see some of you over in the Classic Challenge in a couple days.  :hatsoff:

KBMT? I've been contemplating getting something like a T4. I like the Free P and K series, I know they won't compare to Vic but they're not bad.

The Weekender’s large clip point blade is a useful classic clip point design.  It can also be pinched open, which is a nice fingernail saver if using the knife frequently.

In contrast, the stubby small blade seems almost an afterthought.  The point is less acute than the large blade, and it can’t easily be pinched open.  Also, since each blade is on its own individual back spring, there is wasted space in the knife.  All things considered, I would rather have had two large blades as a sort of modern muskrat pattern than the existing large blade + small blade.

Both blades feature nail holes rather than nail nicks.  I personally find this to be neither an advantage nor a disadvantage.

Both blades also have half stops.  While I see the value of having half stops on tools like screwdrivers, I would prefer no half stops on my knife blades, but it isn’t a dealbreaker.

As usual, 91 mm Vic for comparison…
