fire-stick in a multitool?
on: March 21, 2007, 02:13:29 AM
I was wondering, is there a specific reason I have not heard of any multi tool having a fire-stick as one of its tools? Or have I missed something? Wouldnt this be quite a useful thing in a survival / hunting / camping multitool?

There was a SAK modded to include a Hotspark firesteel, but you'll have to be registered and logged in to read it.

do you guys think this is something feasible / attractive for a multitool like the ones produced by leatherman, gerber, SOG, victorinox?

I was wondering how they might do it, maybe a similar way to the knife, where you have a notch on one of the tools, and the firestick itself might be a tool which can be folded out and detached.

Maybe have some kind of dual functionality, with the magnesium coating on a tool such as a glass breaker, so saving space.

I had queried about this same topic months ago. Since then I don't believe there's been any new mods, at least none posted here or at EDCforums, with fire starters. It is definitely an idea worth incorporating into a multi. I'm surprised it hasn't already been done, especially with companies creating multis geared towards hunters/outdoorsmen.

If a fire steel was put in a normal multi-tool it would take up the location of 2 - 3 handle based tools. When I am out I want a bigger stronger blade than any multi has. Here in the UK it is a good excuse for having and using a Becker or something similar. A dedicated fire steel like the Strike Force has dry storage for tinder. I would guess most people use a butane lighter or a Zippo when weekend camping.
Just my 2p.

Yah, I have a fire steel in my emergency bag, but I use a lighter 99% of the time, so it wouldn't be worth the space it would take up to me.
