Any boxing fans in the house?
on: March 12, 2024, 10:08:56 PM
If so, maybe you want to avoid the upcoming Netflix spectacle between 57 year old Iron Mike Tyson and Jake Paul, who is a mere 31 years younger.

Okay, if George Foreman can do it, why not Iron Mike?  After all, he was arguably a much more powerful fighter than George the First, and he's still in great shape judging by how he looks on the celebrity roast circuit and the Hangover movies.

Well, apparently the folks at Netflix thought that the retired Mike Tyson might still be too much for Jake Paul to handle, so they have tried to even it out a bit.

Allegedly.....

Rule #1- Jake Paul is allowed to use performance enhancing drugs.
Rule #2- Both boxers will wear 14 ounce gloves, and Paul will also wear headgear.
Rule #3- Jake Paul will be allowed to "tag in" his brother when/if he needs a break.

I mean, it makes sense as Mike has disappointed many audiences in the past with lightning knockouts making for very little entertainment, such as the Tyson/Spinks fight.

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=HuaFIRD7_5Y&pp=ygUZbWlrZSB0eXNvbiB2cyBsZW9uIHNwaW5rcw%3D%3D

I remember that one like it was yesterday, even though it was 36 years ago.  If you needed a quick bathroom break, you probably missed it.

Anyways, despite the severe handicaps, it looks like Vegas odds makers are still giving Tyson the edge in this fight.

All of this has got to be pretty embarrassing for Jake Paul, especially if (when) he STILL loses after all of that.

My $0.02 - If Tyson still has even half of the punching power he had in his prime, Paul is in serious trouble.

I still believe that only Rocky Balboa could stop prime Tyson. Hence, the youtuber will go down if any real boxing rules are adhered to

Have read that Tyson has had some health issues the last few years so that may affect the "fight", but considering the speed and power he had in his younger years I think he will knock the block off Paul.

If I were a betting man, I'd put it all on Tyson.

The thing is, how much of that is nostalgia?

Tyson was an animal, but now he's an old animal, likely feeling the effects of the things he did when he was younger, as we all do.

Recent and significant health problems (like having been hospitalized for sciatica issues) may seriously affect him- especially if his back decides to recur around the time of the fight.  I don't know if any of you have experienced sciatica pain, but I have, and I'll tell you, I wouldn't be dancing around the ring with that going on!   :ahhh

Paul is young, in his prime, will have pads and whatever steroids he can get a hold of, backup to let him rest of need be, trained at a Mike Tyson training camp, has had ample time to study Tyson and, probably never saw him fight live.

I honestly believe that much of Tyson's success was due to intimidation.  You knew he had a hell of a right hand, you saw it in his last fight a few months ago and you were scared of it.

This kind of thing just isn't as impressive when you see it in archival footage.

I'm still thinking Tyson is taking this, but probably not by nearly as much as we think he will.

We've made it- tonight is the big night!

Anyone else tuning in?

Anyone have any thoughts or predictions?

I'm saying Tyson will take it within the first three rounds.  Any longer than that and the favor starts shifting towards the much younger Jake Paul.

Also, the rules aren't as restrictive as originally planned.

They are using 14oz gloves instead of ten, which is in Paul's favor as the much older Tyson will burn out faster, and it will provide a lot more padding when Iron Mike hits.  Will it be enough to offset the sheer, raw power of Tyson?

The rounds will also be shorter (8 minutes instead of ten) and there will only be ten rounds instead of 12.

The rules proposed earlier with Paul in headgear and able to tag in his brother have been dropped.

Is anyone else excited to watch this?

Two minute rounds, maybe?  I used to be a big boxing buff.  Read Ring Magazine.  Could quote the rankings.  Moved on to MMA and Muay Thai.  Nothing sadder than an old boxer.  No excitement here.  Best wishes.  G

Tyson was truly a savage when he was young.  A bad combo of frightening power, compact physique, the testosterone of 10 alpha tigers and an insane desire to kill.  Who else would try to eat someone's ear in the boxing ring?

I'm old enough to remember the days of Muhammad Ali.  I met him briefly when he was handing out books on Islam at the University of Louisville.  Prior to his funeral, my son and I drove around the streets of his funeral procession which were lined with people.  My son and I were waving at everyone, which he thought was a hoot.

Since the rise of MMA, however, boxing has seemed dull in comparison.  No choking?  No breaking limbs?  What fun is that?   :dunno:

Even so, I will watch tonight if I can remember.  I think they do the ring walk around 10pm EST here in The Colonies.  I think the rounds are 2 minutes, which will help Tyson.  I expect Tyson to try to end it quickly, kindling up that savagery of his youth, because a longer fight would favor the cardio of the younger man.  Tyson will briefly feel things out, and then rush in and try to overwhelm Paul.

That's what a lot of people are saying, but I just can't see Tyson taking a dive.  He's an animal, and I doubt very much even he could control himself enough to go down.

I see the odds makers are favoring Paul by a decent margin.  That's a bit of a surprise.

Paul is 10-1 with 7 TKOs.  And about 30 years younger than Tyson.  So there is that.   :tu:

Agreed.

But this is Tyson we are talking about.

And who has Paul actually fought?  It isn't hard to amass a good record when you hand pick guys you can beat to make yourself look good!

I’m on a night shift in the UK with no access to Netflix.

I’m worried it won’t be on catchup by the time I get home, because if Tyson lands an uppercut, I can seriously see him shredding his opponent’s unconscious face with his teeth!

I watched all three episodes of the documentary about the build up and training regimes this afternoon. Tyson saying he doesn’t want to die in hospital, he wants to die in the ring sent shivers up my spine.
I can’t imagine he could bring himself to throw a fight, and think he’s going to give it absolutely everything he’s got.  I don’t think even a cocky 27 year old is going to go toe to toe with him.

Well, we won't post any spoilers tonight then!

Silly question though.... Is it just me or is Jake Paul a hell of a lot bigger than he was a few months ago when this started?

I'm thinking he's hit the rounds pretty hard....

Post away, I’ll hopefully be following a text commentary on the BBC website.

Paul has definitely bulked up, but it’ll be extra padding on his chin he’ll be wishing for.

Two minute rounds will probably help them both if it lasts beyond three or four. If it goes all the way to eight rounds, that’s probably going to mean ia very dull fight.

There ahave been major streaming issues tonight. I hope they have it fixed in time for the big fight. The womens fight was a slugfest and a controversial desision.

Yeah I have lost my feed after seeing about half of the first round.

I'm going to try and reload a few times, but it's well after 1am here.  Maybe I'll have to watch it in the morning.

I gave up and did not watch it, because the buffering was making the stream unwatchable, and the main event was not going to start until maybe midnight EST.  The chick fight on the undercard was a real fight fo shizzle.

When you consider that NFL quarterbacks and professional tennis players tend to not make it past age 38 or so, its no shocker that 58 year old Tyson was not his old self.  He is still impressive for his age, though.

My stream crapped out completely. I didn't even get a chance to watch it last night.

I checked it out this morning, but I won't post any spoilers.  I think we should all do the same and avoid spoilers.  At least use the spoiler tag if you have to post something.

Let's give it another 12 hours from this post.  After that, it's all good.

I was totally shocked in round 6 when Tyson hit Paul so hard that Paul's head flew off his body and into the stands.  I can't believe they showed that.

I was able to watch it live but the picture was pixellated at times and it froze a few times. Total fail on Netflix for a live event that was hyped this much

Since the cat is out of the bag, the real shocker for me was when it went into overtime and they got married.

I did not see that coming.

I read that the fight was rigged right from the get-go.  Just another "build-up" fight for J Paul, but with a nice pay-off for Tyson; so a win-win from both their viewpoints.
