Its a shame you're not local.  I'm in need of a bike and don't have the relevant skills to bodge one from bits  :-\
I'm not taking any more mod orders at present, sorry.

What you want is what we call around here a " pub bike "  its old and rusty but in good working order except for the brakes , very important that the brakes don't work properly  ;)  The idea is you can leave the rusty old bike outside the pub and no one bothers to nick it and if they do it doesnt really matter . Oh and the idea behind the brakes not working , if you crash and fall off its because you've no brakes and nothing to do with the 8 pints of ale you've just consumed

 yeah ive heard of pub bikes, the chavs would still nick em here just for the hell of it, when i worked in london and used my bikes, i never cleaned them and covered the frames in tape to disguise there make etc, they worked well but looked rough, but a pub bike sounds good  ;) well the pub part does

There's a sense of logic in there somewhere I'm sure, I'm just struggling to find it at the minute.

It doesn't pay to have anything nice around these part's either, that's why my next bikes gonna be a Brompton :)

Neil, get a Raleigh 20, then you've pretty much got a bike for all the family once there over 10 :)
Give in, buy several Farmer's!!!!!!

We've got this lot.

If I can get somewhere secure to keep it I'll be looking there for a bike. Cost somewhere in the region of £70 depending on spec.

Nice one mate :tu:

Bicycle recycle point's a re a great idea if you ask me, trouble is there not usually local to you :-\

If you can't find one there though, look on ebay for a 10 speed, 80's racer/tourer as there superb everyday bikes once you've put more modern brake blocks on them, and can be had really cheaply :)

I always ran just a front brake on mine, and set it up so that it stopped on a dime. I also always cabled it right handed for the lever.

You see, one needs time to master a freewheel bike with only a front brake. It takes finesse. Most bike thieves have no finesse and intend to ride away from the theft quite quickly. Which is just perfect when they decide to stop.. and they grab a hearty handful of brake.

When they wake up (if they wake up), they might have enough unmushed brains to remember never to steal a bike with no rear brake.

I do run a rear brake as the weather's crap and it's too hilly not too ::)

But I love the clean lines of a fixie sans rear brake
