I doubt there will be a badge with so few participants, so you could do makeup posts for the days you missed or not, as you see fit.

this a Randall style hunter by Michael Stein of Denmark, got it may 15 years ago.
That's a pretty good-looking blade! :tu:

Day 8

The No. 12 got a break from kitchen duty again (leftovers for dinner tonight). But a page of an evil Brylane Home catalog had to be dealt with appropriately.

[ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]

The No. 12 handled the job well. And I discovered that apparently the black case I have my phone in somehow prevents the patina from showing well. I'd take the phone out of the case, but the phone is also black. Solution? Tilt the phone a little.

Day 8

This is a Case Folding Hunter (65 pattern) of the more common two-blade variety, featuring a saber-ground clip point blade and a flat ground skinning blade (both Case’s TruSharp stainless steel).   Not many other knives out there offer the cutting capability of two 4” blades in a single package.  Both blades have nail nicks, but the clip point blade is easily pinched open, offering a welcome respite for the fingernails.

What is unusual about this example is that it features bolster-less carbon fiber handles.  This keeps the weight down to a very manageable 4.3 oz (on my scale), which is about 40% lighter than comparable variants with bolsters and more common scale materials.

I do carry and use this one.  As a matter of fact, I had it in my pocket today when I took my seven-year-old son to a birthday party for one of his friends at a local park.  The parents hosting the party brought a variety of food for the kiddos, including some freezer pops.  However, no one (except yours truly) had any means of opening the freezer pops.  The plastic of the freezer pops was of course no challenge for the Folding Hunter’s sharp clip point blade.  So, win-win:  the kids got to enjoy their frozen treats, and I got to demonstrate the value of a pocketknife.

I've been curious about Condors. Seems they could be great bang for the buck.

Day 9

I think today was the first time I used a pocket knife to help make a sandwich.

The sharpened blade spread the mustard better than I figured it would. I just had to remember not to lick the excess off the blade. :D

Day 9

This is the Cold Steel Kudu Lite.  The blade is listed at 4 1/4”; I feel this might be a tad generous, but it is definitely over 4”.

The 5Cr15MoV steel won’t be anything to write home about, but should be OK.

I haven’t really carried this one, but at a cost of less than $10 and weighing only 2.8 oz, it seems like a good candidate to toss in a lunch pail or picnic basket.

Day 10

This, of course, is the Opinel No. 12.

Mine is Inox.  At nearly 4 3/4” long, the blade easily meets the parameters of this challenge.

Weighing in at just 3.9 oz, the No. 12 is on the lighter end for folders this size.

It’s an outstanding cutter and slicer, as all Opinels are.

FX has done such an outstanding job showcasing the No. 12 already that I’m not sure what else to add.

I do carry and use this one from time to time, but the No. 10 is really the Goldilocks Opinel for me, and the wooden handles are a bit of an Achilles heel for much of my use and carry.

Day 11
I used a CS SRK to quarter an apple today.
I got this in a trade with a friend. He did some bushcrafty stuff with it,and removed the handle and glued it on with Sticks Like smurf.
I like the tacky kraton handles.
I have a few other CS fixed blades, will use a few more on this challenge.

Yes, another apple. I seem to be hell-bent on keeping the doctor away.

These slices came out well enough that I didn't need the mandoline after all. They went to the oven immediately after the photo was taken.

Dehydrating apples worked out remarkably well. I'm gonna get more just for that purpose. :woohoo:

Day 11

This is the Cold Steel Twistmaster; Cold Steel’s USA-made version of the Opinel, apparently.

The 4 3/4” blade is Cold Steel’s Carbon V.  This puts it about on par with an Opinel No. 12 in terms of size.

Unlike a modern Opinel, the lock ring can’t be used to secure the blade in the closed position.  In the open position, however, the lock ring can be rotated either direction to lock the blade (also unlike an Opinel).

The handle is plastic.  Zytel maybe, but feels solid anyway and has a nice texture.

There is a small amount of vertical blade play when the knife is locked open, but I don’t think it’s enough to have any impact in use.  There is no horizontal blade play.

I haven’t carried this one yet.  I’m not opposed to carrying it, just not quite sure what niche it might fill.

One I've never heard of! :hatsoff:

Day 13

I didn't need to use a knife for food prep today, so let's show my big ol' honkin' fish knife. The blade measures about 4.375 inches (just over 111mm).

[ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]

I've never been able to precisely pin down who manufactured it for Sears or when it was sold (likely in or before 1973). And I thought it only appropriate that I photograph it with some fishing tackle. :)

Day 12

This is the Fox Knives Bravado.

The recurved blade is just over 4” of N690Co.  It features dual thumb studs, but is also easy to wrist flick open.

The pocket clip is serviceable.  Handles are drilled and tapped for RH or LH carry, but tip up only.

The scalloped Ti handle slabs are visually stunning, tactilely interesting, and probably among my favorite handles on any knife I own.

I do carry and use this one.  The only drawback, IMO, is that at 6.6 oz you won’t forget you are carrying it.

What purpose do the screws on the frame lock serve? And the titanium looks good. If I get around to doing (or, more likely, having someone else do) my planned bladeless SAK mod, it will likely have titanium scales.

Day 14

Today is a second day of no kitchen duty. Instead, the Garberg dealt appropriately with some paracord.

What purpose do the screws on the frame lock serve?
These screws attach a roughly L-shaped piece of hardened steel to the inside of the locking arm.

One leg of the “L” provides a hardened surface at the point where the lock actually engages the blade.  This results in a lock that will last much longer, as opposed to allowing the hardened blade to contact a much softer material like Ti or aluminum (which would wear faster).

The other leg of the “L” is an over travel stop, preventing the locking arm from being pushed too far in the unlock direction.

This is a common feature on modern frame locks, though it is often held by a single screw as on the pair of knives below…
