Don't forget the 130mm models! The thought of picking up one of those is in the very back of my mind.

Woah woah, are there 130mm alox models? Or do you mean like this thing?

That's precisely what I was getting at. :tu: Victorinox (in what I consider a somewhat odd move) also started putting the annual limited colors on the Hunter Pro in 2021.

Hello AloxAddicts,
This being my first 30-day challenge, I have a few queries that might be trivial, but would surely appreciate any help.

1. I assume we are not require to post a new Alox model each day? I don't have anything close to 30..
2. Do the pictures have to be of the Alox being used? Or can I post my mint-in-box safe queens as well?
3. I understand any and all Alox models are allowed I.e. from 58mm to 130mm?

Appreciate pointers/tips or anything else I should keep in mind for my first attempt at the 30-day challenge!!

I certainly wouldn't want do something and then say D'oh! as Homer would.

Zeno,

Hi Zeno,
Use one Alox or as many as you want.  One photo per day.  Usage is preferred.  Just a nice non usage photo is quite okay as well.  Any size Alox.  You might want to look at one of the 30 day challenge threads and see how others are doing things.  Post a number with your comments and photo each day.... Day 1, Day 2, etc.  Members who live in Australia, NZ, Japan, etc.  generally post earlier than everyone else.  Not a problem.  Best wishes.  G

I’ll echo Gary’s suggestion about usage. Action shots are great. I love seeing how different implements on different models are used.

Some of us also keep a running tab of tools used in a single model challenge. I think some folks have kept track of different models used in a category challenge like this one.

Last year there were a lot of neat older alox models some users and some safe queens we were excited to see.

I think I'm going to use my red Soldier. I like this thing a lot even though the tools scrape a bit and I'm pretty sure there's rust on the liners :ahhh. As an aside, does anyone have any recommendations on how to sharpen the cap lifter thing?

I assume you mean the wire stripping edge.  If you are not sure how to sharpen it, then maybe you should leave it alone.  It would be a shame to gotch up something on the nice SAK.  Especially when you are not likely to use the wire stripper anyway.  Best wishes.  G

Does it need sharpened? I don’t have any of those models (I wish I did ) but I don’t think I’ve seen any that look as sharp as the electrician blade scraper. Maybe I’m wrong?

What year is that? A 62-64 range?

I think it needs to be sharpened a bit, yes. It isn't sharp at all, really, more like the edge on a 91mm/93mm awl/reamer. This one is a 1965. Perhaps Gary is right though about it not requiring sharpening. May be best to follow the 'if it ain't broke don't fix it' apothegm for now.

If I had a sharpened cap lifter that had gone dull, I'd entrust that job to someone who knows what they are doing. I'd just goof it up.

I have sharpened the reamer on my 108mm several times.  That would work for a wire stripper all by itself.  One of the great awl/reamers on a SAK.
I used a 91mm Camper saw on some green limbs the other day.  Not nearly as good as the GAK saw.  I have stripped wire with the combo tool on the same 108mm.  Have to watch that you don't punch a hole in your thumb with the can opener hook or one of the saw teeth.
One of these days I might start a thread with some of the ugliest sharpening jobs on a SAK.  There have been some really bad sharpening jobs.  Friend Aztec showed a monumentally bad one on a nice old Wenger just the other day.  Best wishes.  G

I'm really on the fence about this year's limited edition color. We'll see if it grows on me. Meanwhile...

Day 1

It is worth noting that some of the SAKs I will be showing are safe queens/backups. Those will be shown on the usual plank, with a prop. The prop could be a Swiss Army Knights poker chip, a Micro Machine, a radio set, maybe a Corgi Mini, or who knows what else?

[ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]

This Bantam is a carrier, though. My love for the Alox Bantam has been previously expressed hereabouts, probably to the point of being ad nauseum. If you've never carried one, I strongly suggest a slip or similar such. While their slim form is very unobtrusive and sleek, they can easily sink to the bottom of a pocket or (worse) shimmy and wriggle their way out of it.

[ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]

This one came from DLT Trading. If awl goes well, I'll be ordering red ones from DLT Trading and some from Knife Center over the course of the challenge.

I don’t carry this one very often, but I will for this challenge!
