Day1  Let's go!!!

Lots of Alox shenanigans happening here!  I'll be carrying the limited edition Pioneer X today.  Thinking of taking it apart and adding that saw layer, acid etching with a brass wash.  Make my own limited edition Farmer X.  Should I do it?  >:D

Day 1/30: Alox Solo Starts the Journey!

There's no simpler way to kick off this 30-day project than with the single-blade wonder, the Alox Solo.

I especially love its symmetrical main blade, a departure from other Alox models that have an asymmetrical blade to make room for an awl.

Today, I put my Alox Solo to good use by slicing up some veggies for a delicious sandwich. It handled the task perfectly!

Side note: I've heard of some Alox Solo variations with an asymmetrical blade. Anyone have the inside scoop?

I used the awl/reamer on mine to open the very stubborn aluminium(?) seal on a new bottle of nicotine lozenges. I've got five weeks without a cigarette on Monday.

Looks like an awesome challenge, but I’m in for the Flashlight challenge.  Who knows, I might just have to do both despite only one counting towards a badge.

Here is a pic of a Farmer X on morning coffee making duty, taken before I knew the challenge was even going on.

Day 01:

I switched from last month’s Explorer to my Pioneer X for this month’s challenge. As always, the excellent Victorinox scissors are my most-used tool on any SAK. I trimmed plants in the garden today.

Annoyingly, the fingernail notch is on the wrong side of the Pioneer X scissors. I’m seriously considering disassembling it and replacing the scissors with a set from a donor 91mm SAK.
Current SAKs: Explorer, SwissChamp, Handyman (modded), Climber, Super Tinker, Tinker, Woodsman (modded), Electrician, Pioneer, SwissTool, Executive, Ambassador, Champion Plus
Current Leatherman tools: PST, Original Wave, Wave, Wave+, Blast, Bond, Curl, Style PS, Micra

I'm pretty sure the topic has been discussed before. You might try a search for "crinked" (that's the correct term for a blade that's slightly bent to clear another blade or tool).

I've got five weeks without a cigarette on Monday.
Congratulations! Today is seven weeks for me...

I got used to the oddly placed nail nick in time. But I do agree that it should be standardized.

What a great Day 1, y'awl!

Day 1 Bonus

I got a couple more bottles of Estrella Jalisco. The goal is to compare and contrast the combo tool and dedicated openers.

The combo tool handled the bottle cap, no problem. We'll see if the dedicated cap lifter does better.

Day 1:

I’m in. At least for now. I’ve got a vacation mid-month, so we’ll see how well I stick with the challenge.

Today was my daughters’ dance recital, so no real use. We took my wife’s van, so my set of keys for that has the recent berry red alox classic (not the 2018 version). Plus my EDC 2018 berry pioneer was in my pocket as awlways.

Day 1: I’m starting off the challenge with my favorite knife, the Alox Woodchipper. I used the main blade today to open up a new package in the mail, containing a beautiful Japanese incense bowl.

The symmetrical blade is perfect! I wish mine was the same… here is an example of the “crinked” one that FarmerX mentioned.

Interesting thumb-stud mod... 👆

Day 2

A spot of impromptu pruning with the old cross Farmer.

I bought it new in 1997, as a broke university student. It rode daily in my pocket, and also accompanied me on several epic multi-day hiking trips and outdoor adventures during my early and late 20's. This was before the concept of "every day carry", or internet forums! Victorinox changed the logo a few years later. Does anyone know exactly when this change occurred?

The wear is honest use. My amateur attempts at sharpening freehand and later with a Lansky were a bit too aggressive and chewed up the blade over the years, but is still razor sharp and everything is still in pretty good nick. I stopped carrying it when I got married and received a silver Wenger SI Soldier as a wedding gift from my dear wife. It will feature here eventually...

Thanks for this update.. a comparable picture puts things in perspective.

I' prefer the symmetric blade on solo, but wouldn't mind the crinked blade if Vic adds the Awl to it!!

Day 2:

Using my old Pioneer X that I have modded.  This tool goes thru several variations. Haha

Sometimes I remove the blade and awl, and just use it with openers and scissors. Usually do that then carry with a dedicated knife.

Today, it is helping open up the head on my Dyson vacuum, to do some cleaning.

I don’t believe that blade has been crinked. It looks like a blade that has been ground specifically to accommodate an opposing tool, as opposed to a symmetrical blade that was bent (crinked) to fit another tool.

Day 2:

I’ve been working outside today, trimming branches and bushes in the yard. A small stick got sucked into the inner workings of my mini-chainsaw, so I had to use the awl to pry it out of the compartment.

Day 02:

I've been putting my SAKs and MTs to a slightly grisly use over the past week, which continued today. My backyard has been invaded by venomous caterpillars called Autumn webworms, and they like to eat my plants.  :ahhh

I've discovered that the most expedient way to kill them is to simply cut them in half with SAK scissors or crush them with MT pliers. They are covered in hairs that are venomous (according to my research), so picking them up by hand isn't an option. The scissor blades provide enough grip on them to remove them from my plants before I bisect them.

Don't worry, I always wash the scissors before I fold them back up (to avoid contaminating the other tools).
