What in the world is going on here?

Does this person have the worst luck or is there something more sinister afoot?

On youtube I see a lot of  USMC camp knives with broken springs that leads me to believe it’s a common fault with those, but often they are decades old.
But this is ridiculous.

I think he is correct in the assessment of the spring getting improperly heat treated. Maybe the level of heat treat works when the pull is less then a 9-10, but blows out under the higher stress.

I recently posted about some older Bokers that I found 2 examples of a spring breaking just like the ones in the video. Once I had them taken apart my inspection revealed that the parts did not completely “mesh” in the way SAKs and other knives do, and due to this there was a lot of internal stress built in.

In contrast I worked with two different older solingen made pruning knives that had bear trap pulls 9-10, and their springs were surviving, despite one also not having great fit between the blade and the spring.

I had a brand new CASE #75 large stockman that I broke one of the back springs on.  I guess it was bad heat treatment also.

CASE took care of it, no questions asked.

I'm also guessing it was a bad heat treatment.

As for those Camillus U.S. military knives...it's sad to say, but those were not exactly the finest things to come out of that factory. Broken springs are shockingly common with them.

To have one back spring break is unfortunate.
To have two, that’s unlucky.  But he has had four or five break on Arthur wright knives and one on a Michael May.  That is plain crazy, if he is not breaking them through some sort of misuse, how you would even do so I don’t know. Surely this would be commonplace  and well known so much so the internet would be awash with disgruntled owners.

I have a demo with a busted spring. I think it should be allowed through security at places. There's no way I'm getting the blade out of that thing.
