*** The Dean 51 Traditional Challenge 2024 ***
on: June 15, 2024, 01:51:42 PM
Time to get a thread started for this years challenge   :tu:

In honor of our friend and brother Dean51 we do an annual 30 day Traditional challenge in July.   :salute:

Dean passed away on Monday, January 13, 2020,  following a courageous battle with cancer.

We miss you buddy    :salute:

• Carry a Traditional pocket knife every day from 01 July through 30 July
• Post a photo of your daily carry every day.
-- Please label your official daily post with either the date or challenge day, e.g. "Day 01".
• Please post a comment or two about how you used your knife, or why your traditional needed to be augmented by some fancy new multitool thingy.
• Traditionals can be switched up during the challenge, but for the GEC or Case badge you must one every day. You can carry more than one traditional knife brand in addition to those brands and still get the badge.
• No SAK's allowed in the Challenge or pictures

This year there is talk of a scout or camp knife challenge so if we get a few people for that we will create a new badge. You can also carry another knife  in addition to the Scout knife.

Hope you will take a moment to remember Dean and join in!

I’m thinking about possibly doing the Case sub-challenge this year, but we’ll see.

It was my impression  the SCOUT CHALLENGE was to run within the mid thread the “Dean 51”.

Just as the GEC and CASE sub categories have  :dunno:

You are correct,,, not sure where my wording went astray. I was just adding a link into this thread in case there were others like me who missed it at first.

Well I took a chance on the big auction site and purchased a Camillus Scout, so I reckon I'm in for the Scout pattern sub-challenge. Hopefully it arrives and has a good strong snap to the main blade. Fingers crossed.

I've got a ton on traditional, a few are coming next week. I think I'll incorporate them in the MTO Anniversary challenge.

Thank you Farmer X🤪.   Read the reviews not awl RRs are made the same.  The Marbles unit caught my eye. Rounded out my cart. 🔥

I hope to utilize my Scouts in the MTO Anniversary thread.  I already have the Anniversary and Dean51 Traditional Badges.

I know they're basically the same brand, but I like the Marbles scouts a bit better than the RR ones. I can't get any pics for comparison before the challenge starts, unfortunately.

No worry, a FedEx package arrived this morning, with some goodies.
[ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]

I went by the reviews and ordered 4 knives, 2 were in my cart. The Cattle Knife and  A Green Bone Equal End model (on the left side)

[ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]

The two SCOUT KINIVES are on the right😁

And yes. The blades are identical and the frames are too!

The difference is the scales and bolsters along with tang stamps and the blade etching on the Marbles.

The first two on the left are Marbles branded, and are top notch. F&F, W&T are A+.  Scales are great. The green has backspring of 8 on the clip. The Spey is 6.5
The Cattle both are a solid 6.

The RR’s Tiger scales are different and attractive. The Marble’s scales are traditional yet equally pretty.

I also, forgot, the bails on both Scouts are light weight, not sure I would trust to retain the knife outside a pocket or knapsack.  Better safe and slip them in a pocket. JMHO!0
If I start and end the day above ground, it is a good day!

Hope yours is as good!

PS: Thank you Farmer X for the nudge and reminder of the lower RR prices, otherwise my wallet would fuller and cart would yet be waiting🤪🙃🥲

Ugh,,,,

I got an email saying my Scout was delivered so I was kinda stoked when I got home. However, it turned out the seller got labels mixed up and my knife was shipped to a fella in Virginia, and I got this big ol bullet that unscrews from the bottom to stash stuff in.

So,,,, unless I find a Scout at the flea market, I will be changing my plans.
