Day 3.

Case 6344 "medium" Stockman.  Verges on a small pattern knife IMO.  I can't say I've ever fallen in love with the "as ground" finish on the blades nor the synthetic material for the covers. They feel cheap compared to Case's usual Delrin.  However I'm always going to like the idea of a pen blade on a Stockman.

The 44 pattern is just another Stockman modified to be unique.
The scales appear to be the Bakelite material and agree the synthetic or Delrin makes a better cover.
The 18 pattern is a better  style imho. And the 47 is a still better size.
The SPEY blade can do about everything a Pen Blade can do, like trim pencils!

If I start and end the day above ground, it is a good day!

Hope yours is as good!

They will be eaten, believe me. I can ill afford to waste food.
The little stove is awesome! What is it?
It is a Firebox Nano.  I’ve had it for several years and absolutely love it.  It folds flat into the case that doubles as an ash pan.

30 odd Scouts in 30 odd days: Day 3

While I think Marbles is generally nicer than their sister company, Rough Ryder does make some interesting pieces, like this scout with extra old school can opener.

[ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]

AFAIK, this is the oldest style dedicated can opener you can find on a pocket knife, already obsolete by the early 20th century (Victorinox was already on the lobster claw in 1890, as are most WWI era scouts I've seen).

It is a nice rough and tumble blade for stuff like breaking down boxes.

[ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]

But it's slow and awkward on cans. While I'm sure I could improve some with more practice, give me a nice claw or half moon any day.

[ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]

After making the initial puncture (straight down with an awl like motion) the nub rests on the outer rim and it cuts "up" from the inside. Leaves a real nasty edge, and not very comfortable. Also requires a decent amount of care/practice to actually get the whole outside of the lid and not veer in, making it harder to get out your peaches.

Still rocking these two. I'm enjoying the camp knife. It's actually the only one I own. I think I'll probably grab another one.

This is a dangerous challenge to do because y'awl are posting a lot of real nice knives that I might have to look into.

Nice write-up buddy.  :salute:

Yeah, they're definitely a step down later designs.  Mostly because there is nothing that anchors you to the rim and so you have to carefully aim each cut.  The same is true of the British Army WWII "Clasp" knife.  Looks like it should engage the rim but actually doesn't.

DAY 4

French laguiole frog knife, believe it or not, this is a traditional design, dating back to 16th Century (or so I was told).... unusual but works very well, very hard to find now (even in France....I have looked).

This was bought 20 years ago in central France, along the agricultural belt....lovely place
