Challenge in a challenge:

Post in the actual day of the week thread as well as here. This will also bump some of those threads and maybe get newer members to participate in that didn't know of them.   :tu:

Day 2: Farmer Friday! This particular Farmer is well traveled. It’s been to the US (of course) Canada, Germany, Austria, and the Czech Republic.

I think posting to the affiliated Day of the Week thread in addition to its derivative the Rotation challenge is a good idea.  As soon as I can take some better photos, I will do some of that.  Best wishes.  G

Greetings awl  :salute:

I'm afraid I'm out

It seems that the powers that be have decided I've spent too much time at home and need to go and play in the sand again (or spend many hours waiting to do so)  ::)

I wish you awl the best with this challenge and I'll drop in when I can  :tu:

Stay safe, Surge!

Day 2: Four Layer Friday

Explorer Plus taking care of a tag inside my wife's shirt while we were out. I agree with Gary, the Hunstman is the 4 layer 91mm. I don't know why I carry it more than the Explorer, I definitely need a screwdriver more often than I do a saw in my day to day life.

Day 2
Black Oxide Friday
1660 Leek BO, got this as a promotional from Springfield Armory a few years back and somehow never carried it.

Today is its day to shine...or not, it is BO after all.
I used to be a lot of things, and someday will again.
But for now I'm just a lost jack of trades with neither mastery nor home. ~NoaIsumi

Four Layer Friday

Red Farmer X  (KnifeCenter SFO) and I checking out the view from the top of Mt. Washington.

This Farmer X normally rides in my hiking pack as a backup to whatever else I may be carrying.

Decided to use this month to give a second chance to SAKs I don't carry often.
Great idea! :tu:

Just when I was thinking that I wasn't going to do any challenges in August...
Good to have you along!

I found my Climber.
Glad to hear it turned up!

Another great day, y'awl! :2tu: And stay safe during your trip overseas, SurgeUK! :salute:

Day 2
Black Oxide Friday

I don't have many black oxide tools, but this Latshaw PocketWrench II fills the bill nicely. It could awlso work for Throwback Thursday. The quarter is not a throwback; it was minted this year.

Day 2: Four Layer Friday

My most carried and favorite SAK, the Explorer.

[ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]

My first SAK was a Huntsman that I “borrowed” from my younger brother. That’s somewhere still packed with other SAKs from the move I’ll get that out eventually.  I agree with Gary and and BPRoberts, and like BPR the Explorer fits my daily needs with the Philips over a wood saw.  I may be generalizing here but I think a lot of folks I know that aren’t enthusiasts think of a Spartan and Hunstman when they think of a SAK.  But I think they’d be better served by an Explorer.

I first learned about the Explorer as a plausible daily carry from this forum and watched some of the popular YouTube videos reviewing it.  It is nearly perfect for my EDC uses. When my wife said she might like a SAK to replace her folder, I showed her the Explorer and she said “yeah exactly that.”  It’s perfect for her too… except the small blade needs to be a nail file (I agree).

Out of all the 4 layer possibilities, I find the Explorer toolset makes the most sense for me and I use multiple implements daily.  For example, today I used:  Phillips on a couple cabinet doors to level; large blade on a lot of food prep; cap lifter to open a paint can, can opener on a tin of beans; small blade to open mail; scissors cut several things open; both toothpick and tweezers used; mag lens used by the kids to look at a bug; and even got the hook to pull tops off squeeze bottles for recycling.

It the Wenger Choke Tube Tool

https://www.sakwiki.com/tiki-index.php?page=Wenger+Choke+Tube+Tool

Correct.  Since I don't own any chokes, I've never had the opportunity to try it.  Though I imagine using the handle to twist the choke wouldn't be good for the liners or the pins.

Day  3
Spartan Saturday

Beans for breakfast.  L.L. Bean anyway.  This one is a 'Traverse'.  For some reason I never remember the name.  It looks black in some light but is really dark green.  I suppose those are stars in the background.  Yes, it is a Spartan.  Why would you have stars in a really dark green sky?  Maybe it is stars reflected in water that looks really dark green at night.  Water that you have to 'traverse'.  Best wishes.  G

Very cool!! As far as use goes, in my limited experience chokes arent tight enough to do damage to the knife unless you have been putting quite a few rounds through one without cleaning.

Day 3: Swisstool Saturday

The favorite Spirit XC (butter blade) for today.

Like the Explorer it is for me a nearly perfect multitool.    I will pair it with a Rally for lightweight carry.  Add a plain edge blade with a Alox Solo or Swiss Army 2 (pruner).  I recently carried it with just a Waiter which worked out well for the tools.  Or, combo a Midnite Minichamp or Alox Minichamp with a Waiter to complete the tool set with little to know overlap.

My most carried and favorite SAK, the Explorer.
After following the recent Explorer challenge, I'm much more appreciative of the ILP.

Day  3
Why would you have stars in a really dark green sky?  Maybe it is stars reflected in water that looks really dark green at night.  Water that you have to 'traverse'.
I freed that SAK from its package, which said the white specks on green were supposed to resemble an old-style pottery camp mug. But I like your theory better. :D

Making quick work of a dogfood bag.
I sure do open cat food bags with shocking regularity...

Day on the lake is perfect for Salt Saturday!
I wish I was on the lake! :like: About as close as I can get right now is the Detroit Riverwalk.

Great stuff for Day 3, y'awl! :2tu:

Day 3
Signal Saturday

This photo highlights things I like and dislike about the Signal. Being able to easily and cheaply customize it is a good thing. (The ferro rod and sharpening stone holders in this one were originally pinkish; new ones can be purchased fairly cheaply from Leatherman.) As for the bad...the saw can travel ~1/8" too far down into the handle, making it tricky to deploy. Leatherman could do well to put a stop in there.

Saturday is one of those days you are likely to see me repeat tools...unless I hand-fish a Spartan or two out of the Bay. :D

I have actually used the firesteel on the signal with some success believe it or not. It’s definitely not ideal. But it can work if you have something that catches a spark really well. My pocket clip broke off and leatherman sent me a new kne (which took some doing, by the way. They wanted me to send the whole tool back). Ever since installing the new one, I can’t get the tension right on the blade/clip.

Day 3: Swisstool Saturday

While many people will rightly point out that a heavier duty tool might be more useful if you need your multi to rebuild a steam engine from scratch, and that the price point is substantially higher than some of the competitors, the Spirit remains the PBMT that probably most fits the needs of most people day to day.  It was the first PBMT I actually liked using, after a series of frustrations with various Leathermans and some "just okay" Gerbers. While I have found a few others that I like, the Spirit is still my favorite.

It saw a fair amount of use around camp today, mostly the scissors. Opening boxes, fixed a nail that was snagging on stuff, trimming a bandaid...

Day 3 : Spartan Saturday

So I was starting to get annoyed/freakout because I couldn't find my Spartan.  Did I give it away in the GAW box?  Did I lose it somewhere?

Nope.  I had forgotten that I'd taken it out and put it on my desk so I could clean it up and sharpen it.

Day 4
See Through Sunday

Time to do another ABS plastic photo.  I started this Day of the Week thread because there wasn't much to post on Sunday for SAKs.  If you had a SwissChamp, you fit right in.  Ditto with some Leatherman.  I'm not really sure how many people really like the translucent SAKs.  Some people get them as a gift, or maybe that was just what was available for purchase.  I never liked them, but warmed up to their virtues later.  I think maybe they are my favorites now.
Best wishes.  G
