Leatherman Arc Donation draw
on: August 11, 2024, 04:03:13 PM
Thanks everyone for an amazing 18th anniversary, we appreciate you folks for being part of this community. We're going to be offering a new Leatherman Arc to one of our members via donation draw. The awesome guys at Leatherman have provided the Arc because they love this community. It's their way of giving back to the community. For those of you not familiar with the Arc, it's the companies flagship model.  It's based off of the FREE platform and it's the first multitool to feature a Magnacut blade.

How this works is you donate $10 towards the site and you're put in for the drawing. If you donate $20 then your entered in twice, and so on and so forth. People who've already donated this month are already enrolled in the drawing. The donation box is on the right hand side on the forum page and says make a donation. button on the right, the Donations tab or click THIS LINK This site wouldn't be possible without the support of our members.

One perhaps obvious question should be asked: those who donate throughout August 2024 are eligible. Is that correct?

I suspect that the goal for August will be met. That is a hell of a nice gesture from Leatherman! :hatsoff:

Well, here is some more science stuff for you then.

We have 38 entries for the Arc.  Not bad odds, right?  One in 38 seems pretty good for the most expensive, full production tool in history.   :tu:

I decided that the best way to pick a winner was to roll two 20 sided dice, and add up the total.  Obviously no one would be in the number 1 position (can't roll a 1 with two dice) and I figured if I rolled double 20's, I'd re-roll.  40 minus 2 is 38.  Not bad right?

I can't find my dice (floods last year plus other complications have scattered many of my belongings ) so I figured I would just go and pick up some more.  No big deal, right?

Oh wait, I have a better idea!

I have a 3D printer!  I'll just download a D20 stl from Thingiverse, print them off and use that.  Brilliant, because I can upscale them and make BIG D20's, should I come up with a decent enough way to film it all.

So I download a fancy D20, it prints in about an hour and.... my printer isn't the best for detail and it comes out looking like absolute crap.  Most of the numbers are unreadable.

No problem, I just download a cleaner D20 design.  I find one and it's HUGE, being about the size of a small orange- Clementines I think they call them.

Fire it into my printer and... estimated 8 hours to print one.   :ahhh

But it's 5:30 pm, no big deal, I'll set it to print, should be done around midnight, I'll start printing a second one in the morning when I get up.  I'm usually up before dawn, so it will still be early in the day by the time it's done.

The printer is still whirring away a few hours later when I go to bed and it's looking good- it's printing denser than I thought, likely for better balancing and making sure it's legitimately weighted, that's good.  I wake up around 2:30 for the same reason most of us probably do, and I can hear the machine still happily printing away, and that's no problem.  It's going longer than expected, but it usually takes longer, and I'm in bed, so no need to rush anyway, right?

I get up this morning and pull it off the printer, break away the supports and the die looks absolutely amazing!  I printed it in silver because that's what was in the printer at the time, and the numbers are nice and clear and.....

Oh smurf.

Every side says 20 on it.  This die will ALWAYS roll 20 because there's a 20 on every side.

Anyways, this long, rambling post is to distract you from the fact that it will now take much longer until I can do the draw because I have to start all over again!

This design had three files- one with normal numbering, one with all 20's and one with nothing and I chose the worst of the three.  Now I have to start all over again.

In the words of TV stations everywhere:
