By the way, can we get the rules for this spelled out a bit more explicitly? The invitation says "30 days using only the MiniChamp", but does that mean "no other multitools or edged tools on your person" or just "no other SAKs"?

Usually rules says that you technically can carry other MT or edged tools but you must primarly use tool that challenge is (in this case MiniChamp) and you can use other tools if tool fails to do task.

Idea of these challenges is to push your tool in challenge (MiniChamp) to limits so you can see how far you can go with it.
Offcourse if you know that tool (MiniChamp) is hazardous or otherwise dangerous to use in job, you shouldnt then try to use it, but you should mention it on post why you couldnt use tool for job.

I'm still on the fence about doing this challenge again.  I wrote a longer comment but decided it might start an argument and deleted it.   Best wishes.  G

Not sure where to post this:

I’m considering entering and was browsing eBay for a cheap minichamp and came across this:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/146092102773

Check out the second pic, it looks like there’s a tang stamp on the coke spoon. I’ve never seen that before.

I could swear I've seen photos of, or at least heard of, pharmaceutical spatulas that bear tang stamps. Kinda interesting, but the seller and I are pretty far apart on the price.

Yeah, the price was a definite no for me.  I wonder if they’ve sold a knife before with no blade and stamped the spoons for it? Who knows.

It would be kind of fun to have a stamped spoon for a mod.

Well, I guess I should’ve checked Sakwiki first! The picture used for the implement has the tang stamp. Seems like it must be somewhat common. I’d love to know the story behind it.

And solved!

Again, a sakwiki search would’ve set me straight earlier.

Looks like there was a bladeless model calle the manicure and the coke spoon was stamped

https://sakwiki.com/tiki-index.php?page=Manicure

Also interesting that this predates any of the jetsetter blade less models.

Sorry for the digression, and back to the challenge thread!

Unfortunately, I'll be sitting this one out. I wasn't able to find a MiniChamp with the combo tool, I highly doubt I'll find one locally, and a lockable tool storage rig has moved up many places on the priority list. But I'll follow along and post a photo if I manage to get hold of a MiniChamp. I came up with an ideal use for the spatula thingie.

Day 1

Have I ever done a challenge with so few challengers?  I don't think so.  Looks like I get to kick it off.  How about a MiniChamp photo?
Not much Hall or Weening going on last night.  As far as I know.  Werecoyote didn't even crawl out of his lair and scream canine curses outside my window.  I heard one drive-by firecrackering, and that was it.  I will go down sometime this morning and make a munchie run.  Check to see if my mailbox survived the demonic so-called holiday.  Nobody braved my driveway, which is all to the good since I didn't have a single piece of candy on the property.  Best wishes.  Gary (IMR)

Day 1

My Minichamp is helping my buddy, Peter Parrot, in safeguarding my awakening juice until I can slug it down in between calls.

We had a good amount of Treaters last night but they retired earlier than anticipated.  I saw a couple of tricksters but we managed to keep them at bay.

I kind of forgot about this challenge.  I was considering joining, but have no minichamp.  I suppose I could order one from Amazon and start tomorrow, but I'll likely just cheer from the sidelines.  Looking forward to seeing the mighty mini put to the test!

Day 1:

I have 2 Minichamp models. Both are modern toolsets in cellidor as the Midnight Minichamp and Alox.

[ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]

I’ll likely switch them around and talk about the pros and cons of both.  I’ll start by stating the main pro and con for me.

The main pro to the midnight model is pen and light. Both are super helpful if you’re trying to go light.  The primary con is lack of scale tools. I really use the tweezers and toothpick a lot. I couldn’t justify the regular MC model just having the one slot with pen.  Might have to pull in the Waiter or something as a backup…

The Alox model lacking scale tools is fine as a compliment tool. I typically carry a single AAA flashlight and a pokka or space pen, unless I have the midnite MC.  The Alox compliments a celidor SAK with the scale tools.

This isn’t starting well for me I’m already off on a negative oh no

I swapped the scales on my wife's Minichamp as she always carry's a pen and she has a purple flashlight to match the scales on the Minichamp.

(Image removed from quote.)

I’ve considered doing this and may make the switch for the scale tools.  How did you remove the pen and LED scales without damaging them?  I always do the hot water method but I’ve definitely damaged the scales at the pin attachment when not softening them.

I use the same hot water treatment as seen in Felix Immler's video but I let mine sit for about 2 minutes.

I then start prying at one end with the knife from another 58mm.  I get as close as I can to the pin and start prying with steady force.  Then I move over to the other pin and do the same.  If it's being difficult, I'll soak it for another two minutes.

I've been able to reuse a few scales by doing the above.  You might still leave little slivers of cellidor behind but in my experience it's never been enough to make the scale unusable.

The first time I tried pulling scales off I didn't leave it in the hot water long enough and I ended up marring the pin attachment which made the scale fit a bit loose when I tried to reuse it.

May the best of your past, be the worst of your future.

I'm awlso going to be observing from the rear. Picking up a new MiniChamp remains a priority, but I don't know where exactly it landed on the list. I have a potentially great use for it. And a single AAA flashlight might be a great addition to my work tools.

Y'awl did a great job kicking it off! :tu:

Day 1: surprisingly not much real use today! Maybe it will get used before the night is over.

This is my only minichamp. I have had it for a short time, but have found it to be extremely useful for its size so far.

Day 1

Just a Pic of my only Minichamp. I am determined to find a use for the cuticle pusher thing this month. Will see if I am successful. I might have some make up days as I am moving house across states sometime later this month and might be out of pocket for brief periods of time.

Saw some classic glass bottled sodas at Home Depot while picking up some electrical supplies tonight and couldn't resist. The combo bottle opener on the 58mm knives is such a neat little design.

Day 2

It sure is dark outside.  And quiet.  I think I will welcome the return of standard time this year.  Breakfast with cinnamon toast.  Simple stuff.  Put some butter on one side of the bread.  Sprinkle on some sugar and finish with some cinnamon.  Brown it under the broiler.  The butter soaks and spreads and the cinnamon sinks down into the melted sugar.  Yummers.  A Chinese lady told me they made the same thing with canned biscuits in a restaurant she used to own.
MiniChamp gathered around for the finished confection and brought a Classic friend.  A little light outside now.  Either my eyes got used to the gloom, or I write very slowly.  Best wishes.  G
