Day 30

Just giving the blade a quick hone before putting it back in the desk, in the top left drawer.

Thanks to Barry for hosting this challenge.  It was fun trying to get by with this keychain multi-tool.  This challenge was the first time it was used this much.  As such, I have learned a few things.  All the tools on it have been useful, even the tiny Phillips.  The pliers I'm not sure about.

The were useful but maybe I was expecting too much for their size.   I felt like I couldn't grip tight enough with them.  Perhaps it was because I couldn't get enough purchase on them but I'm not sure.  I also didn't like that they would tend to pop open because of the button release.  A rubber band around the head and handle helped solve that issue.  Thanks to Gary for the idea.

That being said, they were useful but perhaps not for heavy duty stuff.  :D

However, thanks to you fine folks, I have become interested in the NexTool line, specifically the Mini Sailor S11 or The Mini Sailor Scissors.  I like what the Mini Flagship can do, but it seems like it would be too heavy as a keychain carry for me.

Special shout-out to Gary for making it work without a knife.  Very impressive!  :tu:

To gra_farmer, good people are always welcome stateside.

DAY 30, a little late.  After 30 days, I'm not a fan of keychain pliers.  In my past photo is my keychain, on which I carry a Vic Rambler.  The tools on the Rambler all do their jobs better than the PS4.  The Swiss+Tech pliers are worse than the PS4, but the Philips screwdriver is better, at the cost of not having a knife.  I find a PST, Skeletool, or similar MT and the Rambler to be a great combo.  I think I'll use the PS4 as the basis for an Altoids tin tool kit.

Akways fun, and I really enjoyed your pics and uses!

What's the point of having a 30 day challenge in months with 31 days?

I closed out day 30 with my much loved PowerPint... Well today I've returned my other KCPs to a carabineer with some of my other keychain doodads.

What's the point of having a 30 day challenge in months with 31 days?
~

My take on it is to have a day to chill and prepare for the next adventure.

February is the tough month to do a challenge, two additional days beyond the month, especially if a MARCH challenge is of interest.

And, even after completing a 30 day, I have observed and  understand the habit of sharing, and seen members post a +1, +2, even 3,4,5 then fade.

Nothing wrong there at awl😎
If I start and end the day above ground, it is a good day!

Hope yours is as good!

The free carry day at the end of the month is fun. I've kind of settled into a PST 2 and a small-mid Spyderco (Delica or Para3) as my default on those days, but sometimes I just go basic and break out a slippy.

Day 30

For all the smurf I gave them, the tiny plyers never actually let me down. Like when I needed something to squish this paperclip to stick in my headphone jack and use as an antenna at the drive in (we wanted to sit outside and forgot the radio we usually bring).

The Nextools all performed pretty well. The two main (bladed) Mini Sailor variants both had solid light duty tool sets. Nothing fancy, but they all got the job done for basic around the office/at home work. I wouldn't want them as my only tools when I was out camping or for a big fix it project, but they live in your pocket comfortably and are only $20. The "main" scissors are the best scissors I've ever seen on a tool this size, and one of the few that can come close to the legendary Victorinox scissors. If you want a small, scissors-focused tool, this is the choice. To be fair, the small folding scissors are awlso among the best in that style I've ever seen on a tool, Nextool just knows how to do scissors.

The Mini Flagship is a bit bulkier, but you get awlmost full sized scissors with your full sized pliers, and longer drivers, which is nice. It's actually a bit lighter than the Sailor (but wider). I liked the file on the Sailor better, but I think I'd probably pick this one overall if I wanted a tool in this style for EDC.

Special shout out to the Mini Sailor Lite. While the rest of the line are all good, there's nothing that'd make me particularly recommend them over a Powerpint, Dime, etc. But with Leatherman retiring the Style, I don't think there are currently any "name brand" TSA safe mini-plier tools. For $20 you get pliers, drivers, bottle opener, (good) scissors, and a sim card poker. It went through about a dozen security checkpoints with me on a trip and never got a second look. And for $20, it's cheap enough that I wouldn't be too broken up over it. I'd risk taking something like the Vic bladeless Companion somewhere like a ballpark where I can probably stash it if security wants to make a stink about it, but for the TSA or something, I'd rather the cheaper tool. Not sure how much I'll use the other two, but this one has earned its niche in my rotation.

Thanks for hosting, Barry! I'll see some of you next month in SAK-A-LIKE land.

I might buy one of those if I knew what they were - you know, just because.

Edit - found one on eBay, NIB, for "only" $100.00.   :ahhh

Are they handy to have in a desk or on your side for light duty?  Absolutely, but not at that price.  I saw one pop up for about $12 - $15 on Fleabay about a month or two ago.  I'd pick one up at that price for smiles and grin.

My Rambler never left the keychain, due to sentimental value.

I’ve really been considering the Mini Sailor Lite for when knives aren’t allowed.

My deepest apologies everyone. I misread the Keychain Badge details.  I'm going to get a badge for us for this challenge by humbly going to a Mod for help

I'll let you all know here.

This was Barry's info on the Keychain Badge.  I don't know if he tried to get it, or not.  I applied for the Bladeless Multitool Badge and got it.  I planned on the 30 Day Off-Brand as a back up.   Best wishes.  G

I was using a service called Moleliminator, that would come out once a week to set and remove traps.  It works, but a few week later the problem would return in part because we live next to a wooded area.  So I decided to buy traps and take care of it myself.

You know, like Jeremiah Johnson.  Exactly like him.

I've never been one to read instructions, so I did put in for it.  I have not received it, because I didn't do what was in the instructions.     It's not as though I need more badges, but it is cool to be able to see how many I've done (minus the repeats).
