How do I carry one extra bit?

I have a Leatherman Wave+ that I absolutely love and could gush about for days.  I'd really like a glass breaker though, so I bought one of breaker bits that came from a Skeletool XR.  Now I have a quandary.  The Phillips bit is super handy too, and I'd really like to carry both. 

Does anyone have any clever ideas for how to carry one extra bit for the wave+?

You could buy the bit kit from Leatherman and carry that with your wave in a sheath.

I have heard a few folks online have used a small neodymium magnet to hold an extra bit somewhere...just not sure if that would work on the Wave. Just a thought.

Does the bit kit fit in the standard sheath, or would I need a second sheath to hold bits?

Depends on which standard sheath you have :think: most will accommodate 1 of the bit cards but there are a few that don't have the little elastic band built in :dunno: :D

You could hunt down a Charge ALX or XTi. They have two bit drivers, so you always have two bits on board. Or just get a bit driver, and install it in your Wave Plus.
I've seen mods which allow bits to be stored on the sides of tools, but I cannot remember if people have done them to the Wave. I remember seeing them on ST300s.
Or you could just slip extra bits in your wallet's coin pocket or something.

Yeah, it's really strange that LM has made a variety of 4" nylon sheaths that all look the same, but have _slightly_ different dimensions. Most have an elastic pocket behind the main tool area where you can fit a single bit card. So then you could buy a bitkit set and replace one of the bits you don't need with the glass breaker and carry it that way.

Just something to look up. The glass breaker may not be safe to use on the Wave since the locking bit holder folds in and out. With the Skeletool the bit holder is fixed so that during hard impact it won’t fold in accidentally.

No experience on this just something I came across somewhere on the Internet.

I modded my Charge specifically to solve this problem as at the time I was using both the phillips and hex bits constantly. I've gone back to standard config with a sheet of my most used bits as the Charge now lives on my bike but I would always be on the look out for a better solution, including for a future Curl. The skeletool spoiled me, the extra bit storage was a very elegant use of space and much appreciated.

That extra bit holder is great  :like:.

But just in case, here's another tip to carry an extra bit.

Try to find one of the old style nylon Leatherman sheaths, these have a "hidden" pocket underneath the velcro patch that can easily hold a couple of bits (or other stuff).

You might have to get a bit (pun intended) creative with a piece of cardboard,  or stick the bit to a piece of ductape, since getting it out of the hidden pocket can be hard (you could always flip it up-side down and it will fall out, but that's not really convenient now is it?).

That's very good to know.  I have a pull-a-part junkyard near me; I should go see the manager and ask if they'll let me try it out.  The last/only time I broke a car window I was shocked how much force it took.  I was wailing on it with a hand hammer/hatchet and it would not break under repeated blows.  I had to pry the window frame to break it.

Update:  I missed a serious bug in this design.  It sticks up higher than the blade and prevents the pliers from closing.   :oops:  I had to break it off to fix my sister's oven.  I'm going to tweak it and reprint it, hopefully this week.

I need some help though.  Does anyone have the dimensions of a Swiss Army Knife Toothpick?  As part of the redesign I'm going to add a couple of slots to fit them so I can carry a toothpick and one of these firestarters.

You’ve done more than I ever did in trialing glass breaking 👍

From what I understand how a proper glass breaker works it should be easier due to the carbide composition and smaller point.

Also they recommend that you break the glass on a corner (forgot where exactly or which car side) which seems to make it less effort. I’m sure we have MTO members who are EMTs or LEOs that can advise better.

Most folks try in the middle. What you want is to attack it where the window goes into the frame...so along the edges works best.

Success!  I still don't have a bit holder design I like, but I do have a toothpick now.
