I didn't save a life, but I feel pretty good about it anyway

Megan and I were running out to pick up supper this evening, as as we were driving through our neighborhood I spotted a few people on the sidewalk.  One was lying on the ground and the others were crouching around her.

I immediately pulled over and ran across the road to check on them- three young ladies were out for a walk when they spotted a senior fall on the sidewalk.  The senior lady had blood coming from her forehead.

I informed them that I was first aid trained and I had a first aid kit and everyone seemed quite happy to hear that- I don't think the three young ladies really knew what to do.  I ran back to the car, grabbed my first aid kit and told Megan to call 911, because no one else had.

I pulled out some gauze and tried to stem the flow of blood from the senior's forehead and cheek, and checked her for a concussion.  Fortunately it wasn't serious, just some scrapes.  The young ladies helped me engage the senior in conversation to make sure she was awake and alert, and one of them held the gauze to the senior's forehead while I ran back to the car to get some wet wipes- something I always keep in the car.

The poor senior was covered in her own blood- it was all over her clothes and hands, because faces are crazy bleeding spots.

The ambulance was there in excellent time, well under ten minutes and they picked her up and took her away for more help than Megan and I (and the three younger ladies) could give at the side of the road.

It wasn't a life threatening accident, but I am still glad we were there to help.

My suggestion to everyone is to get first aid training, or watch a bunch of YT videos on the subject and carry a first aid kit whenever possible.  The person you help could be a stranger, a loved one or anyone in between- and it could be useful for someone else if you are the one in need of help.

Stay safe out there everyone!

Oh, and to clarify, Megan had already failed 911 and was waiting to see if someone else was or had already called.

She didn’t need me to tell her to call, she just didn’t want to double up on calls unnecessarily.

We make a great team when it comes to helping people who have had accidents- we’ve done it quite often!

Thanks guys.

There have been a couple of times that we haven't stopped when there were people who seemed competent handling things- someone on the phone, someone applying pressure, whatever.  I didn't see any of that this time so naturally we got involved.

The three young ladies were definitely well meaning, but I think quite out of their element.  Hopefully they will have felt helpless enough to decide to do something about it and get some training.
