Day 16:

Did a little comparison. Most knives I carry are anywhere from 3.25-4" closed--except 58mms (as they weigh nothing). Thus, the Voyager is huge in comparison. Still pretty lightweight.

Day 17:

Hadn't been doing much knife stuff lately--just a ton of rearranging.

Not today, however. This time, the Voyager, and not a Classic SD stayed in my shorts.

Day 24

Got a real measurement on the MUK today. ~10" total, ~5.5" blade by the AKTI system. Goes to show the importance of having a standard, I think you could hypothetically measure it as anywhere between 5 and 6 inches depending on your approach.

The hot weather has sapped my appetite.  I have fallen back to simulated Ritz crackers and cheese.  Might need to look at some more weed wackers this morning.  Best wishes.  G

:iagree:
An objective standard is the only way to get reproducibility.

As an aside, blade length measurements should be purely academic or for fun (like this challenge).  Blade length restrictions are one of those things that make no sense.

I think butterfly laws are my pick for least sensible knife laws. Unless you're going to ban all OHO, it's not any easier (probably harder) to open quickly than a lot of other mechanisms, and very secure from a safety perspective. A liner lock might not catch, you might accidentally hit the mechanism on some kinds of locks. If you hand is around the handle, the buttefly will not close without breaking in half, and that's not even counting the catch most have at the tail end.

Day 24

Back to carrying the Case. No use today. Debating carrying this as my folder next month, it's certainly sturdy enough, but awlso thinking something a little smaller might be nice. Speaking of the above, I am getting used to carrying a larger non-locking blade.

I have been thinking much the same about next month’s challenge, i.e. debating carrying a 65 pattern (which I really like in hand/in use), but strongly considering something that isn’t quite so heavy in pocket.

Whatever you decide, yours looks like an excellent example of the breed.

Day 25

Went by the power equipment shop early yestiddy.  Looks at the Wackos, Husky Farmers, and Steal models.  Picked up a poorly illustrated catalog.  Might have to see if some neighbors have a spare weed wacker that they would part with for a small price.  Or would accept a pocketknife or two in trade?  I would like an electric one actually, but they want you to buy the machine.  Then.... after you swallow hard over the price, you learn you also have to buy a battery.  And a charger.  No esta incluido.  Carramba.
95F and got a little dehydrogenated Tuesday, I think.  It doesn't usually get that hot here in the mountains.  No A/C of course.  I think I saw a notice that friend Reamer has put the new Big Blades award in the available list.  I need to look at that.  Unless I just imagined it.  I would think that the members who were in the challenge last year should be eligible to apply for award, right?  They are really just asking for it a little late.
Best wishes.  G

I just located the new Big Blades Badge.  It is on page 7.  Thanks again to Reamer Punch for his work on the award.  By the way, since I was in the Stihl dealer's place yestiddy, I happened to see the Stihl knives.  They used to have what looked like a big sodbuster every year.  A black coated blade with an orange handle.  German made.  The outdoor workers thought a lot of them and bought them for users.  $8 at one point.  They would get in a shipment of them once a year and they immediately sold out.  That's over with.  They had a gas station sort of knife with orange Stihl advertising now.  $11 for a teeny Chinese nothing with a one-hand opening hole in the big blade.  Also, there was a display of similarly priced Stihl multi-tools.  Keychain sized cheapest sort of worthless trash.
Still haven't decided whether to sign on to a challenge next month.  Hmmm.  Best wishes.  G

Speaking of cutting down trees, I saw two older women yesterday in the Power Equipment shop.  The saleslady was trying to sell them a gas powered chain saw.  One woman said, "I couldn't lift that."  The saleslady said it only weighs 9 pounds and 7 ounces, and handed it to her.  Neither woman could have gotten up on the floor by themselves if they had fallen.  Overweight.  Mid to late 70s.  Only outdoor activity they had done for years was feeding the birds.  Not active people and talked like they had an eye-opener before they left home.
Friend Nate had exactly what they needed.  A Sloop, or Sloom, or whatever you call it.  It does look like a nice sturdy knife.  I looked it up.  Not too expensive either.  I like the red handle.  Best wishes.  G

Before I forget again. Here is a quick pic of today’s carry. Continuing on with the ZT today and paring in one of my faithful Charges.

Nate, Hope camp is going well. Let us know if your boys will be earning their Tote N Chip card. I remember it was a big deal when my boys earned theirs.

Wait a minute.  Old Doc IMR will take a look and see.  Where are my doctor glasses.....?   Here they are.  Now.... Yes.   There seems to be an excess of Sharparific Maximus.  We will send in a sample for testing.  Be sure to check back in with my nurse about tomorrow for results.  This is most important .... have you noticed any secondary symptoms?  Such as the distinctive frowny face exhibited by your wife?  That would be bad, and we might have to talk about the removal of S. Maximus build-up and some follow-up counselling and such.  Okay?  Fine.

Some nice knives there; I don’t see the problem.

P.S. I wanted to have a look at the Carothers, but it appeared to be out of stock.

Secondary symptoms are secondary edges.... :ahhh

The best part is that my loving wife is a blade enabler.... doesn't always approve, but would rather I told her....the Carothers was not cheap, about the going rate new, for a second hand knife, as things are always more expensive in the UK.

I sold a knife to part fund 1/3 of it, so that helped....a little

They sell out as soon as they drop, even as pre-order.  You need to be on blade forums, Nathan is the maker and a mod on there.

I do like it a lot, for me I wouldn't go out of my way to buy another, but pleased I have this one.....I am a Steel nerd, it's the scientist in me, I am fascinated in materials steels, wood, etc, the more unusual the better.......my wife knows that my interests are her and the hobby in tools (I make things and use all sorts of tools, all the time), so the wife is content.

Good to know, thanks!

I no longer participate in the “game” of trying to get knives that sell out as soon as they “drop”.  I figure there are other knives out there that are just as good, and can be had on demand with significantly less frustration and hassle.

Voyager in the woods…

It's that kind of work where the Voyager excels. I hate having fixed blades/multitools on my belt dragging through brush thickets, as they hang up on everything (not to mention the hand rail  on the UTV bench seat gets items on my belt every time). The Voyager provides a decently large blade in a fairly lightweight frame that clips to the inside of a pocket.

Day 19:

I have been cleaning out a garage apartment for a few years now. Place is a total mess, and had loads of junk that needed to go decades ago. It was never lived in--just used as a storage building. I'm throwing the crap out, and making a hobby area out of it.

Back when I first started doing it heavily (at least a year or two ago), I'd somehow lost my Benchmade Mini Griptillian (bought secondhand from a member here--edge was thinned and bushings polished--making it better than stock) and my original LED Maglite Solitaire at least a year, maybe two years ago. For about 4-5 years, the Mini Griptillian was my go-to.

After making some room behind a dresser, I found the two laying together.  The biggest surprise--the Duracell (aka leaks a lot) battery (expiration date of 2029, so I'm guessing at least last year was when it was put in the light) was still good, and hadn't leaked one bit.

They turn up on bushcraft USA, worth a look, I do recommend the blade if you can get it for a reasonable price

Looking at my tools, and in the hope of a week rough camping at some point soon. The below is the likely trio of tools needed, minus a saw.

I am still learning with the Carothers so torn between these to be on my belt

Personally, I would go with the lightest weight option for belt carry.  I doubt you’ll see much real difference in actual use, unless you’re planning to chop with it.

I find a hatchet or small axe to be a valuable camping tool.  This is my current favorite:
