Timex Ironman Collecting
on: April 20, 2025, 08:05:06 PM
I currently only have one at the moment, a new Ironman, but does anyone here collect the mighty Ironman?  I'd love to see them!   Seeing some pics has taken me back memory lane!

I haven't had an Iron Man since the very early days of the two button design on the front.  Man I loved those watches.

My father treated himself to one shortly after they came out, and immediately felt bad about spending the money on himself.  Dad always felt bad (and still does) about spending money on himself, but I am glad he did.  He ended up being so happy with the watch that my brother and I found identical Iron Man watches under the tree that Christmas.

Of course, there has always been a "manly" contest in our house, where my father, brother and I always competed to see who was the toughest, strongest, smartest... you get the picture.  It's a friendly thing, and no one ever really suffers anything more than a slightly bruised ego every now and then.

One night around the supper table we had the usual discussion about who was the toughest, and Dad said that he was the REAL Iron Man, and that our watches weren't as good because a REAL MAN wasn't wearing them.  Or something, I don't recall exactly what was said, but I do recall that I responded with something about how my watch was the real Iron Man watch and my brother and father's watches were really Rubber Maid.

I scored big that night, and now, almost 40 years later if you mention Rubbermaid watches to my father he starts laughing.

I have had a few Iron Man watches over the years, although I don't currently have one.  Even so, they will always be special to me, so I am looking forward to seeing anyone else's collection!

I always loved that kind of competition Def!  The Rubber Maid one is great
They're a solid watch.  It's been years so I'm looking forward to seeing everyone's soon too.

Guess what rabbit hole I just went down   I found an early 90s one at a good price.  It's going to need a new band but that's not hard to do.

That is awesome!

After I eventually destroyed one of those (and a few other watches) I started into G Shocks around '93 or '94.  It was the only watch that could stand up to the absolute stupid smurf I used to do.  Given how much time I spent in the Emergency Room in those days it's no surprise that I broke watches right left and center!   :ahhh

Every now and then I think about getting another one, but my brother, father and I are all pretty well glued to our smart watches these days that it would be a bit of a waste.

But that doesn't stop me from going down that rabbit hole from time to time as well!

I don’t have one anymore, but I loved my Ironman watches.  I love the simplicity and utility.

Noah got me into G Shocks about 10 years ago and I've never looked back.  They're as indestructible as any watch can be.  Like Sherry, I definitely missed the simplicity of the Ironmans.  Even this runner's model is so easy to maneuver around.  That, and nostalgia :D

I currently only have one at the moment, a new Ironman, but does anyone here collect the mighty Ironman?  I'd love to see them!   Seeing some pics has taken me back memory lane!

I own only one and have only ever owned two.

The first had to be close to an original 1984 release.  It traveled to Australia with me and survived a dive to 100 feet and multiple other dives to depths capped at 60 feet.

I just had a new battery put in the only one in my possession.  The horologist estimated it to be an early 1990s model.  Bracelet (I think that's generous to call it that) is original.  To the best of my recollection it is only the third battery I've put into it in 30+ years of ownership.

The local watch forum I post in wasn't that impressed by it (buncha Rolex, IWC and others on there) so I'm hoping it gets some love here:

Edit: I see I posted the picture in the G-shock thread as well.  Oops.  That was late at nigh and this fits here better anyway.

That's what mine looked like, if memory serves me correctly Buggs.  That watch just kept going and going.  It seems like the older batteries lasted forever!  I've been trying to figure out whatever happened to the one I had, and I honestly don't know

Edit: I just recalled mine was pre Indigo.

Ironmans and G Shocks are always welcome here!  Thanks for posting yours!

Very nice looking watch Buggs!  I absolutely love that classic two button style!

All of mine were pre Indiglo as well, as by the time that came out I think I was into my first G Shock, a DW-5900 that did not have a light of any kind.

It always struck me as odd that it could tell me what year it was, but only if I woke up from my coma during the day....

I have to get Noah to set the time on my G Shocks

I'm surprised that Timex hasn't come out with a smart watch or something in that nostalgic configuration.  That would be awesome!

Me too!  I had forgotten about it, but I saw a couple of the Ironman Datalink watches.  It looks like it was the beginnings of that idea.

Great find Barry!
I could totally fall into the Ironman rabbit hole, but so far, I'm holding out.  Don't need another collection, but they sure are cool!  Congrats.
Rest in peace ColoSwiss, you will always be remembered.

Thanks Lisa!  I've been looking on the online sales sites and that first one just got me!  I know how to read the date codes on them now.  It's a 5/94 model, with just the backlight.  The second one is going to be a user  :D

Aren't watches fun?!  I liked looking at your collection of G Shocks and it got me interested in picking up something besides the usual  :D
