Day 29

Obligatory Opinel photo.  One more day, then a one day break.  I'm about ready for a Daily Donut Challenge.  Might have to go out later and buy some.  You know the little, tiny kind with white powdery sugar all over them?  Comes in a little sack?  That's the kind.  Best wishes.  G

I was real happy when I found this until I realized that next month is pliers based and not a mini wrench.

Day 29

Doing a little bit of handle work on the Neo.6 today. I lightly sanded the handles last night and put two very light coats of polyurethane on. I will take some 0000 steel wool and buff the handles then apply some finish wax. If it doesn’t turn out the way I like I will sand it back and go the BLO route like I did on my Beech No. 8.

I was scrolling down to the photos, and saw the Neos.  First thought, was I didn't know they were so glossy.  Supposed to be waxed, or something.  Then I read the caption.  BLO means what?  Some sort of oil finish?  Are the blades sharpened down to the tip on these?   Best wishes.  G

Hi Gary, I applied poly last night after I did a mod on my handles. That is why they are so glossy at the moment. I will cut the gloss with some 0000 steel wool later today and then apply a paste wax. Depending on how that turns out. I may keep it or sand it back and apply Boiled Linseed Oil. I don’t particularly like the smell of BLO, so I am trying to avoid that.

Day 29

Kenwood TK-x80 Series 2-way Radios
The Kenwood TK-x80 series are business/commercial/public safety 2-way radios. They are single-band radios and come in VHF, UHF and 800/900 MHz versions. Pictured left to right are the TK-280 VHF, TK-380 UHF, TK-481 900 MHz.
The 800 MHz version is TK-480, but I don't have one of those because I don't have any operating privileges on 800 MHz.

I have a bucket full of the VHF and UHF versions because I have been able to get them very cheaply. I only have a couple of the 900 MHz ones because they are rarer and more expensive. All of mine are former business/industrial/public service radios, except for one of my TK-481s that I found NIB for a good price.

There are also mobile/base radios within this series: TK-780 VHF, TK-880 UHF, TK-980/981 800/900 MHz. I have some of those as well, but I figure the handheld versions are more relevant to this forum.

Here is what these radios can do for me. TK-280 VHF: 2 Meters ham radio (the most popular ham radio band in the world), MURS (five license-free channels that used to be licensed business band channels), marine VHF, railroad channels, weather channels. I program the latter two as receive-only so I cannot inadvertently transmit there.
TK-380 UHF: 70 cm ham band, GMRS.
TK-481: 900 MHz (aka 33cm) ham band.

Unlike a dedicated ham radio, these must be programmed via computer. They cannot be programmed in the field using just the controls on the radio. Most ham radios can be field programmed, but they aren't legal for use on the other radio services. These are legal for the other services, since they are designed for them. But they are also legal on the ham bands if one is licensed to use those bands.
These radios can store hundreds of channels, broken down into multiple banks. So I can have a separate channel bank for each radio service.
They also have the advantage of a fast scan. You can scan all channels in the radio, or just the channels in a single bank.

The one I am most likely to be carrying is the TK-280, VHF. Not only is 2M the most-used ham band, with multiple repeaters available almost anywhere you happen to be; but it also makes a great scanner for railroad, marine and some public service. And, the primary weather channels are on VHF as well.

I have been enjoying carrying it this month. This is my first modern traditional knife I have tried. I really like the Micarta and the full liners. The ball detent for the closed, half stop and full open has worked great. I also like the blade shape and the CPM154 blade steel. I recommend it if you are interested in the pattern. I would pick one up soon since they are now discontinued.

Great job everyone!  This is probably my favorite challenge, in that anything can be carried.  I've loved seeing all these different pics and how everyone uses them.
Gary, great job! This has been great!!

Day 28:

Did much more work in the basement, and finally got the first of the bags of trash unloaded at the dump.

Also finished up the projects I started yesterday. Jeep got its body and TPU tires, Unimog got its TPU tires.

Shore 95 hardness isn't exactly as soft as I'm used to with LEGO, diecast, or RC rubber tires. The grip is terrible. But, I've heard the softer the rubber, the harder it is to print. May try Shore 75 instead. I understand there's also some TPU specifically designed for making airless balls--I've been really wanting to print one.

Day 29

The Schrade 152OT, the Chinese made Sharpfinger I've been carrying the last couple of days along with my traditional knives of the day.  There are some things it's just easier or safer to do with a fixed blade knife.  As long as it is legal for me to carry them I might as well.  I would like to remind everyone that BPRoberts is hosting the EDC fixed blade challenge in October so there's still plenty of time to sign up. https://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,94128.0.html

Yes,  I'm bieng lazy...have a few Leatherman on a shelf

And that USA made Schrade hiding under the Surge was a gift from Gerleatherberman several years ago after I suffered through a 30d ToughTool group challenge with the lousy Taylor/China version. (I still have the note he sent with it even)
Thanks again :hatsoff:

Day 30

My backup stove for when the electricity goes down.  Ordinary green propane Coleman with a little rust.  The only watch I own that still works, an old Casio.  Usual No.8 Opinel.  I think I carried this one more than the No.9.
A few minutes of rain last night.  Enough to keep the grass from dying for a few days.  Everyone be sure to look through the Awards List and see if you qualify for some sort of badge.  Even if you already have the Anniversary Challenge green badge.  I am going to apply for the nice blue Opinel badge.  Hopefully everyone had some fun.
Best wishes.  Gary

DAY 30

Final day, and a strange challenge for me with the batman utility belt challenge.....what I learnt is that it's really difficult to carry more than two tool / items on the belt.

I carry normally a leatherman, and have done for years, no issues with any movement or day to day tasks, add another tool and it's difficult to get in and out of the car, or sit down....plus keeping the trousers up....there has been a few times this month that gravity and the belt carry has exposed my rear cheeks

For my finale picture, my pretty much ideal bushcraft 'batman' unity belt ( if batman was interested in bushcraft....maybe I was channelling Ray Mears really...), with new leather work that I made over the last few nights (some of it is still unfinished).

Coat carrier straps

Mini prybar, which I find really useful

Leather gloves hook, and a fire steel clip (fire steel hidden by gloves... typical), and a black homemade possibles pouch, that has a compass, water purification tablets, a folding bottle and plastic bags.

The mains tools, small outdoor axe, silky saw in pouch, leatherman mut in sheath and a Mark Jacobs pukko in 52100 steel

It's really not that bad to wear, but can only be worn as an over belt, as you have to be able to move tools around to get to them.

Many thanks to you all, it has been a fun challenge, and cheers to Gary for pushing it along....with his enthusiasm and entertaining text  :hatsoff:

I'll try and post a picture of me wearing the belt carry in the picture....the nature of it, means that I need someone else to take the picture, so have to get the wife to do that...
