~~~ The Dean51 Traditional Challenge 2025 ~~~
on: June 10, 2025, 01:03:19 AM
Time to get a thread started for this years challenge   :tu:
In honor of our friend and brother Dean51 we do an annual 30 day Traditional challenge in July.   :salute:
Dean passed away on Monday, January 13, 2020,  following a courageous battle with cancer.
We miss you buddy    :salute:
• Carry a Traditional pocket knife every day from 01 July through 30 July
• Post a photo of your daily carry every day.
  -- Please label your official daily post with either the date or challenge day, e.g. "Day 01".
• Please post a comment or two about how you used your knife, or why your traditional needed to be augmented by some fancy new multitool thingy.
• Traditionals can be switched up during the challenge, but for the GEC or Case badge you must carry one every day. You can carry more than one traditional knife brand in addition to those brands and still get the badge.
• No SAK's or SAK-alikes allowed in the Challenge or pictures
Hope you will take a moment to remember Dean and join in!  :cheers:
So, when stated No SAKs, does that just mean Vic and Wenger, or include any similar type knives?
Ultimately, it’s Steve’s call.
But in past challenges, IIRC:
-If you had something like a Case Scout or GEC Johnny On the Spot that was truly a traditional pattern, then having a can opener or screwdriver or whatever didn’t count against it.
-If you had something like an Aitor or MKM Malga 6 (basically a SAK clone), it would run afoul of the “No SAKs” rule even though not made by Vic or Wenger.
So, basically no little “multi tools”?  Haha
Not necessarily…
If we define a multitool as any tool with at least two different designed functions, there are some traditional pocket knives that are also multitools.  Below are a few of mine.
Of course, there are also plenty of multitools that are not traditional pocket knives, and plenty of traditional pocket knives that are not multitools (due to having only knife blades).
If you’re unclear on what a traditional pocket knife is, I feel the concept is perhaps best understood inductively.  There are many fine examples in last year’s challenge (link provided earlier in this thread), as well as here:
https://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,68477.0.html
P.S.  If you want to participate but don’t have anything suitable, Rough Ryder makes a number of inexpensive traditional patterns that are excellent value for the money.
Testing.
ETA: Just getting ready for the Challenge by posting from my phone, since that is how I will probably be doing it for at least part of the month.
About this 6265, blame IMR4198! I kept seeing his 6265 in the June Giants challenge, and just had to have one. But I wanted an older, carbon steel version so I found this 1965-1969 and bought it. The skinner blade has a chipped tip, but that just got me a good price for an otherwise good condition knife.
Lots of life left in that one!
A lot of people think the 65 pattern is just too big, but it’s a very handy knife.
:iagree: :like:
Other makers copied the design, too. My renewed interest in the pattern also gave me the impetus to drag out my old Schrade 25OT and clean it up a bit. That one might show up in the Challenge as well.
I'm finishing my fifth challenge of the year and I got a collector badge as well.  I was going to drop a couple of photos in the anniversary thread and relax in July.  The I read this thread...and I'm in!
I've got a few traditional knives that rarely see the light of day.   :nanadance:
