What have I got?
on: July 30, 2025, 12:24:21 PM
I picked up these two at a flea market last weekend.  I know nothing about slipjoints, but I do know how to use Google and I found this:

The Providence Cutlery Co. was started in 1916 by Dominick and Anthony Paolantonio. The business was in Providence R.I. By 1925 they had sold the company to Nicholas Amoroso. They are known for making shell handled knives.

In 1926 three of the Paolantonio brothers, Dominick, Antonio (Anthony?) and Fortunato, started the Colonial Knife Company in Providence, R.I. The company is known for making shell handled knives just like their previously owned company is.

I guess that makes it a pre-Colonial Colonial knife?

I have no info on the white one, but it has been suggested that it could be from the Ideal Tool Company?

Any info anyone has on these would be appreciated!

Huh, interesting! I have something similar, the one I found while working in Philly, my father-in-law and I were upgrading the plumbing in a basement before the house could get rented and as I was running a pipe it fell out of joists, I was like “what the”? I stopped and looked it over and noticed it said KaBar, so of course the first thing that comes to mind is a military field knife. Sure enough a few years ago I wrote them and they said it’s theirs and from old production, I forget where the other knife I have came from, idk why but both yellow?

Second knife that MP showed looks like an old Hammer Brand.  Imitation pearl celluloid.  I have one exactly like it, with a busted blade.  Best wishes.  G

That photo I sent was from a 1941 Imperial catalog.  These were very inexpensive knives, but the steel seemed good.  I always found them to take a good edge.  There are fifty blue million different variations of these things.  Best wishes.  G

From Goins encyclopedia of cutlery markings

Colonial knives have good carbon steel blades. They made some decent Barlows.

Just so you know, the Ideal Tool Co. made reloading equipment.  John Barlow took over the Winchester reloading tool manufacture.  Famous for plier type reloading implements that had bullet casting blocks and could do all reloading functions.  Black powder days.  Fill up the case with black and maybe put a wad or two on top before seating a greased lead bullet.  Bought by Marlin about 1910.  Later taken over by Lyman.  Lyman tong tool is similar without the casting blocks.  Best wishes.  G

I believe that is a different company than the knife maker.

Premier, if I'm not mistaken, was a Canadian importer. Most of what I've seen has been of German origin--but didn't know they imported Colonials.

I recall seeing Premiere on some knives in the late 80's or so, but I haven't seen them in a long, long time.

I can't say I know much about them.
