I've got no one to blame but myself (apparently)
on: September 10, 2025, 12:45:00 PM
I bought a new watch yesterday, specifically a new Seiko Chronograph.

Naturally I didn't need another watch, especially as my smart watch is the one I wear 99% of the time, but there's another factor at play here.

You see, my coworker, who I will only refer to as "Hugh" (largely because that's actually his name) has been buying a lot of watches lately, and I've been drooling over some of his finds.

So, when I spotted this Seiko I jumped on it, before I remembered that I am only interested in automatic Seikos.

Naturally, I used a few words the forum won't let me use when talking to Hugh and I told him that it was his fault I bought it and he is a bad influence.

Well, it turns out that it wasn't Hugh's fault.  It's mine.

A couple of weeks ago we were talking about watches and the next day I wore my Seiko Orange Monster, and he was so interested in it that it is what inspired him to start grabbing watches, so I guess what goes around comes around!   :ahhh

For those keeping track, I'm still ahead of the game as a couple of weeks ago Inky and I may or may not have inspired my good buddy Abe Elias (yes, THAT Abe Elias!) into needing to get a G Shock.   >:D

And if course, long time forum members will know that this is not the first time I have been blamed for something.....  https://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,93765.0.html#msg2524812

But, getting on to the new watch itself, it's a bit smaller than most of my watches, as you see in the photo above comparing it to my GA-100 Dark Knight and the Luminox Blackout, which I had out to get new batteries for.

There are a few good scratches in the crystal and on the bracelet but overall it's in good shape.  As I've never had a Seiko Chrono before I wasn't entirely sure how it worked, but it didn't take long.  One button starts and stops the Chrono functions and the other resets it.  Pretty easy.

It is on the original Seiko bracelet which has been sized too small for even my thin wrists, and I didn't get any other links for it so if I want to wear it I'm going to have to get a new bracelet or strap for it.

I don't know if I'm going to keep it or not, so I haven't started looking at strap options yet.  It is a very nice watch, it just isn't my style, and to be honest, I wear my watches all too rarely to be buying more!

But this one was too pretty to pass up.   :D

Thanks Barry!

It's a really cool watch, just not really my thing.  I don't use a stopwatch very often so it's not really much benefit to me, but it is cool to watch the teeny red hands racing around!

Watches are one of those things that are good to collect if you are into them, because they are useful in additional to being collectable.

You know - like MTs and SAKs.   :ahhh

I was heavily into watch hoarding - until I bought a Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 Classic, which was the cheapest smart watch I could find at the time.  Since then, I have never had any other watch on my wrist.  It sorta of ruined me and ended my watch-hoarding experience.

So if you can wear a smart watch, but still be into the aesthetics of a traditional watch, then cheers to you.

I pretty much wear my Apple watch to work, and my more traditional watches on weekends.  While it is supposed to be water resistant, I don’t like risking it swimming, boating, camping, etc., and I don’t have to worry about charging the traditionals.

That's a sharp-looking watch! :tu:

And it may be worth noting that Def mentioned the Seiko Monster to me not too long ago. That led me to discover the Night Monster Black, which instantly became my dream watch. I doubt that's gonna change anytime soon.

Yeah I thought so!

I told him that if he wants to sell it, let me know....

I could absolutely use another watch sitting and gathering dust!   :ahhh

Nice score. Can't go wrong with a Seiko!
I knew my wife was a keeper when she transitioned from calling it a knife thingy to a multi-tool.

That's my thinking, but I do prefer automatics!  I have enough watches that I have to change batteries in despite never being worn!   :ahhh

We're Studio Ghibli fans over here so I "might" have to look into finding one of those.   And I'm a watch fan but I try to keep them on the more affordable end because I'm too hard on my stuff.

No apology needed. If I am fortunate enough to acquire a Night Monster Black, it will almost certainly be the last watch I buy. They're that perfect.

The number of times I have heard that on watch forums. And thought similar myself. The next watch is the perfect one…until you have it.

Unfortunately that is true!

There is a saying about kayaks that could easily be applied to watches, multitools, SAKs, flashlights etc.

How many watches does a true watch enthusiast need?

One..... More....
