Your dream SAK
on: October 16, 2025, 07:05:10 PM
I’m sure this has been done before, but what the heck.

The question is whether you have in your mind a “perfect” SAK, that is not made and never has been?

For me, this  has changed with time. But what I want most of all is an Alox Cadet X with a smaller version of the 93mm awl instead of the nail file. Or put another way, an 84mm Pioneer X. A small package that would have everything I really want. If Victorinox made this I would get it in every colour they wanted to issue, until I had enough to decorate a Christmas tree. It’ll never happen, of course.

One thing that never seems to change, the perfect SAK is never one that exists.

I admire your WIT, posing such a question, I truly do!😉

In my advanced years, I have not found a single day to u fold as any that proceeded it.

I found myself when traveling for work, I had a truck full of my everyday heavy duty tools on the shelves, hammer drill, right angle grinder, impact driver, sawl-saw, and cordless hd drill/driver.   And even with awl the attachments, awl ways found myself searching for that one bit or blade that would have done the job better.  After dinner for entertain I would walk the aisles of Lowe’s or HomeDepot searching.

Same with my carry kit, I knew what I had planned, and on my belt would be my daily selection, and in one pocket my edc, and the other that special tool for today only.   I found my self packing a variety of personal carry multitools numbering maybe 15 to 20, awl packed in a pouch inside the top inside decider of my suit case.  When it got to heavy I pair it down. And, then repeat the procedure in another four or five weeks.

At home I sort still outfit myself daily based on my intentions…

As for a SAK, I actually thought I had found my jewel, a MOUNTAINEER, the file, a chisel…

But its weight left it on the sideline, except for special days.

For me besides the blade, nail file, a corkscrew, a toothpick, and a AWL is my most utilized.

Of course a plier based MT is always within reach. In a should bag, on the unstable, in the kitchen junk drawer. 😉
If I start and end the day above ground, it is a good day!

Hope yours is as good!

An 84mm PX would be very appealing  :like:

After quite a few years of buying and trying many different SAKs I come back around to the same few, which luckily for me are all in production, so I think my perfect SAK is to carry two of them!

A PX and a Rambler, the only tools I feel I'm missing out on are the saw (so carry an FX sometimes), metal file (don't use it often away from home where I've full sized files) and corkscrew with mini driver

The Rambler gives me the T&T, small drivers and nail file. The PX a nice 93mm blade, awl etc

I don't go anywhere without the Rambler and really I could get away with just that 95% of the time, but I work in an office these days.
It was very different when i was a maintenance man some years back

That Alox Cadet X sounds like a model I would buy.  I would like it to have plus scales.

To make that Alox Cadet X a dream SAK would have scales with a reservoir in them so I could put some lip balm in them them and refill as needed.  That would eliminate one less thing in my pocket.
Rest in peace ColoSwiss, you will always be remembered.

Agreed with model 84mm PX.

Make it two version.
1) With Lock Blade
2) W/O Lock Blade..

Agreed with FB with plus scales alox..

P/S: make the pocket clip is reversible/ambi. If any..

I figure a lot of us here suffer from this disease. To the normal guy, if he has some tools that can just about get the job done, he's not going to think any more about it. To we happy few, the question of whether there is something that would have let us do it better, or easier, or that is handier to carry, will never go away.

You can be sure of finding three things in every forum, Whatsapp, Telegram or Facebook group that deals with SAKs:
1. Discussions on whether the Tinker or Spartan families are "the best", with the T-handle Phillips guys being more aggresive than the corkscrew guys.
2. Some lazy soul asking where to buy scales for his SAK tha has minimum pocket wear.
3. Endless discussions on the "perfect" SAK.

I can't think of a "perfect" SAK. Every day I want or think I'll need to carry a different model, based on liking and perceived needs. OK, something like an Alox Mountaineer with plus scales sounds good on paper, but wouldn't it be a bit heavy to carry on a bermuda shorts' pocket?

Now, if we're talking about dreams...
I'd love to get me a Model 1891 for the price of a Spartan, or a Climber from the '60s, with the bail and the LNF.

I concur, 90%. I would call it Bantam X, with blade, combo tool, and scissors. Needs a key ring. Slim, lightweight, not too big for keys, bridges the gap between Classic and Pioneer. I've been thinking about having that custom made, since I can't find scissors that fit and I don't have the skills to cut up a bigger pair.

I’m pretty happy with my pioneer and alox classic.

That said, I would be tempted by a cadet X. I also think the alox rambler should be a regular production item.

And this would be so easy for them to do. Who wouldn't want an Alox Rambler? Every person would want one, unless there was something wrong with them.

In Powernoodleworld, the Victorinox Yeoman was the apex of SAKdom.  It was thin in the pocket, but had everything necessary for righteous daily living: blade, real inline phillips driver, magnifier, scissors, pen, pin, etc.  And nothing not needed, except the always-pointless corkscrew.

Which, of course, is why Victorinox discontinued it.

Ha! I was waiting for the Yeoman to make an appearance!  For my money maybe the Scientist, Astronaut or Apprentice mak8ng a return would tick my boxes.

Or a Tardis Champion. It has all the functions of a Champion or Superchamp, but takes up the space of a Spartan.
There is no beginning,or ending, and for this we are thankful, cos now is hard enough to understand!

I have an Alumnus, Cadet X, and Yeoman, and I feel like one of those should be my dream SAK. They're all great to carry, but after trying dozens of different models from 2 layers to 8 layers in several sizes my actual favorite is a combination of the Pioneer and Executive. I'm currently doing the Spartan challenge though, and I am really loving it. I don't know that it could replace my Pioneer, but I am considering it.  :dunno:

About 5 years ago I got the green Cadet in with a lot of 5 or 6 SAKs, and as soon as I saw it I knew I had to use it for a Cadet X. I had been building customs for myself for a while but hadn't messed with Alox, so was I nervous going in. Slow and careful was the way, and I'm happy with how it turned out.

Forgot to mention I had been sitting on a crappy small Climber with good scissors for a while, waiting for this opportunity.

 :iagree:

My dream SAK that has not been made yet would essentially be a Dual Pro X, but with both blades sharing the same profile (i.e. the serrated blade not being shorter and curved). I hope that makes sense.

That's just a dream, though. For off-day carry in the suburbs, I consider an Adventurer, a Picknicker, or a Garant to be a perfect SAK.

Is there something wrong with me in thinking it's about personal preference?  ???

It's not for me cos I like having T&T on my 58mm. I'm also rather fond of the rosewood scales I put on my Rambler.  :tu:

My greatest frustration with the Swisschamp is that my most used tools are on the outside layers, making them awkward to use. Thus, my dream SAK is a SC with everything bar the blade & opener layers, so basically without a Spartans toolset (or a Climbers).

As for dream SAKs I think would like to see:

- A Yeoman, except I would replace the scissors with pliers.

- Starting with a Cybertool M, remove the scissors and opener layers, and replace the small blade with the combo tool.

Fieldmaster (Huntsman with a T Philip's instead of a cork screw) in Alox red with the backside and scale tools.  And maybe with the grey magnifying glass.  Which probably adds the inline Philips, so if it does, then I'd go back to the corkscrew, and...

Ah,  geeze

Main point is, I like the saw AND scissors on a basic frame.  I like Alox because it doesn't crack like collider when dropped

I am pretty happy with a combo of 84/85 single layer + 58 for scissors where Rambler, Manager etc is the most useful option.

I think I prefer this combo even to the mystical 84 double layer with scissors as I mostly use the scissors for tasks where I actually prefer the small size (nails etc.).
I like to have the scale tools, but it is enough to have it on only one of the combo knife so from this perspective Alox Rambler would be very welcome addition to the line up.

Then there definitely is something wrong with me. I see my 58mms as companion knives that bring toothpick, tweezers and scissors to larger, more "knifey" models (not necessarily SAKs that don't have either of them. That's why I modified my Rambler with 3D-printed scales that brought me the pen and pin as well. A 58mm without T&T simply would not bring enough to add to a sheepsfoot or a tacticool knife, for instance.

Who wouldn't want an Alox Rambler? Every person would want one, unless there was something wrong with them.

I had my dream sak made, yet then they came out with the FarmerX which was close but not perfect, I also took a compact swapped out the corkscrew with a Philips and added a saw and that pretty much did it but it wasn’t Alox, so no matter what there never perfect, well unless you have them custom made,,

Not so much a SAK
But a LM Juice sized Spirit with powerful blunt nose pliers  would do me
Failing that I’d like Explorer  with older grey mag layer and serrated main blade.
I don't claim to know it all, but what I do know is right.

Upgraded pliers, 91mm blade thick box opener replace small blade / combo tool

Most dream SAKs were easy mods. Knifeless and fish scalerless Swissdude, knifeless Alox Rambler with blade replaced with orange peeler, Yeoman

Making those dreams come true when you can just slim down existing models is relatively easy and definitely worth it
