Hacksmith's EDC Knife Multitool

This looks pretty cool IMO. The 91Gram weight is a killer feature. Yeah there's a lot of extra stuff that some people won't like but wanted to put this on the radar in case you guys haven't seen it yet.

Cool, thanks for sharing it.

At $200 or $250 a pop though, I doubt I’ll be acquiring one anytime soon.

I think it's priced okay considering they're manufacturing most in Canada and starting with 3 CNCs. The non proprietary 4mm bits really make an attractive carry. Wiha makes a 4mm hex phillips #2 i swear would take doors off their hinges.

Well, they are obviously having no problem raising funds.

But when a MT is 6-8 times the price of a Vic Climber, it becomes difficult for me to justify the purchase to myself.

I might have missed the part about Canada, but I heard him mention his manufacturers in China.

$250 for a Chinese-made tool seems too steep to me.  Still, it looks like an interesting multitool, and the primary thing keeping me from buying it is Kickstarter.  I have seen way too many Kickstarters fail to deliver, and there is no way to get a refund because Kickstarter doesn't guarantee delivery.  $250 is a steep gamble that it will be delivered.

I saw the video on these.
Gotta say that it seems to be an impressive tool but I simply can't justify the price, either.

I think more choice for us (of quality tools) is a good thing. It might not be for everybody, few things are, but for somebody that might be a good fit. Personally I hope there are enough of those somebodies to keep them going further and providing even more choices in the future.

Cool looking tool but I'm not sure I would've destroyed a SAK to prove a point.  😢

Maybe a SAK-A-Like but not a SAK.

Not familiar with the guy, but the Kickstarter reads like he's never carried a multi a day in his life. He acts like he invented the inline bit driver? SAK/LM wire strippers are too hard to use?  A protractor that only works in 15 degree increments? Half the tools require you to deploy your super steel blade to use? Missing basic, usable, tools like scissors?

This is a bit driver strapped to an overpriced knife, with just enough awkward tools to call it a multi for marketing.

I stumbled upon this marvel of engineering and cherry-picking, and saw a very interesting table of comparison between it and a generic Victorinox sak-alike. Well, let's go ahead and compare it to the "Big Red", as they call Victorinox. I will compare their knife to the Victorinox CyberTool. This seems to be an appropriate comparison. They seem to have omitted some key points, so I added a few lines at the bottom.

Original Table:

Asterisk denotes items that can be added aftermarket.

Now, do not get me wrong. I do like the design of the Hacksmith knife. It does seem like a cool edc tool. They have surpassed their kickstarter goal by millions, so it seems that it will probably be available at some point for us common folk. I just have some questions regarding their marketing. They have cherry-picked functions and tools to compare their tool to, and this seems misleading, and in some instances, it is plain wrong. Of course, the table they have on their kickstarter page has a generic sak-alike, and not a proper Victorinox. Really? This premium folding knife is being compared to arguably the worst pocket tool on the planet?

It’s an interesting project that obviously appeals to many. I don’t see it selling a lot in the UK other than to tool collectors. Even the non-locking version, whilst it may be legal carry, is the kind of thing I would not want to whip out in public here, particularly as it makes a loud attention-grabbing sound when the knife is opened and has a fairly aggressive blade shape. In these knife-paranoid times it just wouldn’t make sense to me. I would be more likely to carry a smaller and less alarming-looking knife that was actually illegal because locking, than I would this. If nobody sees it and thinks it’s a problem, it isn’t a problem. But a SAK, which is both legal and non-threatening to most, is your best option for public use here.

Those concerns aside, the tool does not really appeal to me. I am not one for bit drivers on MTs. If I want to be prepared to drive a bunch of different screws I’d rather have a dedicated bit driver or ratchet. Likewise the pen looks a poor substitute for a real pen. The fact that it has a protractor (of a kind) and bubble level is also not really useful for me, because if I am doing a job where I need those things I will have my tool bag with me, and the ones in there are better.

All that said, it is a lot of utility in a fairly compact and light form, and has undeniable cool factor. It’s good that it’s out there to be enjoyed by those whose needs it suits better.

That is a great bit! And makes a 4mm only bit driving setup a more practical proposition than it otherwise would be. I have several and have done a lot with them, they stand up really well.
