ATV / SSV / outdoor riding ?
on: January 14, 2026, 09:52:48 PM
I've searched the entire forum with "atv" or "ssv" keywords, but found pratically noting.

Maybe I've been wrong with the searching method, so please tell me if a thread is already existing about that :D

So this is an "outdoor" section, and as I'm reading "outdoor", I'm thinking ATV / SSV (and 4x4 as well).

My wife and I, are taking some very good pleasure to take a ride with my SSV Can-Am Maverick sport 1000R. Before that, I had an ATV Can-Am Outlander Max. ATV <> SSV regarding the feeling, the comfort, etc. :D

And I was wondering, is there someone here who's riding an ATV / SSV ? And if so, which one ?

I know that riding in the USA or Canada is not the same AT ALL with riding in France, but the pleasure itself should be the same (or similar).

So, if someone want to talk freely about this passion, you're sincerely welcome  :tu:

Fell free to participate, and, as someone often say's, "THANK YOU FOR YOUR MATTER ABOUT THIS MESSAGE"

We have a couple of lengthy threads about 4x4's, first about Jeeps and then about any 4x4's that are not Jeeps:

Jeep thread:  https://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,42613.0.html

Non Jeep thread:  https://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,51059.0.html

There are also some threads that show images of me riding ATV's or driving my father's Honda Pioneer 1000 around in the woods.  I have my own cabin in the woods now and getting our own little 4x4 (Maybe a Polaris RZR or similar) is on our list of priorities- you know, after indoor plumbing!   :ahhh

It may not be specifically what you are looking for, but that should be a start!

Not at all! It is very fitting to have a thread here as well!  Those threads are less about the adventure and talking about the equipment.

We could definitely use a thread dedicated to the activity of four wheeling!

I will post some of my photos shortly, and perhaps others will as well!

This is my father's Honda Pioneer the last time we took it out.  Mostly he uses it for yard work.  The rear of it is reconfigurable from a branch seat for three people to a cargo bed like a pickup truck.

When we visit we try to always make time to take it out into the woods and have a good time.

This is great !

I'd love to ride in the wild land of Canada  :woohoo:

But it's far away from France :/

This is my SSV, last time I took a ride with it :D

Oh wow!

That looks like you had a lot of fun!   :tu:

I don't know why but I never expected that to be a common hobby in France, but then I am currently in Portugal this week and drove past a hockey club, so I guess there is a lot I have to learn!

I do most of my off road adventuring in my Jeep, mostly because I don't have my own ATV at the moment.  I would hate to break any of my father's toys!

Yes, it was very funny  :tu:

It's not as common in France as in Canada or USA. The two best brand are american (Polaris), and (initially) Canadian (BRP Can-Am). Mine is a Can-Am :)

Never went in the portugal before, my wifr and I are going to make a trip in it, this year (gift by my wife, for my birthday  ). In a van, so we can visit a little the country.

I take my hollydays every year in spain, the ATV/SSV are much common and better accepted than in France.

In France, some people set traps in the forest to knock over and injure cycles, ATVs, motorcycles, etc. There have been deaths because of this.

You can guess what I think about those motherf*uckers...

Oh, I think I gave the answer

My father had a Can Am ATV prior to the Honda Pioneer, and he still has an old Arctic Cat ATV that he doesn't use and I may have to abscond with at some point when he isn't looking.....  >:D

Unfortunately as he lives 1500kms away, it's still a bit of effort and expense to steal it!

When you get to Portugal, visit Amaranth and the Duoro Valley.  You won't regret it.  But, as the details of my trip are already posted in The Break Room I won't bore you with them here!

As for the people setting those traps, I feel like that is a great opportunity to bring back a certain French invention that is very effective for dealing with ignorant people.

The nice thing is, if you catch someone doing that, you are probably very far from witnesses....   :D

Arctic cat is a good ATV brand too :tu:

Yes, 1500km A/R, it must be more expensive to take the trip (with a trailer) than buying one by yourself :D

Reading that, I'm thinking about a French invention, with a very sharpen and beveled blade, in a wooden frame

Am I looking at a very big ATV, a very small car, or both? :o

I will probably pick up a Douk-Douk one of these days. Will price them out a little later in the day.

Both :D

The Renault Supercing is a very simple and efficient car (hum... just as the Douk Douk. The French touch ?

I wanted it for my little collection, and my daughter offers me one today for christmas (YES, it's christmas today :D ).

I don't know the prices out of France.

Douk-Douks are pretty inexpensive in the States...about $30-35 if you get just the knife itself. I'm kinda drawn to those that come with the pouch and a small sharpening steel.

I am unfamiliar with the Supercing, but I'll look it up. Renault never gained much of a foothold in the States.

When I was in the USA (Ohio, 1994, during 3 monthes), I saw two versions of Renault vehicules : the Renault Alliance (which was, if I'm correct, the Renault R11), and the Renault Encore (Renault R9).

The supercinq is a pretty simple car. I fixed the cooling system with duct tape, and the heating system with a metal collar. 1,4l, nothing but the necessary to have (lights, turn signal, glass wiper, klaxon, and I even have a watch aboard. Deluxe version  :D

Oh yes, it's reming me something, "Le car".

The american market was not, 30 years ago, really open to the small cars. I remember I paid $1,16 gallon of gas, for me it was pratically nothing :D

Now maybe you're impacted by the chinese exportation of sh*tty electric cars ? :o

If I recall correctly, the price of a liter of gasoline in Europe is roughly what Americans pay for a gallon.

I haven't seen the first Chinese car yet.  Maybe they are more common somewhere else.  I understand some brands like Volvo are Chinese owned.  Gas (petrol) regular grade here is $2.69 per gallon as of Thursday where I live.  I once saw a video taken in the little shop where Douk Douk knives were made.  Interesting.  I would buy one if I saw a reasonably priced used one.  Until then, I am enjoying my Opinels.  Best wishes.  Gary

If I recall correctly, the price of a liter of gasoline in Europe is roughly what Americans pay for a gallon.

In France, it's €1.66 / liter (1,96 dollar). 1 gallon US = 3,78 liters (rounded)
3,78 X 1,96 = $7,40 for one gallon in France, if i'm correct.

That's why we DO see some chinese electric cars in our streets... Unfortunately....

Yes  :-\

In the middle of spring, my wife and I, with a few friends, are going to make a trip offroad, 124 miles to go (that will take the entire day), then on day to visit a little, and then, the return at home (124 miles again).

The "offroad" in France is not the same trip as the offroad in Canada or USA, as I see on youtube :D

But it's still great ;)
