Hold on Paulo!
on: February 04, 2026, 07:27:33 PM
Last week Portugal got hit pretty bad by Tropical Storm Kristin which caused a lot of flooding, damage and deaths.  Now a week later, Tropical Storm Leonardo seems to be closing in, threatening to hit them pretty hard again.

I hope Paulo, his parents and everyone else is okay and that Leonardo doesn't hit nearly as hard!  Hang in there!

Thanks, guys. Yup, pretty bad. The worst has been around the city of Leiria. Still lots of people without power, roads flooded, factories and houses damaged, cars turned upside down like toys.

We had gusts of wind of 200 km/h!

Kristin passed but now we have Leonardo and next week we're expecting Marta. It's a carrousel of tempests, non-stop.

Well I hope that you are okay and that your family is unaffected, and stays that way.

Seeing the level of devastation and trying to equate it with what we saw just a couple of weeks ago is crazy.

Stay safe indeed. Looks really bad.

We had floods last year. I was dealing with water in the basment of my fathers house. Stayed up for 32 hours straight. The next day I saw that we actually had it easy. Few km further down people practically had the damn river flowinhlg through their houses.

I won't excessively complain about 50 MPH gusts anymore. Stay safe out there, my friend!

Very unusual. So much so that we're having trouble trying to repair all the damages. Some places still don't have power, others are cut off, only the army has managed to go in and out to transport people/goods.

Some dams had to start unloading, because of the high water volume. They were letting out between 3.000m3 and 4.0003 PER SECOND! That's between 3.000.000 and 4.000.000 liters!

Yesterday and today, in Lisboa, we had very little rain and even some sun, but we're expecting the new storm, Marta, to hit later on, with more and heavier rain and strong winds. These storms have also hit Spain with great violence.

Yeah, remember Grant's pics from their trip to Portugal? THAT is what we call here bad weather. We have no words to describe these last (and maybe the upcoming) weeks.

Hang in there man.

I don't want to admit any guilt here, but we may or may not have taken a cobblestone from the street out front of our hotel.  I didn't realize it was the ne holding the dams together!   :ahhh

Seriously man, keep your head down and stay away from the danger areas- and make sure your parents do as well!

Dude, that was you?!

 :twak: :twak: :twak: :twak:

Seems things are calming down a bit. Still lots of rain, but less strong. Also windy, but less strong. In terms of temperature, it's been, in the words of Tom Waits, colder than a well-diggers ass. We've got (at least) another week of the same weather.

Occasionally, we've had some sun, for an hour or so. Happened during the weekend, probably the reason why the presidential election on Sunday didn't had a higher absenteeism level than usual.

  :salute:

So far, we've had Ingrid, Joseph, Kristin, Leonardo and Marta. One after the other, starting before the previous ended. Preparing for Nils, this Friday 13th (ominous, right?).

Thanks, guys. It seems to have passed on to Spain, now. Still cold and very cloudy, but no heavy rain. Many people still don't have power and communications are not fully restored. Lots of roads are destroyed and we've had some problems with landslides, after the rain stopped.

It's going to take a lot of time to get things back to normal, but we're quite resilient.

I can imagine. We had one day of rain, and no wind and the roads got destroyed badly. So three such weather events, and beeing even stronger... I do not envy you.  :ahhh
