Leatherman really likes that orange, and I agree with them. Great color!  :like:

Day 3

While I'll be carrying the Vulpis all month, I do have some other orange goodies. Like this Marbles Workman. It's a scout knife with a Phillips driver, which is a fine thing to have for stuff like wobbly stools.

Day 3

Doing some work in the garage today so I had to sharpen up my pencil.  Figured I might as well include my dirty orange work gloves.   :D

Day 4

This version of the MKM Malga 6 features orange G10 scales.

They are textured, in a way that vaguely reminds me of Vic 108mm scales.  Can’t decide if I like it or not.

Day 1 (late)

I have made a poor start to this challenge - zero for the first five days.  I’ll try to make up for it now with an excess of orange!

By coincidence I have a very similar Fox Vulpis knife to the one BP Roberts has shown, except mine is without the saw.

I figured that given the small size of these knives the saw may be too short to be of much practical use - would be interested to hear of BP R’s experience, though.

The can opener on this has a wicked sharp edge and point to it, making it a good package opener. Also suitable as an orange peeler.

Day 3 (late)

The scissors are what lets the Vulpis down as an EDC for me. They are not as bad as some, but not good enough to replace Vic scissors for me. I’m a heavy scissors user and fussy about them, so for others this may be less of an issue. The only scissors I have on any MT that I would fairly happily EDC instead of Vic ones are those of the Nextool Micro Sailor, which are similar to LM Micra scissors, but better.

Day 4 (late)

This little Olight is one of those where the body is magnetically attached to the tail, and it lights up when you pull it off. A convenient keychain option.

I’ve had prior versions of this which ate those little button batteries, which I hate. This model is much better as it’s rechargeable.

You just plug the doohickey on the back of it into a USB A socket.

Day 5

The Olight imini 2 in action:

It’s not a huge amount of light, and only one level, but a lot better than what you get from a phone. The convenience of it is being able to just grab it off your keys and you have light in your hand.

The picture was taken in daylight - which makes the output seem more feeble than it is in dark conditions.

Interesting knife! The Philllips looks quite small - like a size 0. Yet it seems to work OK with #2 screws?

As an owner of one of these knives (though not orange), my opinion is that this assessment is correct - while not badly executed, the saw is simply too short to be of practical value.  But interested to hear what others think.

I agree with this assessment.  I found they cut some materials OK, but really fell down when it came things like hair and small strings.  Which, for me, are exactly the things I expect scissors to cut.

That Phillips driver looks tiny - Almost too small for that stool screw?    :dunno:

PS - I like the look of the Vulpis - Interested to see how it goes this month.

Lots of similar comments, so here's my initial thoughts.

1. The Vulpis has (thus far) held up to everything I've asked of it. That's not to say I've tortured tested it, but it's driven a bunch of different screws, opened packages, etc. without me ever wishing it was bigger. I think it's worth remembering that it's about the same size as the venerable Executive, which tons of people have carried as their main or only knife for years (see our yearly Chuck Yaeger challenge). In fact, it's a bit "deeper" so you get a similar length, but more belly.

I have not used the saw yet, but I'm inclined to agree that it's probably not going to be worth it as a saw. I am wondering if it's worth it simply as a "rough" blade to muscle open stuff like cardboard, and leave the main blade clean and sharp for food. Will report back over the course of the month.

Overall, I think the 2 or 3 layer versions will probably show very competently as keychain knives. A bit bigger than 58s, and some tools you don't usually see at this size. The 58mm bottle opener is iffy, and the 74s don't have one at all (the orange peeler will do in a pinch.) Likewise, no can opener (though I haven't tested it yet). The 4 layer is a bit bulky for that, but worth considering for anyone who likes the 74, 84, or 85 frames. I will have to see how it crams into the 5th pocket on a pair of jeans. With Wenger gone and Vic cutting a ton of their line in those ranges, I'm glad to see someone filling the gap. My wife has a couple 91s and 93s, and says they're all to big for EDC. She grabs them if we're going camping, working on stuff around the house, etc. but not for a regular day at the office. She's happy enough with a 58. I a Vulpis could be a nice upgrade for someone with a similar use case. (But she'll probably carry her 58 until it literally falls apart, since it's got our wedding date engraved.) As awlways, I do miss the scale tools, but that's not a dealbreaker for most people. Price is higher, but if it can be "buy once, cry once" I think it's acceptable.

2. The Phillips on the Workman is pretty tiny. I will try to measure it (or at least compare with my bit set) at home and see if I can get a precise size. I'm going to guess #1. It did do fine on the stool, but I don't think you'd get anywhere on anything much larger. Definitely a "nice to have, but wouldn't want to rely on" tool.

Good write-up!
 :tu:

I have the four-layer version, and like you, initially thought one of the thinner versions might be a good keychain knife.  YMMV, but as I considered it further, I realized the following:

The #1 reason I carry a key chain knife/tool is for the scissors, and the Vulpis scissors aren’t on par with Vic scissors.

If the saw and scissors on the Vulpis aren’t worth having, then we’re down to the two-layer version.  But how does that compare to, say, a Vic Cadet?  The Cadet provides more tools at a lower price point.

In fact, I would say the only clear advantage for the Vulpis over the Cadet is the blade steel.  But then again, I don’t do much cutting with my key chain knife blade; I’m pretty much always carrying a larger knife as my main cutter.

Day 5

Of course, the main selling point of the Malga 6 vs. Vic SAKs is the M390 main blade.  And it does not disappoint; the blade alone is worth the price of admission.

Shown with a Vic Cybertool M for scale…
