Enjoy getting them online now. As this will soon be a thing of the past with Benchmade. They soon will be shipping only to brick and morter stores.

I thought it was just the full size griptilian that had the thumb hole. Mine has a thumb stud.

I used to come here a lot.

I guess so! Mine has the D2 blade, so I wasn't sure if that was a factor.

The thumb stud is good for flicking the blade open though :D

The Mini-Grip is a great knife and Benchmade does a great job with 440C. I have one I got years ago from Cabelas with the thumb stud, the blade is D2. They are a very good design in my opinion.

I don't have any D2 myself, but from what I have read it's great for edge retention, but can be brittle.

D2 is an awesome blade steel. The D2 mini griptillian is only sold at Cabela's I believe.

D2, holds an edge nicely, I don't have any problem sharpening it. But D2 can chip a little easier than 440C and 154CM.  Mine has a black teflon-type coating on it to aid in rust protection. Frankly, I like well done 440C and 154CM just fine. I doubt I would spend the extra money for D2 again if I did it over again. I'm just not a "super", "new and improved" steel guy.

The Mini-Grip is a very nice design, regardless of the steel used as long as the heat treat is done well.

My Mini-Grip is the same except I have the plain edge with no serrations. I also have a 940S which has 154CM and serrations, it's pretty nice as well. The blade is a little heavier out towards the tip so it opens without much of a flick.

It's the chipping that has put me off of D2 so far.

I'm sure that won't last long though.  :D

I have not chipped mine, thankfully. But I have read stories of guys cutting down cardboard boxes and hitting one of those huge copper staples. Now, I think probably any steel will chip if you hit one of those. But I try to cut stuff that a knife was designed to cut, like the cardboard, not the staples. Sooooo, I use a plier-based multi to remove those blade chipping staples.

Ben, D2 is fine, just slightly less forgiving if you hit something that a knife isn't supposed to cut anyhow. So don't let D2 put you off. :)

Not really sure about S30V. I think A2, D2 and M2 are pretty much what you would consider tool-steel and are slightly more brittle.

Here is some light reading from A.G Russell:

It's not a "problem" it is just slightly more prone to chipping than some other steels.  Like they guys have said, they haven't had any problems at all.  I have just been more attracted by other steels (well so far anyway  :D )

I've cut into normal sized staples accidentally with VG10 and that dulled the edge instantly (i.e. can now see reflection off the edge, but didn't chip. I think D2 should be fine too since staples are soft metal.

There have been many, many discussions about the best steels, just like there have been about the best sharpening techniques. It's all relative. My grandfather used a two sided crystolon sharpening stone and a smooth steel for all his knives which were mostly 1095 carbon steel. They were razor sharp and definately not toys. So, if it was good enough for him, it's good enough for me.

It's just me, but I don't sweat the steel anymore. My feeling is this, buy knives from reputable manufacturers who know how to properly heat treat their knives and you'll be fine. I mean seriously, we all really like SAK's and they do not use the latest-greatest-super-duper steel. But we like them because they work just fine for 99% of what we need to cut. So, if you like the "lowly" SAK steel, you'll be just fine with 420HC, 440C, 1095, etc. Most everything else is just more money and of questionable necessity and questionable value for the extra money spent. Do we really need the super steels to cut string, apples, cardboard, fish, etc?

Nice blade CG.  :tu:
Looks like the older version with the oval hole but a beauty,  love the sheepsfoot blade.
