Gaffer's tape is similar to Duct tape in that it's also a reinforce fabric tape. It was developed specifically for the film industry with a matte finish so it wouldn't reflect light. It also has a less tacky adhesive so it can be removed easily.
Duct tape is a generic name but comes in many different grades from common household to 100mph,even 1000mph grades which have super strong adhesives. Mil. spec duct tape is the best I've used.

I've found that gaff tape actually sticks better to porous surfaces such as brick and concrete.

Gorilla tape is great stuff, but I'd never be able to get the residue off my cables.
