Puma 6383 Buddy from 1972
on: December 25, 2009, 07:07:53 PM
Just wanted to showcase a recent acquisition, a Puma 6386 Buddy which according the it's number 83274 was manufactured in 1972.
The design seems to have been more or less inspired on Scandinavian blades, but because of the genuine Sambar Stag handle paired with nickel silver bolsters it still has that distinct Puma flavour.

My version seems to have never been used, but the reverse side of the blade shows some superficial scratches made by rivet heads on the inside of the sheath.

Beauty knife!  Much nicer shape than my old White Hunter!

Of course the White Hunter is pre-64 as it has no tang stamp.  Still be very careful with the old stag handles as they can deteriorate quite easily.

But that old White Hunter is still some serious knife in it's own right !
Love to see one of these ancient ones, as they are getting more scarce every year.
Problem with this model is the sharpening, as because of the geometry the edge thickens really fast (especially on the belly), and getting it sharp & keeping a nice appearance as well can be a real challenge.
I did a few of these for some oldfashioned hunters in my home town.

I maintain the stag on my Puma's with a little soft beeswax every couple of years which i brush in all the nooks and crannies of the handle.
Seems to keep them in shape, but it also helps that they only decorate my wall and get fondled now and then,

The hunters who actually use their Puma's swear by a little fat from a boar's belly, but they don't seem to mind the stench which comes up after some time, :D
