Artifact Or Wait For The Shard?
on: January 13, 2010, 07:07:42 PM
I saw a Gerber Artifact in an camping shop today and was tempted to buy. I resisted that temptation and thought best to consult Multitool.org  :D

So should I get the Artifact or hold out for the elusive Shard?

These should be available in February but who knows what that means for the UK

Perhaps I should buy the Artifact now and get the Shard as and when it is available as it will not be expensive  :tu:

Also I know the Artifact comes with three spare blades but can these blades be purchased from a craft shop or are they Artifact specific?

The Artifact has a built in retractable knife (very sharp), the shard doesn't.  Ask yourself two things?

1)  Do I need a knife on my keychain? (especially if you already carry another knife)
2)  If I need a knife am I willing to have a VERY sharp knife on my keychain?

I carried an Artifact for a few days and quite honestly it worried me to have such a dangerous instrument, that may inadvertently open in my pocket.

I have both and find them both useful. I carry a small Spider Man tool bag with me to do small repairs and to put together boxed items toys and furniture for friends and family. The Artifact is one of the tools i carry in it. I have an assortment of hobby blades that fit it. I find it very useful.

The shard is the way to go, but still a ripoff of Peter Atwood!  :D

There's also the "Is his legal EDC in the UK" question to ask!

(The answer no btw) ;)
I used to come here a lot.

I think the Atwood gear is fantastic but very exclusive to those with deep pockets  :D

I appreciate they are handmade but still appear over priced. Obviously I know nothing of what it takes to make such things

Did I read somewhere, possibly you Dave, that the locking device for the blade can be removed without any drastic side effects?

TBH mate I think the blades are lethal enough with the lock.  I sure as hell wouldn't be removing mine (but I loathe that tool anyway so my opinion may not count  :D).
I'm back!!

;)

Get the Artifact now (lose the blade) and then the Shard in the future when they land / funds permit :tu:
I'm not taking any more mod orders at present, sorry.

While I would hate to contribute to the rumor mill, I have to say that there might be a possibility of something interesting happening probably in the near future that could have something to do with something similar to the Shard....  :D

I took my artifact to the grinder and removed the whole blade mechanism and threw it away. I feel much safer now.

Well the Artifact would give you more leverage, so would make the better prying tool, just at the expense of pocket-ability :)
Give in, buy several Farmer's!!!!!!

Both.

I have an Artifact and I like it. Yes, the blade is very sharp and it takes a little practice to open it one-handed. I don't see how it could open by itself in your pocket. I like having a blade that is disposable for messy or edge damaging work. The blades are very easy to find in hobby shops and the like.

The Shard looks handy too and I'm sure I'll get one when they are available. I wonder if the cap-lifter-hook on the Shard will hold a 1/4" hex bit like the Artifact does?

Does anyone else find it a bit disturbing that that pic looks an awful lot like me?  If that was a Multitool.org t-shirt it would be scary!
