Benchmade had it so right, so why do they still get it wrong?

Ben, you feel the way I do about my BM 940 Osborn. It is by far the nicest and slickest tactical I own, it's good for both work and dress up and it handles all of the criteria you mentioned. I think Benchmade gets alot right in their knives, sure they have some that not everyone would like, I had a BM Mini Rukus that looked cool but the executing was lacking.

However I dig the used look it gives!

I agree with the OP , the Old Skool stuff , Bali's included were classy . F/F were great .lines were clean . Bout the only recent ones I like were the 520 (plain edge) , and the new Morpho Bali.

I know the product line , I used to own about 60 of them . Current headcount is two .

Another oldie but goldie was the 975 , ( the large Benchmade/Emerson CQC7 ) . I had a 970 for years , and a rendition with a Ti blade with a carbide edge . ( quite rare ) . Sadly the concept was flawed , as it was a cast iron pig to sharpen . It was never truly sharp or truly dull .

I just caught this thread:)... I used to live 1 mile from benchmade. I one had a proto of this model with the titanium liners rainbow anodized and jeweled. It was a nice folder. BM was fond of dating their releases and even marking the blades with the show it was intro'd at. Lots of SHOT show ones. Anyway, they were masters at marketing their prototypes, pre production, first prod runs, and on and on. I had many many of all of them when i was nuts on BM. They really were all just limited edition. One auto comes to mind though that i trully loved. It was a true designers prototype, unmarked. The aluminum handles werent even blasted or coated black. It was a mock up of the safety lock they were going to add so they were not worried about looks. Yep, sold that one too :( nice thread

The Old Skool Autos were Kool . I liked the AFO , and the Mini Reflex . I always wanted an Auto Spike , and the CQC 7 auto .

Then I went on a Microtech kick . Loved the early Halo's - all gone now .

I believe it's called "rise of the mall ninja".

People want big, chunky "tacticool" looking folders that they can impress their friends with that'll probably never be used for anything more difficult than opening the odd cardboard box.  Black coatings, funky looking blades, gigantic, hand filling over-sculpted handles with sandpaper traction that eats your pockets, and a blade as long as humanly possible to carry.  It looks cool.  Is it functional?  Eh, who cares.

Plus there's this weird, weird idea gaining momentum of carry enough crap to cover every possible emergency no matter how miniscule of a chance it'll happen rather than carry what's functional for daily use.

I can't believe I haven't posted in this thread.  The Sentinel is my all time favorite Benchmade.  There were a few nice ones after that, all based on the same design (Darkstar comes to mind) but to me the Sentinel was a classic.  I've always wanted one but never got around to getting it.  I did buy one which I think is dutifully protecting a drawer in Spain these days as it was a gift to Whoey- I'd planned on buying myself one eventually, but in those days BM discontinued knives every other day, and by the time I'd gone back for one of my own they were all gone.

It's sad that they are all gone now, and that Allen has moved on from that style.  I'm not a huge fan of the stuff he's producing with CRKT these days.
