Help me choose...
on: February 12, 2011, 12:19:34 PM
I want a new SAK to replace my Spyderco EDCs on a trip to Paris/France. I do not know if there are any restrictions on knives in France, but just in case I think a slipjoint SAK is just fine everywhere.

For I will carry a Leatherman Juice SC2 in my camerabag, the SAk can be very basic, but I still want:

large blade
small blade
can-opener
bottle-opener

which leads me to the Spartan. Or a Tinker.

but thinking of it, I still like the idea of having extra scissors, so maybe it is worth the extra weight and I should get a Climber? Or maybe a Supertinker?

And are the translucent scales scratch-resistant, or will the be ugly after some weeks of carry?

So guys, I know you all know the dilemma: What SAK to choose?

(and btw: there was a small tool with an orange peeler - is it discontinued, I can not find it anywhere?)

In France the all knives are consider as a weapon if you use them to kill, injure or threaten someone.
So If your SAK stay in your pocket or your wallet it is not consider as a threat so it is not consider as a weapon, so you can have it. Be-careful the SAK with a lockable blade is very often consider as a threat so try to avoid this kind.

Don't take with you your SAK if you go to the airport, to a stadium or in a museum (Like the Louvre in Paris) because it will be confiscated.

In some area around Paris you should avoid taking your knives, if you go around what we call "Banlieue" (suburbs written in French) the young will sea that a provocation and they will fight with you. But normally tourist don't go to this kind of area.

If you have time in Paris drop to the Victorinox store :

Victorinox Brand Store
2 Boulevard Raspail
75007 Paris
Phone: +33 1 45 44 52 64

It's next to the subway station "Rue du bac" on line 12.

Anyway, don't worries I never had problem when I was living in Paris with my Vic explorer that I was caring all the time in my jacket pockets.
:salute: Enjoy your trip... Especially to the Tour Eiffel :

The Recruit has what your looking for. It's compact and ''non threatening'' enough to use in public. Also inexpensive. You can get one for around $10.00.

Welcome LightFR!

Good info in this post for me (may be traveling to Geneva this summer--I suspect a few days in Paris would follow).

Translucent scales are easily polishable, though I don't mind a bit of character marks. :D  As for SAKs, well, you have the Recruit, Tourist, or Tinker Small, all of which fit the bill in 84mm size.  In 91mm size, you have a Tinker, Spartan, Super Tinker, Climber, et al.

You're thinking about the Executive, or Director - if you want stainless steel scales and a discontinued SAK.  Beautiful knife, though.

The Wenger Traveler should have your needs covered in a non-threatening, pocket friendly 85mm length.

I suspect folks might be getting board of my championing the DofE,but has big(butter)blade, very non threatening, scissers,a multi use opener, and has a philips, and a nail file.only thing missing would be your small blade.I fitted my DofE with sapphire scales.

There is no beginning,or ending, and for this we are thankful, cos now is hard enough to understand!

My vote would be for a Vic Tourist or Tinker Small, I prefer the smaller size when it comes to a 2 layer SAK.  A good old Vic Climber is a bit of a SAK 'must have' though IMO.

I am a big fan of the Sportsman but the traveler is small and has scissors.
I think Alcohol, Tabacco and Firearms should be a convenience store, not a government agency.

Woz, if you're willing to compromise on the small blade and take a nail file instead then you get a lot more options from Wenger.  Evo 10 or 11 for smaller non-scissor option or the Evo 14 or 16 if you wan the scissors.

i think dropping the 2nd blade for a nail file or flat phillips on the wenger is the way to go. You can still have a locking blade. Given the mechanism the chances of people picking up on the fact it locks is zilch. (none of my family have worked it out when i lend them my wenger)

The wenger adindo has everything you asked for and has a locking mainblade

If you are thinking about the 84mm Climber then the Wenger Teton is probably easier to find

In a victorinox i'd say go for a Vic Compact, its most punch for size.

but really.... how many cans are you wanting to open on this trip anyway, doesn't the juice have a cain opener?

I think I wait, and visit the huge brand store in Paris. It seems to be near the Louvre, so I can be there early next week. Hmmm, a huge SAK paradise...

Yes you are right the Louvre is just 5 streets away from the Vic store (about 10 min by feet).
Have a nice week-end in Paris.

Bump! :D

Did you visit the brand store? Is it worth visiting? I am in Paris right now and I would like to visit it, but it's closed on Mondays and I have little time this Tuesday...

The climber does everything you need and is barely noticeably thicker or heavier than a spartan. Get a climber.  :pok:
