Cool!  People like alox mods for sure.  :D

Here are the 2 prototype scale sets going tomorrow for anodize.  91mm ribbed and 111mm smooth with T&T.  It took way too much effort to do any more of these by hand, so I really hope these turn out.  :D

Looking good, but personally I would like to see those 91's in red rather than black. But that's just me...

Your definition of "made by hand" and mine differ in this case.
My 91mm Alox scales that I built an explorer between were made by hand tools.
Well okay, I did rough them out on a bandsaw but the grooving and final profiling was all done with files. Final polish on a cloth mop in my bench grinder.

I would love a little mill like yours but first I need a shed to put it in. No garage at my place.  :(

oh, and a lathe, and a decent belt sander, and a MIG would be handy, I'm sure I need a table saw, and, and

Now that I'm working again I might start looking at prices and build me a workshop.

When we were house shopping about 6 yrs ago, my number one feature on the list was a garage so I could have a place to work on stuff.  I didnt know it would be SAKs but something.

I milled the slots and grooves but the rest of teh scales are done by hand.  I roughed them out with a hacksaw, then profiled with a belt grinder.  After a drill press, the belt grinder is the most used and needed tool for me.

Well my goal is to CNC these, it sure isnt cost effective to do them by hand.  I think I have 10 hrs into that set by hand.  If I can crank off 10 sets in a reasonable time I can then not have to charge crazy prices for them.  Im hoping by Feb that I can start producing them. :D  We'll see how long it takes me to convert my manual mode mill though.

Then I can make alox scales for any knife really.   And of course I can experiment with different patterns or ever get fancy and allow the option to personalize with the users name etc.

Keep this up and the Swiss Army is going to be contracting with you for their knives, Syph. Syphinox, it's the way of the future.

Oh good, I'm in hopes I can save up some cash for one by that time.  I really like the idea/possibility of personalizing it, that would be very cool :tu:

What's the advantage of a belt grinder over a bench disk grinder?

What's the advantage of a belt grinder over a bench disk grinder?

Heat control, speed, and a perfectly flat / perpendicular surface.  Also I can use any grit belt I want, including scotchbrite ones, or blade sharpening ones.   They arent in the same class for metal removal at all really.

See this video at about 1:25  Thats exactly how I cut my 111mm and 91mm alox scales.

Wow, that's impressive.

I know with a bench grinder you can be there for ages.

Edit: a bit like with me and YouTube. First 2.5 minutes worked quite happily at 720P, now I can't get 360P to work properly without stopping

This sander is ridiculously fast. Looks like he is be grinding soft wood or something the like. I know how long my belt sander takes to remove only a mm or two from a thin Vic tool when reprofiling for use in another tool - and I do have a Semi-Pro Bosch one and use quality belts.
Another tool that would be nice to have but will never end up in my shop, I guess.
