Nicely executed.  Now if your goal is to keep adding layers and making the tool wider, but also useful. I recommend a way to hold a couple of bits next.  Since you have that driver part on the scale. :D

Yah, that was the new thing, stainless shell with some plastic inserts for bits. Another idea is to have the bit extender detachable.

Hrmmmm.

I put the hex driver scales on the Original Splash but then I had this extra set.

Sooo I made another Squirt with stainless scales.

Think of it as a splash minus the SE and warney/wire stripper blade.

Now I am thinking of putting a pocket clip on it...

I think from now on, I'll put a SAK next to this project so there is a sense of scale.

I actually used the Splash a lot last weekend. Cutting duct tape, pulling staples, turning over exposed brad nails and cutting string.

The Skinth is helping!

That looks great Eric!  I didn't really realize just how small it was until you put it up against the SAK.  You really managed to stuff a lot of functionality into a pretty small package!!  :tu:

Here we are folks, the much anticipated HEX DRIVER SCALES!

I threw this together really quickly since I've already had a 14 hour day but I really wanted to get this off the ground to see if my crazy idea would actually work.

Lets talk with pictures..

Here we're are, after boring out the pivot holes to 1/8, boring out the screw head recesses and polishing the pivots (just a tad too big for the parts), the new squirt is born. The 1/2" long pivots allow for three layers to be made with out and splicing.

(Image removed from quote.)

Now the business end the hex hole.

(Image removed from quote.)

The concept is to have the pressure of the Plier backsprings for bit retention and your hand grip to really hold it in while torquing

(Image removed from quote.)

Seems to fit...

(Image removed from quote.)

And a side look..

(Image removed from quote.)

Don't believe me? Check this out!

(Image removed from quote.)

Like I mentioned before, your hand pressure will allow for the bit to be held in nice and tight.

(Image removed from quote.)

Where this really shines is when I can use a short bit extender, I need to find myself a ratcheting bit extender.

(Image removed from quote.)

(Image removed from quote.)

There isn't a a really good way to finish the scales, unlike the flat surfaces of the regular scales. A side by side comparison shows the rough (but smooth to touch) scales and the sanded and polished scales I did a couple of days ago.

(Image removed from quote.)

(Image removed from quote.)

(Image removed from quote.)

(Image removed from quote.)

I'll take some more time soon and make a Splash MKII and add those scales. I'll likely revisit the scale 3D model, make the screw recesses larger and the pivot hole larger too for less finishing and more drop in.

I am in awe of this mod. Of all your amazing projects, the Splash is my favorite. I was not sure how the hex bit scales would fare given that bits are so short, but with an extender, especially a ratcheting one, truely astounding. Bravo, Sir.

If Leatherman, Gerber, SOG, Victorinox, or Multitasker don't head hunt you, you need to go into business creating MTs. You already have the best sheaths available (I finally have more money so I expect to be ordering a Skinth soon)

I whipped up a Skinth for it today. I used the same pattern for the Keyport Skinth I haven released yet and it came together quite nicely.

Room for a toothpick, signature pen and a pico pry bar.

I padded the bottom with a nitrile glove, because you never know when you need that extra bit of protection.

I have some of those laser pointer/led light combo keychains coming in the mail, it should fit in there just perfectly.

hrmm...the scale file has been edited and the quote for sterling silver is $103, and stainless steel ones at $35 or so.

It's still less than the Leatherman Argentum Limited Squirt Series ($240 if you can find one).

http://toolguyd.com/leatherman-argentum-ornate-multitools/

Here are the new scales: http://www.shapeways.com/model/945279/squirt-scales-v5-scissor-uni.html?li=my-models&key=cff8256d9b79a4118fca9e0c31e66c04

What I wanted to achieve with the recessed areas is a nice definition between the textured finish of the 3D printing and the smooth sanded areas, it'll look more like a Charge TTi. It won't be anything functional, now that I've proven that it'll work. It's all about style now.

The sanded areas can get scratched pretty easily so the rough areas and minium polished 'frame' will be a nice addition.

I think I'll get a set of stainless and see if they fit better. I am getting closer and closer to the perfect Squirt and even closer to having the scales available to anyone who wants them.

Well, that's a shame.

iMaterialize got back to me with a quote on 3d printed Ti scales...350 EUROS, not $'s people, EUROS!

That's $450 CANADIAN, even I am not THAT crazy. I could buy a life time supply of Squirts for mods with that kind of money.

The new Stainless scales will look so boss that I may forget about this idea all together.

--

Another idea is to get some plastic scales done and put a liner in...liner lock anyone? Sheet material would have to be waterjet or laser cut. Just when you thought it's the most I could do with a Squirt. This has me thinking!

I could hand cut and finish some Ti scales for alot less than that. :D  What thickness to you make them from.  I just hand cut some cadet scales from 1/16 inch (0.064") Ti.

The scales have integral bosses and other scallops on it. It's not the thicknes, it's the volume. Even so, the VOLUME is only 3.6 cubic CM's.

I'll stick with stainless for now...and hope one day they get beyond the bronze infusion process.

 :tu: Lovely.

I always think this tool is bigger than it is until the bit and bit holder puts it into scale.
My mind wants me to believe it´s about the size of a 84/91 mm, don´t know how, maybe because it´s so feature-packed.

If the new scales fit, I'll make sure that anyone can have their own Splash. I adjusted the pivot screw head boss but the pivot hole itself will always need refinement. Anyone with a little dremel experience will do it :)

The 3D printing madness continues!

I spent a little bit of time yesterday drafting up the scissor spacer layer and tweezer layer of the PS4 and S4. This way, anyone can just buy the parts to build their own Splash-ette.

Check it out! I added the straight pin slot into the design of the tweezer layer, it didn't cost anything, in fact costs LESS due to the material volume being lower (however minute).

The Scissor Spacer is as issued, but unlike the ones that come with the ES4 and PS4, this one will be made from Ultra Detail frosted clear plastic instead of the black. This will be sandwiched in between the frame and the scale so strength isn't that important. The reason why I designed these to bolt in is because you will no longer need to buy a brande new PS4/ES4 just to harvest the scissors, you can easily buy a MUCH less expensive Style keychain and torx screw it open to have the scissors.

The Style scissors, however, do not come with a spacer, hence the 3D printable one!

I ordered 3 of each and a set of Ultra Detail scales just for fun, throwing them into ONE file reduces greatly reduces the cost. I'll know in about a week if these work!

Made a little tool to help me align the pivots and tools when assembling and disassembling squirts. I machined  A tapered aluminum handle and fitted a broken dremel bit in the top.

The tip has been tapered a tiny bit to aid in slipping into the semi aligned holes.

It

it is also stepped to receive a pivot on the end.

Why? It's pretty simple.

Semi align the pivots, push the tool through the hole, perfect alignment.

Then stick a pivot pin on the end.

And push back through! No fuss.

It works REALLY well. I may even have to make one for my larger tool mods. I would have to make a bigger 7/32 one and a 3/16 one with a flat on one of sides to match up with the washers. That's how the assembly line does it in the factory.
