A meteoroid broke up in the atmosphere over the Russian city of Chelyabinsk on Friday morning, injuring nearly a thousand people as it lit up the sky and sprinkled fragments over the city.

My wife showed me that this morning, and I sort of thought it was a spoof.

Guess not...

Scary stuff.  Luckily it doesn't sound like anyone was killed.

Saw this, this morning when I was barely awake. I thought I was dreaming.  :) Kinda crazy. The next story on the news was that an asteroid will be passing earth in the next few hours.  :ahhh I'm not kidding either.

I want it.... a bit of it I mean. But that's not the issue... scary stuff :ahhh

I thought it was quite a coincidence that it's the same day we have that big old asteroid doing a flyby

They say the one that hit Russia was the size of a dinner table. The one doing the flyby is 15x that size. I doubt it would stay that size once it came through the atmosphere, but definitely would be a bad situation.

I thought things like this only happened above New York, Los Angeles or Chicago.

At least that's what Hollywood always shows!

On a serious note, I'm amazed and glad no one was hurt.

At 10.5 is when the sonic blast went off. Imagine that on a larger scale! In another video this morning saw one old brick building that collapsed in the center from the blast. Crazy stuff. Hope someone recovers the meteor from the lake.

Was also thinking of the gas cloud on reentry. Not so much the impact, but the gas cloud generated from the intense heat, the possible water contamination, still could be some threats there. Thankfully the meteor didn't do any other physical damage. The was bugger was white hot there. Almost sounded like two sonic booms in a few videos.

A bit of a coincidence (maybe), but I actually saw a meteor breaking through the atmosphere into a fireball a few hours ago. I had just walked out the back door and looked up to see it. Perfect timing.  :tu:
